    P-51B

Jeff, you might want to check these pages http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2004..._colours_us.htm and following. IPMS/Stockholm is a treasure cove ! HTH Rob
  2. Jeff, might have been one of those asking that question before. Tried emailing them twice since asking the question, without any reaction. You might be interested to know that some of the same work (e.g. Papegai Staffel) has been covered by EagleCals. If you are interested I have the two sheets on the Papegai Staffel for sale. HTH Rob
  3. They did that so that crazy guys like me can fantasize about them, and eventually build one to their own liking ??? :( Well, that's what I will be doing with the Mustang. My P-51E will be one with longer span wings, a tail plug, enlarged rudder and a Griffon. Or I might call it a P-51N. If Luftwaffe '46 fans can have their way, why not do the same with a USAAF '46... apart from the fact that the USA still had an air force in 1946. They would have needed an answer to the Ta152H, didn't they ? PS: quite a number of designators were used for the P-39 before they arrived at the Q See http://
  4. Robert, I had info on all versions mentioned in that interesting link, except for the E,L & M. I always thought it strange they would have jumped from D to F, so was hoping for a very interesting variant hidden behind that designator. Sadly it isn't. Thanks to you all for the input Rob
  5. Thanks ! do you have any idea what it would have been like ? Rob
  6. Robert, thanks for building those models. It gives a very good idea how the plane would have looked like ! For all the books I have on the Mustang, I never saw any mention of a P-51E, so started speculating if it might have been a project that had eluded me. The idea of longer wings would have made sense to me as it would have made a very good high altitude reconnaissance plane, as did the Griffon, but of course I was just day-dreaming. I'll consider building one nonetheless. ;-) Thanks to you all Rob
  7. I just went through my Warbird Tech copy of the P-51 and rediscovered a picture of a mock up with a mid-mounted engine (Ã la P-63). I suppose this never went any further than that, but was wondering if more pictures exist ? It would have been fitted with a Griffon. It has always surprised me that this was not attempted on a regular P-51. If it worked for the Spitfire, why couldn't it be made to work on the P-51 ? Last question. Was there ever any attempt to fit the P-51 with longer span wings to improve high altitude performance ? TIA Rob
  8. Matt Bittner is currently doing a detailed review of the various brands of acrylics and how to handle them on Internet Modeler. The first installment was (I belive) in June 2007. http://www.internetmodeler.com/ HTH Rob
  9. Thanks guys. My question apparently stirred a healthy debate. About the Malaysian makings. The Italeri F-5E that I have on my shelf has them, so it's not merely a rumour. Cheers <_< Rob
  10. Do you mean this one ? http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...DME:B:SS:BENL:1 Thanks for all the replies Rob
  11. Gentlemen, I am familiar with Italeri and (unfortunately) Heller F-5E's in 1/72, but haven't tried the Airfix and Revell yet. Are these any good and are they by any chance re-releases of someone else's Tiger II ? TIA Rob
  12. Thanks Sergey, just what I was looking for ! Cheers Rob
  13. Thanks Marco, that's what I hoped. On some aircraft (the Morane Rallye comes to mind) the slats are always open, and even if you push them, they willopen up again. Still, if I vanquish my laziness, I might just scratchbuild them. Cheers guys Rob
  14. ... and still they used these, unmodified (except for some paint), in the Wilde Sau mission. Must have been fun coming in at night without a landing light. Not only for the pilot, but also for the others in the circuit. Cheers Rob
  15. David, Chris, many thanks. About the Zwiebel; according to the two-part Monograph from AJPress (which seems quite well researched) the Zwiebel could be translated. I should check in the remainder of my library to see what others have said. Scratchbuilding it will be then. I've been away from aircraft modelling for the better part of a decade, and kinda hoped "everything" would be available by know for this lazy individual. Thanks for pointing out the decals. So many new brands have appeared, that it's hard to catch up. Cheers Rob
  16. AFAIK I know the standard Fw190 didn't carry them, but I could have overlooked this all these years. The only version I have seen with a landing light in the port wing is the Fw190A-8 Nachtjäger (/R11). I don't think even the the A-6 Nachtjäger carried any, which seems odd. Anxious to learn more Rob
  17. Gentlemen, may I ask for assistance on the following ? 1) As far as my library shows, Me262 had automatically deploying slats (as the Bf109). This would mean that they were always down on the ground. Could I get away with leaving them closed ? I.e. was there a way to close them while parked ? If not, where can I find parts and pieces to upgrade my Revell 1/72 kit ? 2) What would be the most typical position of the exhaust Zwiebel (onion - cone) when parked ? 3) Does anyone know of high quality decal sheets in 1/72 that cover Czech, Soviet, American, French ot British Me262s ? Many thanks

    ICM kits

I just took out the decals form my ICM Emils, and indeed, they do not look extremely good on the sheet. They are printed in correct register, but they have somewhat jagged edges, and the small stenciling is a bit blurry. A word of caution: if they are the same type of decals as those in their armor kits they will react with enamel varnish. I have had this experience when varnishing them with Revell matt varnish. What happens is that they disolve. If you know this in advance, it is actually a good thing, as it turns the decals in a kind of paint that adheres perfectly to the surface, wit

    ICM kits

Dagger, I've got both Tamiya and ICM Bf109 Emils, and I must say they are "remarkably" similar, although the sprue lay-out is different. While I leave the claims that ICM 109s are copies of Tamiya's to others, I have yet to find the first minute difference between both when taken of the sprue. But at least, it says how good they actually are. Cheers Rob
  20. For what its worth (and hopefully I am not digressing too much :D ): I just discovered the oher day that the Revell canopy is a) not free of blemishes (I have 3 to compare) b ) the top glass panel is skewed to the port side (standard canopy). Really annoying. It is mentioned in the Extratech Express Mark by the way c) not the best of fits (the rear glazing panels fit badly and are incorrectly shaped) Apart from that it is extreme value for money, with nice detail. It sells at about 3 Euro's (3.75 USD) here in Belgium during the holiday season. I have been told the old Monogram is still t
  21. That's what I had been reading here and there on this forum, coming across some of Dana Bell's remarks regarding Mustang interiors etc etc. Was his (Dana's) work on the subject ever put together in some form (website, book,...) as I would like to learn more about the differences between directives (although it makes for some boring reading  ) and actual practice. Cheers & TIA Rob
  22. thanks guys, would never have thought to look at Schiffer. Did they release any other Monogram's ? (Luftwaffe painting guide ????) Cheers Rob
  23. Gentlemen, years ago, before I disappeared from the WW2 aircraft scene, I bought Monogram's Official painting guides on the USN and the first part of the USAAF/USAAC. Since then Monogram seems to have gone quiet. Was there ever a Part 2 of this series released ? The first part only goes up to 1939. TIA Rob
  24. Gentlemen, I think about replacing the canopies on my Revell 1/72 P-51B with vacform parts. I would need a regular and a Malcolm hood. Can you recommend me the best option ? TIA Rob
  25. Should have read the small print. I discovered them on a flyer that was included with my latest purchase. Never actually paid attention to the Warbird series before. Thanks guys ! Rob
