  1. @Rich: Both links do work. There hopefully shouldn't be any problems.

Anyway........here is my almost finished diorama. I say "almost" because I am still waiting for some extra decal sheets to arrive from Anigrand. But anyway, tell me what you think. Hints, tips, suggestions, etc. Anything I should change or move? Should I switch the positions of the aircraft around? And last, but not least: How should this display be presented in a contest? Would it go in the Aircraft Category, the Diorama Category, or somewhere else?

  2. Most stealth aircraft tend to have some markings (Unit, National Insignia, Tail code, etc., etc.) on them for identification, maintenance, or other purposes. But what about aircraft flying at Mach 3 or above, and 75,000 feet and above? Does it even make sense to put markings on hypersonic aircraft traveling that fast? At such high speeds, most markings might tend to "burn off". No sense in incurring higher maintenance costs to keep applying such markings, right?

Take for example the supposed Aurora hypersonic spyplane which may or may not exist and is supposed to fly at around Mach 6. Would any type of markings really be necessary for this craft? Ask yourself this: If you're on a secret high speed and high flying mission over enemy territory, you sure as hell don't want the enemy seeing any national insignia on your craft and deducing where it came from.

So I have to ask: Are markings really necessary on hypersonic aircraft models?

  3. On another site, I have two stealth aircraft dioramas in progress. I don't have the time to re-post everything here as I have to go to work soon, but here are the links:

    AURORA Top Secret aircraft

    http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,41251.0.html

Tell me what you think. If you read both threads carefully, I have various questions that I need answers and opinions to. Any help is appreciated.

  4. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landkreuzer_P._1000_Ratte

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landkreuzer_P._1500_Monster

Both the Ratte and the Monster were proposed, but never built by Germany in World War II. But now, 70+ years later, the Ratte has been built..........in a 1/144 scale model by Takom! Hooray!

    http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10308781

Armor modelers can now rejoice at finally having a scale model of this far out fantastic what if subject!

But what about the P1500 Monster? Will there ever be a kit of that? And if not, then how to scratchbuild one? What would it look like? I've already bought a Takom kit so I can build the Ratte. And I've bought one of the following too so I can eventually build a 1/144 scale P1500 Monster to go along with the 1/144 Ratte:

    http://www.amazon.com/Scale-WWII-German-Dora-Railway/dp/B000P92YWI

The P1500 was designed to use the same calibre of gun as that of the Dora railway gun.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav

    http://www.the-blueprints.com/blueprints-depot/trains/trains-0-9/80cmke-dora-railway-siege-gun.png

But the biggest hurdle is that of deciding what would the gun be housed on/transported on? A few sketches/concepts I've found are the following. If a real P1500 were to have been built (or even a model), then what type of transport chassis would it have?

    Sample A - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ef/P1500macedon.jpg

    http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww304/StugE100/Monster1.jpg

    Sample B - http://s2.blomedia.pl/gadzetomania.pl/images/2012/10/c10-312959.jpg

    Sample C - http://kampfgruppe144.blogspot.com/2012/06/1144-landkreuzer-p1500-monster-matuo.html

    https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/17/fa/b4/17fab4eea5d952ff19f43153150bad44.jpg

I'm not keen on Sample A. I could use B, but am not sure what type of model tank or other vehicle hull/chassis to use to mount the gun on. Sample C is nice as it shows the gun being supported/transported by two P1000 Rattes.

I want to build a 1/144 scale P1500 Monster by using the gun and other parts from a 1/144 German World War II "Dora" railway gun model kit. But in order to build the P1500, I'm not sure what type or scale of tank hull/chassis to modify and put the gun on, etc.

Samples B and C are the only two decent configurations. Which would be better to build/use?

  5. I'm sure a lot of you don't want to hear about this, but I figured it needed to be said. For any other modelers in the southeast Wisconsin area, listen up! I just found out at my local model club meeting today that Greenfield News & Hobby is closing sometime in March. :( This is truly sad because Greenfield is the best hobby shop in the Milwaukee area. Plus, now the model club I belong to has to find a new place for our meetings. :( If you want anything at the shop, get it now.

  6. Hope everyone was able to read the pic of the Menu sign clearly. If not, I'll paste the text below for you to read. ;)

While on a supposedly routine “milk run”, A freshly prepared PBJ B-25 with peanut butter and grape jelly, suddenly finds itself in an air-to-air condiment food fight with a new enemy fast food secret weapon, codenamed “JAWS”.

After the PBJ suffers vertical stabilizer damage during a taste test by the enemy craft, The enemy now comes in again for a “second helping” attack, launching it’s arsenal of advanced cutting edge kitchen utensils to disable the PBJ’s meager ration of defenses before making the final biting blow.

It is readily apparent that this is no ordinary “Happy Meal”, For the PBJ has bitten off more than it can chew on it’s designated mission.

  7. Glad you liked it. :) I really out did myself with that project. I even got a "Best Use of Creative Modeling" award for it at a contest a year ago. If you think the PBJ bomber lunch diorama is cool, then just wait till I make dessert for next year's Silly Week. ;) Hehehe! Ingrediants for that will be American and German. ;)

  8. I just sent in my Silly Week submission earlier tonight. I hope Steve gets it ok. This is my first time submitting anything. Though I was kinda let down when I got a reply saying it would be posted in 3-4 weeks.........very late after Silly Week is done. :(

But if it does get posted, I may have just surpassed Alvis in the craziness factor. Hehehe! ;) I won't say what the subject is. You'll just have to wait and see.

  9. I recently purchased an AMT Star Trek Deep Space Nine station model kit. This model kit is molded all in clear plastic. The scale on the box says that the station is 1/3300 scale. Is this correct? A lot of other sources I've read on the Net say the station model is 1/2500 scale, 1/2800, or thereabouts.

I also want to find starships that are the same scale as the station so I can have starships docked at all the arms of the station. But finding compatable scale starships is also becoming a problem. I need help with the scales. I don't know what is correct and what isn't.

  10. The above models are 1/35 though. The model you linked to was 1/72. Not sure if scale matters to you but 1/72 is a tight fit. 1/35 gives you more elbow room.

1/35 scale is what I definately want to build.

@Finn: I'll stick with a modern wheeled AFV, thank you.

Anybody have ideas for building/detailing the interior to look more like a camper? I don't think I've seen any 1/35 accessory sets of stoves, fridges, tables, chairs, etc., etc. to use.

  11. I want to buy a wheeled AFV (Armored Fighting Vehicle) model kit soon, but I'm not sure which one to get. I need one with a good amount of interior space. Either the:

    Boxer

    Stryker

    LAV-25

I realise there's numerous versions of anti-tank, ambulance, recon, NBC, anti-air, etc., etc., etc. for each one. All I want is just the "basic" unit so to speak. Is anybody familiar with the REAL vehicles and can tell me how much interior space the Boxer, Stryker, and the LAV-25 has? From what I have seen on the Net so far, I am temporarily leaning toward getting a Stryker model kit. But whatever I end up getting, I know I’ll have my hands full doing a lot of scratchbuilding.

    I want to convert/whiff this:

    http://www.modelcars.com/model-kit/academy-models-m1126-stryker-ground-vehicle.jpg

………into something fun and crazy like this. :)

  12. Hello. I hope to submit a model/article for Silly Week hopefully tomorrow, but I have a question first. How big should the photos be for submitting? 4 megapixels? 6 megapixels? 8 megapixels? More, or less? I looked through all the instructions and guidelines for submitting photos/articles, but didn't see anything about photo sizes.

  13. I tend to enjoy building subjects that nobody has ever seen, heard of, or done before. I've built a USS Montana battleship and HMS Habakkuk models are testaments to my philosophy. And now I find I want to keep doing something bigger and better. Each model subject I build must surpass the previous one. And the next biggest subject I can think of which has gotten my interest is the proposed, but never built, German Landkreuzer P.1000 Ratte super-heavy tank from World War II.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landkreuzer_P._1000_Ratte

    P__1000_Ratte_Tank_Cutaway_by_VonBrrr.jpg

Not much "hard facts" exist on the Net about the Ratte. What searching I've done so far indicates a variety of specifications as well as various designs, but nothing "final". Therefor, it's a huge speculative subject.

But here's the thing. I don't want to build this in 1/72 scale or 1/48 scale, or anything else smaller. I want BIG! I want to build this in 1/35 scale! In that scale, the finished model would be approx. 40 inches long x 16 inches wide x 13 inches tall. I want to build this to show and compare it to other 1/35 armor at a model contest. Everything about this model will most likely be scratchbuilt. Here's where I need help:

    1. I need lots of wheels and treads.

    2. The main turret will be similar to that of a battleship turret from the Scharnhorst class battleship, but with only two barrels instead of three. What I need to figure is the dimensions of the turret (minus barrels) in 1/35 scale.

    3. What German 1/35 kits and accessories can people recommend that I can get extra parts from?

  14. As you can see in the pic below, I have added wings and other aircraft parts to a set of joke shop chattering teeth. This unusual creation is for a humorous modeling subject/diorama I am currently building for a Spring contest. I couldn't use parts from a propeller type aircraft as I wasn't sure where to put a propeller on the damn teeth. So I bought a cheap German Me-262 aircraft kit and used some parts (Especially the jet engines) from that. I'll go with the story that the Japanese were secretly testing a new jet aircraft weapon partly based on designs of the German Me-262, which isn't too far off the truth, since the Nakajima Ki-201 Karyu was an actual Japanese prototype built in WWII that was based on the German Me-262. So........the story goes that a PBJ aircraft is on a routine run, when all of a sudden it comes under attack by the Japanese's newest secret weapon.

Also, you can see part of a canopy on top of the teeth. I'm not sure how to go about creating a scratchbuilt cockpit, so I'm just going to glue the canopy pieces on top of the teeth instead. I want to paint the canopy pieces on the insides to prevent people looking through them and not seeing any cockpit. What color should I use?

Also, what is a good green color for Japanese WWII aircraft? I've got TAMIYA XF-26 Deep Green. Will that be ok?

  15. Recently when I took my Project Habakkuk model:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/icy...10/DSC03658.jpg

........to a contest about 2-3 weeks ago, I was told by some people that the aircraft I had on deck were hard to see against the color of the decking itself. When I was deciding on a Measure scheme to paint the Habakkuk, I chose Measure 13 which was Haze Gray for vertical surfaces, and Deck Blue 20B for horizontal surfaces. The closest I could get to 20B was by spraying the deck with Testor Dark Sea Blue. I don't remember what color I painted my aircraft, but I know it was Tamiya paint. Here's a pic (See link further below) from a year ago showing painted and unpainted aircraft on the deck. If I have to redo a whole new bunch of aircraft, then I've got lots of extras to paint. But what color(s)? I only use Testor Acryl, Testor Model Master Marine, or Tamiya paints when building models. So what color from those brands would be best if I had to re-paint a bunch of new aircraft in a late '44 to early '46 North Atlantic area timeframe?

Secondly, What roundrels/insignia would be appropriate for US aircraft on a Habakkuk carrier in probably late '44 to early '46?

    http://cocardes.monde.online.fr/v2html/en/...etats_unis_his5

    Sample pic:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/icy...el/DSC02712.jpg

I was thinking of either of the following for re-painting new aircraft:

    FS 35164 Intermediate Blue or....

Testor US Navy Blue Gray M-485 or.....

    FS 35044 Insignia Blue

  16. Been too long since I posted to this site. But now I'm back and I need help. I've been posting to other forums about this subject and still I am left clueless as to what to do. I'm hoping that there might be some people who also build ship models here that can give me some advice. :D

Rather than repost everything about my project here, I'll leave some links to other threads on other forums that I posted to:

    http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewt...=13&t=43426

Now if you read some of the posts near the bottom of Page 1 of that thread, you can see my dilemma as to what color to paint that ship.

Another thread on another forum is here:

    http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,25293.0.html

Reply #7 in that thread which was made by me gives some suggestions as to what I "may" paint the ship.

But........I'm still undecided. :woot.gif: The main hull will get spray painted while the superstructure, guns, etc. will get brush painted. But when I find a good spray can color to use, there is practically no corresponding smaller bottle of color to use for brush painting, and vice versa. :)

  17. I recently won an old AMT/Ertl Space:1999 Alpha Moonbase diorama kit in a raffle at a local modeling contest. Has anyone ever built one of these before? Any Pros or Cons? Any tips, hints, suggestions for gluing, painting, etc.? I plan on turning mine into a fictional military moonbase and adding guns, extra fighters, and other stuff.

  18. My favorite Enterprise design has to be the Sovereign. Followed by: (In order) Enterprise-A, Enterprise-D, Enterprise-B, Enterprise-C. I don't want to talk about the NX-01 Enterprise. That ship is butt ugly. :worship:

As far as other favorite ships: (Not necessarily in order.)

    USS Prometheus

    USS Akira

    USS Defiant

    USS Nebula

    USS Excelsior

    As far as alien ships:

Species 8472 Bio-ship. Any ship that can be immune to assimilation from the Borg AND destroy a Borg Cube with a few hits has got to be tops in my book. :worship:
