  1. Hi all...just a couple in progress shots of my nearly done I-16. Still to be added are the windscreen, opened entry hatch, gunsight, and main gear retraction cables...and some final weathering. Hope you like it so far! Happy modeling all! :D Joe Youngerman
  2. Thanks guys for the feedback...Craig, I look forward to seeing that build! Joe
  3. Very nicely done Geoffrey...good clean build...finish looks excellent! Joe Youngerman
  4. Glad to help Mr B!! :)
  5. Thanks for the kind words guys...glad you liked it. Mike...the canopy was masked with Tamiya tape, a new exacto blade and a bright light...and good reading glasses! I really still prefer Tamiya tape for masking over other methods I've tried. Takes a little while but it works for me. :) I am back into modeling full steam again so I should be here more going forward...good to be back!! Joe
  6. Hey Mr B....the patches are just dabs of blue paint...which is how they looked in the photos as well...easily done. Here is a pic of the belly...not sure if his a/c had the belly window painted over so that was a guess....the salmon color in the wheel wells is a point of contention for some...the evidence I found suggests it's correct for early -1A's. Happy modeling!
  7. Hi all...just a couple pics of my Ki-61 built OOB recently. This a/c was in service in New Guinea and the skin was very oxidized...I used a couple of shades of Floquil's old silver followed by a flat coat after decaling to try to replicate this look. Hope you enjoy it...it was a trouble free build for the most part. Joe Youngerman
  8. It was an early build F4U-1A...and it had the circumferential cowl flaps! Most corsairs had the top two cowl flap sections wired down to reduce oil splatter onto the windscreen. Tommy Blackburn's bird did not as can be seen in wartime photos of his aircraft while flying with VF-17. This is my 1/72 scale Tamiya F4U-1D that I backdated to 1A standards...complete with patches on the port side f the fuselage as mentioned earlier in this thread! The prop has been modified, cowl actuators/cable added, flap step removed, canopy backdated, interior details added, tires changed to smooth type tread,
  9. Hey all, I'll be there for my 3rd consecutive National Convention! I won't have as many entires this year as last but should have 6-8 aircraft ready by then. I'll probably drive there from Atlanta to make sure everything arrives intact. I'm registered and the room is reserved...should be another great event!!! Joe Youngerman
  10. Looks great, very nice paint work! Joe Youngerman
  11. Thanks guys for the nice feedback...Mike, I'd love to see you work your magic on this bird! I used Aeromaster Nakajima Navy Green topside and Aeromaster Mitsubishi Navy Underside Gray for the belly. I know the topside should be a fairly dark green but am really speculating on the belly color. Fine Molds recommends either Gray or Silver(Bare Metal), for the belly. As the early production a/c were painted an overall light gray and this a/c would have been operating in a fairly harsh environment...I guessed in favor of Gray on the belly. The photos I have seen of two tone schemes on this bird don
  12. Hi all, Just a few in progress pics I thought some might enjoy...its my build of Fine Mold's 1/72 scale "Lorna". Only about 150 of these anti-sub patrol a/c were built during the later half of WW2. They were underpowered, undergunned and rather ugly. Very little info seems to be available on this a/c and to date I have only found about a dozen B&W photos of it. They flew convoy escort duty from China, Formosa, and Japan. Hope you like it so far, Happy modeling all! Joe Youngerman
  13. Great work Mike...far more realistic than the Fine Molds decals that come with their Bf 109F kits. The build, like all your work, looks great of course! Joe
  14. Thanks very much for the kind worrds guys! Big'Ed, I primed the model with Pollyscale Black. I did not use a gloss though you should if you want a higher shine finish. Be sure to prime the model with acrylic and not enamel paint. Alclad can react badly to enamel. I rarely have any pull-up of paint with Alclad II which is why I love it. I did have one small area pull up but this probably occurred due to lack of prep before spraying the primer, (which pulled up as well), and was easily fixed. You don't have to use black to prime either...I have used dark gray on many occasions. I urge you to
  15. Thanks Stav...glad you enjoyed it! Joe
  16. Thanks Silver1...the finish took a little while to do but is not really that hard. I primed the model with Pollyscale black and then shot the entire kit with Alclad II "Aluminum". The slightly darker areas of the wing are Alclad II "Dark Aluminum" The control surfaces were then masked and sprayed with Floquil's "Old Silver" from their model RR color line. The skin around and aft of the exhausts was done with Testors Metalizer's "Magnesium". This was also used for the skin panel area around the turbosupercharger exhuast duct. The OD anti glare panel and red cowl ring were painted last. Ho
