  1. To be fair, as a fan of history, I cringed at the trailers and hadn't intended on going to see it. But, I got some special tickets for a free preview and said "why not give it a chance". I figured I was going to have to tell my kids a bunch of corrections, but I really didn't. And I was extremely happy that they highlighted USS Nautilus' (SS-167) role. It nicely rolled in Pearl Harbor, Doolittle Raid and Coral Sea as a lead up to Midway. The CGI didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Cheers, Dave
  2. While the Star Wars-esque flight sequences were a bit annoying in some ways, I was happily surprised by how faithful they were to critical points in the story. Overall, recommended. Cheers, Dave
  3. Nice pics of 676. I have a bunch of hours on her and I managed to fly on all four in my 2 year tour (thanks to a single flight on the fourth right before I transferred as she came out of maintenance). Nowhere near my number of hours underwater, but I loved my job with Nightwatch. Dave
  4. The medal on the nose was actually a bit of a joke in the squadron. That bird was a hangar queen mainly used for spare parts to keep everyone else flying during OIF/OEF on Lincoln's 10 month '02/'03 cruise that ended with the "Mission Accomplished" speech. The medal said something like "I gave so others could fight", but I'd have to do some searching to verify. Dave
  5. From the pictures, the NIGHTWATCH blockhouse is under water...
  6. Mike, Already ordered. It is in the mail to me already in Connecticut. So looking forward to it. Thank you for the great service assisting me the other day. Any chance you will be doing more in 1/350... I'd be in for a Churchill SSN 😀... Dave
  7. Argh! Went to order and Starling is out of stock. Flankerman, I have to live vicariously through you for a while... Dave
  8. Awesome. Have been waiting to see one. Need to get one on my shelf. Should kickstart my WWII submarine build, but I need to decide what Soviet boat to do. Dave
  9. A gallon of relative bearing grease...
  10. Chief, not trying to say that officers don't get paid enough compared to enlisted, but our costs certainly are higher which you undoubtedly saw when you put on your anchors. I know I get paid a ton more than my sailors, but that doesn't mean that having to drop $600 is not a painful hit especially for my JOs. Also, for all my Sailors who were out of boot camp with blue camo stuff, they didn't get anything that covered the cost of the green camo stuff for cold weather that they just had to buy as we changed homes to Connecticut. It saddens me, as I am sure it did you, that I have to tell my dep
  11. I'll disagree on the size of the allowance... Especially when you add in parka, fleece, etc that you need in some climates. And I always enjoy the argument that officers get paid enough so it doesn't matter... Dave
  12. The enlisted sailors still have the allowance, but it really doesn't pay for much. They do give them a one time payment for uniforms each time we pull this uniform swap, but it still isn't enough to cover the total change out. And for officers, nada. Dave
  13. I think most active duty guys in the Navy are sick of the constant changes for no reason functional reason, so I would assume Army is the same. I can't say that I was excited to drop $600 to look like I am a Jarhead. But, maybe it makes the young guys feel cool. It just makes me lament all the models that could have been... Dave
  14. Awesome. Keep up the good work. I'm planning on doing Sealion in 1/144 as she was for operations of Vietnam. Dave
  15. An absolutely amazing book that cuts through a lot of the misconceptions about Midway. Highly, highly recommended. Dave
  16. You, sir, have made my year... Dave
  17. This is probably the highlight of my month. I have been wanting to do an MKI for the longest time. Dave
  18. Did you do extra work on that IFR probe besides painting or did it come that clean and detailed? Any trick to to lining up your holes or did you just eyeball it? And final question, any extra for the attachment points for the flaps or is kit surface area sufficient for a strong joint? Beautiful work as always, so close to done. Dave
  19. Heck yeah, Hawaii to go along with your Eagle sheet. Dave
  20. Janne, As always, your skill impresses me. I have enjoyed catching up with this build and look forward to your progress on my favorite US aircraft. Cheers, Dave
  21. I remember going to Radio Island in Morehead City, NC where a MEU had it's equipment laid out for loading on an ARG. There was a long line of 105 howitzers and on one of them, a Marine was sleeping on the barrel, arms and legs hanging over like a big cat on a tree branch. The LTC I was with joked that he was security and the howitzers weren't going anywhere with the guy sleeping on them. I assume he was fuming on the inside. Dave
  22. I think it is awesome that people have been willing to expend the money and time to search for these famous wrecks. I wish that more sailors entering the Navy had an interest or knowledge of our history (this is not a condemnation of our youth, there are many great kids coming in to the submarine force, I am simply stating a fact). I for one would love to see the aircraft and bell (if it can be found) raised and displayed as a testament to the men who lost their lives, but the wreck itself is a grave and should be left alone. Cheers, Dave
  23. I know Ken has already responded and he is certainly the expert in the area, but I just wanted to come in with another positive statement. I absolutely love these kits. Yes, they have some short-run "issues", but the choices are awesome. I check the site every few days looking to see if there is a new kit out so I can go buy it. Dave
