  1. Thank you for the replies. I did some more digging and actually found a few grey and white A-1Es, but most were as I suspected, all grey, including the one flown on the MOH mission. The AFM fails again.

  2. The Air Force Museum repainted their Skyraider grey and white like a Navy version, but I have a feeling that the pre 1966 (camouflaged) Air Force Skyraiders which operated in Southeast Asia were all COIN grey (ADC grey) with no white underneath. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

  3. Thanks for taking the time to try to describe what is going on with the bay. I wish that a few more photos existed. I am trying to do the 1/72 Hasegawa kit, and I am starting a scratchbuilt bay to cast for a few other 111s, and a more accurate 111F bay would be neat.

  4. I must have watched the referenced video a dozen times. The whole center portion of the bay is what is referenced as the cradle I guess. When stowed, is it completely flat on the bottom? Do the side flipper doors remain open in flight as the pod is in use? In the single photo, what does the supporting structure look like inside? The bullet shaped pod must mount to this. It looks flat on the sides but does it rotate also? Very confusing!

  5. Thanks for the replies. I have an F-8 resin seat coming, and it looks like the metal shroud covering the parachute housing needs to be a little larger, and the pack is set back inside it a bit more. Will try to modify it to come up with something closer than using the later H7 seats that we are expected to settle for.

  6. What do you folks use for 1/72 early F-4C/D builds? Prior to 1968 or so, I believe the Martin Baker Mk5 seats were installed - the headrests/parachute housing looking quite different than the Mk7 everyone is used to modeling. Thanks.

     

  7. If you are modeling a deuce with the IR seeker head and are opening the weapons bay, the inner doors will have no rocket tubes, and have large cutouts for the larger fins of the AIM-26.

Every Fig.8 airplane (airplanes equipped with the Hughes IR sensor ball in front of the windscreen) was modified from an airplane brought up to Config. 7 standard - which primarily involved the GAR-11 Nuclear Falcon mod. A few Fig. 7 airplanes were lost to accidents, so may not have received the IR sensor mod. Photo evidence and microfilm aircraft records show which units were involved. The training unit deuces at Perrin AFB never received the Fig.7/8 mods, nor did a few ADC units which passed their airplanes on to the ANG. Same for the PACAF squadrons that transferred their Config. 6 airplanes to the ANG in 1964.

  9. This is a fairly old post, but I just came across it. It is quite incorrect that only 6 units received the Fig.7 GAR-11 nuclear falcon mod - my count is 20- 10 ADC squadrons plus the ADWC, plus the 6 squadrons in Europe, and two in PACAF and the one in Alaska. Total airframes by my count is about 464 As and 48 TF-102As.

  10. Just curious if you are going to show the weapons bay doors open? This area is where I have been spending most of my time, as it needs so much more detail work. The bay area piece provided is not even close to what it looked like. Please continue your fine work...I can only hope to have mine look half as good! I can probably answer most detail questions on the deuce for you folks.
