  1. Hi All- I am a Model Master Enamels user and I had some questions and was looking for your usage tips on masking. After I spray a coat of enamels, I usually wait a few days (usually due to work, house projects, keeping the Mrs. happy) before I mask to paint the next color. However, this weekend I may have some more time. If I spray a coat of MM enamel light ghost gray on Saturday and let it dry over night, should I be able to use Tamiya Tape, 3M Blue Delicate surfaces tape and Yellow/White tack on the airframe the next day and spray the dark ghost gray? I have never had any problems with
  2. I’ve had great luck with the 155 Anthem. I switched up from a broken Aztek and it’s been great. A nice double action brush and cleaning is very simple. I use the siphon bottles for big work like clear coats and primer. I use the color cup for detail work and preshading as I can turn the pressure down a bit. I had considered the 360 for the ability to switch to a gravity feed, but it was real expensive. I can do almost all the detail work with the color cup on the 155, so it’s fine. I just wanted to plug the Anthem. I’ve also been able to get a replacement needle and nozzle from Micha
  3. Hahha. That's great. Thanks again for the tips. I think another problem is I try to feather out the putty with Nail Polish Remover too soon. It sounds like I should apply the putty and wait about an hour, and then go back. I apply the putty and use the Q-Tip technique right away. It seems to remove the putty. I also tried sanding the Tamiya putty after i put it on (no Q-Tip Technique here) and let it cure fully overnight. It did sand nicely Paul. Thanks, Dave
  4. Wow, thanks for the info guys. Paul, thanks for the detailed description. I think I might be under applying the putty for fear that it won't sand well or work right. Thanks again everyone
  5. I have to agree with Pete about the Floquil paint. It’s great stuff. My uncle builds trains and got me started with that paint. It airbrushes great, just have to add a bit of thinner and it’s one of the best brush paint enamels that I have used. Just straight out of the bottle. I use mostly Grimy Black, Weathered Black, Reefer White and their gray primer. Also have used Concrete for tips of AIM 9’s. Great stuff. Okay, enough of my 2 cents. ;) Dave
  6. Hi All- I just got a tube of Tamiya Basic Putty and was looking for some tips and suggestions on applying it (mixed with Nail Polish remover, or lacquer thinner?) and sanding/feathering it. Basically anything. I normally use a big tube of red “Bondo†and that is applied and feathered nicely, but wanted to try this Tamiya putty. It seems nice, with little bits of metal and such and sanding seems ok, but everyone seems to love it and something just doesn’t seem ‘right’ when I’m using it. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Dave
  7. Justin, I have a C-H Quietair compressor as well. It’s the guy with the 2 gallon tank. I have had it for about 2 years and the other day I was using it and it had the “chugging†noise. The tank filled to 100psi, and then when it dropped below 75 psi, it would not turn back on. I was confused, and checked the plug/circuit breaker etc. I drained the tank of all the air, and it started back up. I figured it must be the pressure switch. Later, the compressor would not turn back on at all. Now, I took off the cowling/cover. I took the motor apart and saw no problems. I noticed the pressur
  8. I used Tamiya Smoke, with thinner and a little NATO Black. Worked great, and toned down the brown a bit. Thanks for so many suggestions.
  9. Sounds like the Smoke/Dirty brown-black mixture is pretty common. Maybe I can add a little grey to tone down the Smoke. I was going to use Paynes Gray for the fuselage/external wash, but wanted something a bit different for the gear bays. It's a CAG bird, so not too dirty, but enough to "pop" the details.
  10. Hi All, I just wanted to see what color(s) everybody used for gloss white gear bay washes on modern aircraft? I usually use thinned Tamiya smoke that produces a dirty brownish color. What does everyone else use? Maybe a Payne’s gray or burnt umber. Just looking for other ideas, as sometimes the Smoke looks a little too dirty and brown. Thanks! :D
  11. Hey, thanks guys! Those are some neat tips. I would have never thought of using photographs for the engine fans and trunks. What a great idea Creighton, I love the term “poor mans seamless suckersâ€. That’s great. I might try the tubing idea or will probably just use the pictures. I was a little disappointed when I saw the intakes just ended and you can see into the inside where the gear bay wells are molded in. Speaking of intakes, for the Hasegawa pieces, where do you start painting the white? I wasn’t sure if the entire Hasegawa “intake piece†should be light ghost gray, and afte
  12. Anybody have some ideas or suggestions?
  13. Hi Everyone, I am building a Hasegawa F/A-18C kit and was about to start working on the intakes. I don’t want to use FOD covers, as I personally just don’t like the look of them. I noticed Hasegawa provides the intake and some of the trunk (looks like only the part that is Light Ghost Gray). I was wondering how other people go about extending the intake trunks (the gloss white part) without using seamless suckers. I searched on the forums and some people said flexible tubing. Also, I was thinking of scratching the fan faces, so I was just looking for ideas/materials to nicely extend the
  14. Great looking Hornet! What decal set did you use for VFA-105?
  15. Thanks for all of the input guys. I can just use the other two color insignias that were designated for the other aircraft on the top and bottom wings, instead of the two gray. Mr. Roof, if you can post pics of the speedbreak, or at least tell us what the text says, that would be great. I have some blank decal paper that I could probably make the markings if they are not too complicated. That would be great! :D (sorry, just had to use this guy). Thanks for all of your help, Dave
  16. I have a quick question on the colors for the stars and bars on the VFA-105 CAG bird (F/A-18C Modex 400). I have the Superscale sheet for the 400 bird and the instructions say the stars and bars below the canopy on the sides of the jet are in full color: Red White and Blue. While the insignias on the wings (upper and lower) are in the low-viz gray. The only problem is some sheets I have seen show full color for all four, and some show color on the sides and gray on the uppers and lowers. The other problem is I can’t find any reference pics of this jet from the top (only sides)! I was just w
  17. Hi All Detailers- I have noticed many people use Tamiya tape to make small details in the cockpit such as placards and seat belts. These look great. My question is, do you glue the tape or just use the natural "stickiness" and paint to keep the tape on? Would it ever peel off?
  18. Hi All- This is the same topic I accidentally posted in Tools and Tips. So I figured I would repost it here, since it’s more relevant in this forum. Sorry about the double posts. :) I have a question regarding USN F/A-18 Hornets when they are carrying laser versions of the AGM-65 Maverick. I assume when these are loaded, the Hornet also carries the LST pod and the FLIR pods. In all the photos of Hornets I have that are carrying Mavericks (I also assume they are the laser version, only one photo has 'Laser' written on the Maverick), you cannot see if the LST/Strike Camera pod is on the sta
  19. Hi All- I have a question regarding USN F/A-18 Hornets when they are carrying laser versions of the AGM-65 Maverick. I assume when these are loaded, the Hornet also carries the LST pod and the FLIR pods. In all the photos of Hornets I have that are carrying Mavericks (I also assume they are the laser version, only one photo has 'Laser' written on the Maverick), you cannot see if the LST/Strike Camera pod is on the starboard side. Generally, would the Maverick use the planes laser, or some ground designation? I am working on my Hornet and want the load out to be one like I saw in a photo: Mav
  20. Great, thanks for the info! Does anybody have any painting suggestions for the "silver" section between the cans and the grey of the fuselage? Thanks again!
  21. Hi Everyone, Does anyone have any suggestions (color and brand) for painting the burner cans on a F/A-18? I was thinking an Exhaust or burnt iron color Model Master Metalizer? I generally can only stay in the Tamiya-Model Master lines as that’s what I can get ay my LHS. Although the cans look sort of “goldish†in pictures. Also, does any one have a suggestion for the metal rings on the fuselage right next to the burner cans? Hasegawa only suggests “silverâ€. Thanks in advance for any help. Dave
  22. Thanks for the info everyone. I have the Weapon Set A so I was thinking of putting of dumb practice bombs on the Hornet. I guess I was just hoping for some winders for the wings. Wow, that’s really bad for the price they don’t include anything like that. I was thinking the Weapon Set C would be beneficial for other projectors, I guess I was just trying to put off buying that set for later. Thanks!
  23. Hi All, Does the Hasegawa F/A-18C kit (HA07026) come with any sidewinder missiles? I know it doesn't have much for weapons. I was just wondering if I had to buy the Weapons C kit just to get two Sidewinder missiles for the outer wing pylons. I know their A-7 kit didn’t come with weapons, but there were two Sidewinders on the fuel tank sprues. Any insight would be great. Thanks for your help!
  24. That's It!! Thanks so much
  25. Hi All- A while ago I stumbled on a website that had broken down most Hasegawa model kits and listed what sprues were available for each kit. I thought it had information on the A-7, F-14 and other kits. I remember it saying Sprues A, B 2xC, etc. I can’t seem to find the site and searched through these forums. Does anyone know the website or what I am talking about? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
