Unfortunately, I could not bring my modelling to the US. I just got back to Sweden and I am finishing up the last bits and pieces on the MiG-21. I will post photos when it is done. Thanks for asking.

I should have mentioned the air brakes because they do require the most surgery of all the improvements. They did fall out as soon as hydraulic pressure dissipated. It is still a great kit!

Just to remind y'all about how much better the Eduard MiG-21 is compared to Academy's, check out the thread below. The mods I did with y'alls help does not make a perfect MiG-21MF but it brings it pretty close to Eduard's kit. The Eduard kit still has better details despite of all my work. So even if the Eduard kit is not perfect, it is eons better than what we had. All the discussion of Eduard imperfections does not make it a lesser kit but is really useful for those who wants improve the last details on it. In my opinion, the Eduard MiG-21 is truly great out of the box.

The parts mostly fit together very well. However, it is a short series kit made by Sword I believe and it does require extra work compared to a new Eduard, Hasegawa or Tamiya kit. Most parts suffer from a little flash but it is easily cleaned up. The scribing on Sword kits is in my opinion less delicate compared to Special Hobby short series kits and it does show on the Lansen too. However, the panel lines still looks the part under a coat of paint.
The kits seems to exhibit most prominent panel lines but there is room for improvement. Many of the vents are either missing or can use some work to improve realism. The jet intakes are very well engineered and looks good out of the box but because of the brilliant engineering, they are easily further detailed. The cockpit is fairly basic and can really use some PE. A PE set is coming from Maestro Models soon. The ejection seats are very nicely cast in resin. The canopy is a bit thicker than newer Eduard, Hasegawa and Tamiya bit it is very clear and looks right.
The instruction book is a gem and closely resembles Eduard's instructions books.
The decal sheet contains markings for two different aircraft from the F17 and F15 wings, both in 325 Olive Green (close to FS 34079 but slightly more yellow). The decal sheet contain a full set of stencilling and it is very well printed and rich in detail. However, the crown markings does not accurately capture the blue color, which should include more green.
All in all, a very nice first kit release from Tarangus. It does capture the beautiful lines of the Lansen very well and it will build into a fine replica straight out of the box. Because of its design, it also forms a very good basis for extra detailing without too much effort for those of us who elects to do so. Thumbs up Tarangus!!!

The Tarangus A32 Lansen in 1/48 has hit the shelves. I am posting a short review of my initial impressions of the kit right out of the box.
The kit comes in a sturdy box with beautiful box art. Sprues, decals and clear parts are well protected.
All parts are ejection moulded except the two ejection seats that come in resin. No photo etch is included.
I have not checked the accuracy of the kit in any depth yet but it seems the capture the beautiful lines of the Lansen very well. The pictures below depicts the different kit parts.

My version is the first that Neomega released. I was not aware that they updated the kit in between releases. Hopefully yours have been corrected. The problem is quite evident in my verison of the kit so you should be able to spot it easily if it is not corrected. Cheers Martinsson

Very nice job on the cockpit Dimitri. I don't know how far you want to take your build in terms of accuracy but the Neomega J29 has shape issues around the upper nose. I don't have access to my kit right now, but if I remember correctly, the windscreen is at the minimum too wide and there might be other shape problems as well. The problems are serious enough to through off the shape of the a/c to a disturbing degree. I am sorry that I cannot be more specific but I am sure you will find photos to compare with. It is a very nice kit otherwise.

Yes you are of course right. However, the turtledeck should be easy to cast and besides, it comes with some (most?) resin cockpit sets. It is also fairly easy to scratch build. The major concern would be the canopy. Perhaps Falcon's 1/48 scale Clear Wax Set No.52: USAF has to be the provider of said canopy. Considering the considerably lower cost of the Revell kit in comparison to the Hasegawa kit, these sets should not bring the total project cost to prohibitive levels. Cheers Martinsson

Great attention to detail and very nice craftmanship in details and conversion! Also a nice and clean paint job.
I wonder, perhaps TwoMikes can cast the Hasegawa F-15C front fuselage piece in resin and make it unnecessary to sacrifice a Hasegawa kit in order to convert the Revell F-15E to a C-model. It seems the fuselage insertion is easy to cast and fairly easy to install. And Cliff C, people can use your excellent in-progress work as an instruction.

Hello,
I am gathering information for a Special Hobby Lockheed Junior Electra L12 build. Jim Schubert did a review of the kit back in 2001 and he mentioned that Gulf Oil Company had one in metal, blue and orange. The Gulf Hawk springs to mind and I think I want to paint my L12 in those colors. The problem is that I cannot find any information on the Internet or in the books I have about this a/c. Mr Schubert suggests the following readings as references:
1. Lockheed Aircraft Since 1913: Rene J. Francillon, Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1987, ISBN: 0-87021-897-2
2. Wings or Airpower magazine: 1970s?* Article "Electra, The Twin Tailed Lockheeds" by C.M. Daniels
3. Model Art Magazine: 1970s? L-12 cutaway drawing
4. Flight magazine: Pre war L-12 cutaway drawing
Unfortunately, I don´t have access to any of these publications. I would really appreciate any further clues on this mystery!

Paolo, you did great! It looks like a new Hasegawa kit and not a conversion. Very well built, especially considering the metal color coat.
I will absolutely keep in touch. I´ve had my plate full for a while but I am slowly returning!
Your collection of F-104s and J35s is fantastic and inspirational. I am quite envious! :) Have you decided on what´s next?

Great work as usual! I think you have captured the raw and greyish metal look of Saab´s aircraft. It is maybe a bit bright just around the canopy. The crown markings are a bit too bright, I wish Eli would release a decal set consisting of Swedish Air Force insignias and numbers, because his decals have much more accurate color than Hasegawa or TwoBobs.
O´l 89 is a favourite! Impressive work!

Edd, you are producing some very good work there! I like to read about your attention to detail and all the knowledge you present in your comments and builds! I am learning very much about the LA Mirages. Knowledge that I know will come in handy after a couple of other projects... Thanks for posting!

Well the problem has been a lack of references. I have never seen a photo of blue Vietnamese MiG-21s before. I should have tried to find photographic evidence before I settled for this scheme. I took Albatros word for it this time... Lesson re-learnt! Won´t happen again! No more sloppy research! :)

Laurent, you may be right. The spine stretches too far back into the fin to be a MF. That is certainly the case with the -21 in the background, where the spine almost meets the brake chute fairing. It looks the same for 5210. :)
Is there a picture of 5212 in the book that confirms the Bis status? I´d rather see a photo before taking the books word for it. I guess I have re-learnt the lesson that photos are the only credible sources in the end.
And even if photos of 5212 proves it to be a Bis, I am not going to redo this kit, so it stays MF. Too bad but at least it looks like an MF!

Hello everybody and thanks for your help regarding the stencils. And thank you for sharing a photo of a blue Vietnamese MiG-21 Davide! I have never seen one before! Looks like no stencils.
I am sorry to be such a stranger to this forum lately. Most of it depends upon that fact that the entire family will move to the US next week. I got notified that I had been accepted to an academic programme in the US about six weeks ago. It affects the whole family who will join me. LOTS of things to take care, both at home and in the US!
Just a short update. I got the decals on. A swift operation since I do not need to deal with stencilling. I can report that the Gunze clear straight from the can works wonders. It is very gloss and sturdy.
The landing gears are almost sorted out!

In my opinion, the Jet Modeling forum is here to provide a space for discussions about jet modeling. It is a discussion forum which means that different opinions sometimes are vented. Why would it even exist if we couldn´t ask questions related to jet modeling (and of course other topics at different Forums)? To me, one of the greatest attractions with ARC is that this is one place where I can get in depth information about kits, after market sets and aircraft. This is a big part of my personal development as a modeler. In the In-Progress and Critique Corner, I learn much about different materials and techniques. Also a big part of my development as modeler. Sometimes I see good techniques or critique of a model/after market set that I do not bother with. I make those choices and I expect that everyone else visiting ARC is doing the same. After all, it is the ever ongoing exchange of thoughts that makes this Forum attractive.
The dynamics of these discussion forums is fantastic. I find it extremely valuable to get access to all this knowledge that never stops to amaze me. However, sometimes, for various reasons, I find threads that goes out of hand and develop into the more negative and is perhaps un-polite in tone. When that bothers me, I just stop reading and shift to another subject. And that is, in my opinion, very much the exception to the rule.
Finally, I hope that people who don´t want to learn all the details about a kit doesn´t get offended when others who want to know is in deep discussions. If you are happy to use the kits as they are, that is fine by me. It is a hobby and the main thing is that we have fun. Just stand by your decision and don´t get drawn into AMS and blame it on the forum.

From your lines of thought, there seem to be three possibilities and one deduction;
D) The paint is not Russian by origin but was applied in Vietnam (thx Jennings)
P1) The Vietnamese masked all stencils or replaced them with new Russian stencils
P2) The Vietnamese substituted Russian stencils for Vietnamese ones after the paint was applied
P3) The Russian stencils were over-painted and not replaced
Also from information provided by you, possibility no 2 is less likely. So possibilities number 1 and 3 are most probable. I have decided to go for possibility number 3 because of Kotey´s comment. I will soon be back with photos in my In-Progress thread.
Thank you very much for all help Gentlemen! It is much appreciated to be able to vent these thoughts with people prepared to help.

The Swedish AF crests should face forward on both sides. The photos I have seen of F15 Lansens, the crest faces forward on both sides. However, there may have been exceptions to the rule - not surprising. So you may very well be right.
