  1. It sure isn't a throw together kit. Here were my results with a great deal of extra work on the kit including aftermarket decals to supplement the airfix ones.
  2. Hi, Although I am reasonably experienced building models I have not tried my hand at lighting and am therefore a complete novice. I know my question is about a ship and not a space crfat but you guys seem to have more experience in lighting models - hence the posting here! (Hope it's ok) . I have the 350 scale Minicraft Titanic. What I would like to do is to have lighting showing through the portholes and windows in the hull and superstructure (which I am drilling out) and also possible some fiber optic lighting for specific navigation lights etc. I have searched a lot on the internet but
  3. I have finally completed that poor unloved red headed stepchild of a model - Airfix's Boeing 747. What went into the build: Airfix 747 Popsicle Sticks Filler, lots of filler.... After market corogard decals Aftermarket window decals Changes made to the model: - removed the tailplane from fuselage (the saw) - thinned it down (a lot) then reattached filling in the ample gaps either side with sheet plastic and filler - sanded down the trailing edges of wings etc - built up the area on the fuselage where the fuel tank/box is between the wings with filler - not sure if the profile is perf
  4. Jennings, Thanks for the input - any suggestions on sources to get something more dimensionally accurate (if it need built from scratch or the kit altered). Thanks, Stuart
  5. A couple of specific questions on the minicraft Air Force One 707. I was thinking of getting the following resin parts: 1) Two Mikes replacement nose 2) Contrail replacement engines I have seen a couple of positive reviews on the replacement nose but some re the engines which were not so complimentary. Can I have input from anyone that has tried these? Also any additional suggestions/things to consider on the minicraft Air Force One 707? Thanks! Stuart
  6. I did some internet searches but could not find anything. Does anyone make 1/200 scale air force one decals - I was looking for them to possibly adapt to Revels Boeing SST. Thanks, Stuart
  7. I am using draw decals 747 doors and windows set. I have not used decals like these before (i.e. no clear are round the decal). What is the best way of treating these - should I coat the decal sheet first and then cut round the decals - if so is future ok to coat the sheet with. I am somewhat expecting disaster in trying to place these window decals as they appear fragile and the rest of this 747 has been a PITA. Any suggestions welcome! Stuart
  8. I have been working on a 747 (BA Landor colors with a lot of reshaping/thinning etc etc - yes it's an airfix) for a while and have a question of the aftermarket corrogard and window/door decals. How far around the printed part of the decals should I trim before trying to use them. I ask because the window decals are clearly quite long and I am a little concerned about how they will respond to being moved into final position. Hope the question makes sense! Thanks, Stuart
  9. Before I place my order for xtracolor paints (for a 747 in BA Landor colors) I wanted some idea of whether or not one tin of the blue and one of the BA grey for the lower and upper fuselage will be enough, or should I go with a couple of tins of each? Will be sprayed over primed surface Never used this brand before so I wanted to make sure I had enough. Many thanks, Stuart
  10. Jennings - thanks for the answer - just what I was after. Gareth - I'm not sure I have fixed them all but what I did do was as follows: - removed the tailplane from fuselage - thinned it down (a lot) then reattached filling in the ample gaps either side with sheet plastic and filler - sanded down the trailing edges of wings etc - built up the area on the fuselage where the fuel tank/box is between the wings with filler - not sure if the profile is perfect but got a lot of pics from airliners.net which gave me a pretty good idea of the shape. Also added very prominent NACA ducts to the fro
  11. I have been working on Airfix's 747 with BA livery for sometime, trying to correct the more glaring shape problems. (I know this was probably lunacy). I have tried to find some references for wing colours, in particular if any parts of wings (or tail) is in natural metal. I have looked on airliners.net etc for photographs, but I was hoping someone might have an answer here. I am using decals for the corrogard (sp?) so I don't have to worry about that - just if the leading edge or any other part is natural metal. Thanks, Stuart
  12. All, Thanks again for the information. I have looked for the BA blue color in Xtracolors list and the only BA blue I see is X322 British Airway 'World Colours' Blue - I i this the one I am after? The aircraft I am building is the one in this picture: http://www.airliners.net/photo/British-Air...-136/0574937/M/ Thanks, and Happy New Year to all when it comes! Stuart
  13. All, Thank you for the information - I have another question on the colours for this aircraft - is the colour on the upper fuselage (above the blue) simply white, or is it a very pale shade of gray? Thanks!
  14. Jay and Eduardo, Thanks for the information and for the links - the pictures work fine - some just needed cut and paste into address bar. Those pictures give me a lot of assistance! Last question I have (for now :-)) is - are there any decal kits available for the windows? Thanks again, Stuart
  15. Gentlemen, I am in need of assistance. Santa (in the guise of my girlfriend) was kind enough to provide me with a new model. She got me the Airfix 747 in BA livery. From what I have read it is an aircraft blessed with a few shape issues. However as she traveled on that specific plan she is enthusiastic to see it completed, and not being one to discourage her purchasing models for me I want to do my best with it. To that end I have a few questions: 1. What are the most significant of the shape issues and is there a practical way around them? I was hoping to find maybe a build up of som
