  1. Tamiya would be my guess, too. But then again, it could be the Academy kit. Pretty nice kit as well. Bo
  2. What kit is this?? Great work but it'd be nice to know the kit. Bo
  3. Oh, let's see. A new Tamiya/Hasegawa/Revell 48th scale Curtiss P-40B/C will do for starters!! Nothing fancy like full engine / open cowl; but, a detailed cockpit will do just fine!! Bo
  4. I feel a 'War Story' coming on. You do know the different between a 'War Story' and a 'Fairy Tale'?? Fairy Tales begin with 'once upon a time' and a 'war story' begins; This is not $hit, there I was, at Ft Hood circa mid to late 1970s, at the Aerial Range, my Army Reserve Unit was having it's Annual Summer Camp getting Gunnery Qualified. That day, we were shooting 2.75 FFAR, inert warheads. We were flying our OLD UH-1Bs and the active Army Advisers from Ft. Hood had a NEW AH-1G Cobra. Everyone of our Reserve Pilots had Vietnam experience and some of the Active Army guys did as well, but
  5. B Model Elevators, ALL of our UH-1Bs had the tailboom mod which encluded the bigger vertical fin and inverted Sync elevators. This was in the Mid 1970s. Later, we got all UH-1Ms. Working at Bell for 31yrs. I seen Bell that a production model 212 and mod it to the 1st model 412 and then 4 other generations of improvements. But still had features of the original 212 in some areas!!! Ditto on the 206 JetRanger series! I feel sure that's what #4 is but I can't prove it(the engine inlet is suspect, not like production Cs). Found photos of UH-1C with 20MM chunker AND nose mounted pitot, on t
  6. Very likely that H Model was a 'Field Mod' of a D Model Huey. Added the -L13 engine. I don't know WHY the pitot was moved to the roof other than clearance for the 20MM Chunker feed chute which ran between the left Crew seat and center console under the instrument panel??? Didn't want the electrical wiring and air lines to get in the way?????? You're so very correct, there were MANY changes that took place during the entire UH-1 series production it's very difficult to track them all. Bo
  7. I've learned long ago to NEVER say NEVER. Especially when getting A/C out the door is paramount. The -10 Pilots Manual Checklist for the UH-1C/M had autorotation Airspeeds for both Roof and Nose mounted Pitot. Min Rate of Decent and Max Glide distance. When and if C had roof mounted pitot???????? C models and all Mikes, that I've seen and flown, had the same type Sync elevator as did the Hotel Huey. An inverted airfoil. Early C’s ???????? B Models our Unit flew, I flew as well, had the Mod for the enlarged vertical fin AND, the Hotel style sync elevator, an inverted airfoil. The
  8. Several things. (I don't have the kit to look at, okay) The cut out opening on the transmission cowl, just ahead of the engine inlet screens, is for the transmission mounted generator and for cooling of that generator. SHOULD be ONLY on the left side. The pitot is mounted on the roof and that where the Mike 'M' model Huey's pitot was. The Charlie 'C' was nose mounted where the left AM antenna post is for the kit. The Mike model was a bigger engined Charlie. The Main Rotor blade cord scales out to just over 21 inches. Both the C and M blade cord was 27 inches.(kit owner measured the blade
  9. Not my scale but that's one good looking Snake today. Axel achieved what modelers strive for, realism!! Just excellent!! Bo
  10. Gonna show my age, but when I came home from Vietnam in 1970, the FIRST song I remember was "My Rubber Duckie"!!! Horrible!! Another also ran from the 50's is, "Flying Purple People Eater"!!! Sick!! Bo
  11. LOL!! We always said the ONLY reason someone buys a helicopter is because they can't get a TRUCK to do the job!!! The pressurized cabin adds alot of cost and weight that's NOT necessary for truck work. Short hops from downtown to downtown or downtown to airport would be a market, but ya don't need to fly at 25K Ft!! You do realize that this is just MHO, don't ya?? I DO know the 609 program is 10 years or more BEHIND scheduled certification!! Bo
  12. The pressurized cabin is the real issue. Can't make big doors and don't need to fly at 25K Ft. A 'truck' tiltrotor has many more uses than a 'sports car' tiltrotor. With the tilt funtion, it's very, very difficult to hold cost down as to compete with fixed wing a/c. Can't compete with payload either. Wrong design. And, there were several hundred sold at the project cost of the 609. Meeting that projected cost ......... now that's the problem. Oh, re the F-35, put me down for a 'doubting Thomas' on that one, too. Bo
  13. Unless you can muffle jet thrust, it's very difficult to hover!! Ya can feather a prop. Bo
  14. IMHO, the 609 is the wrong a/c for the 1st Commerical T/R. It competes with Biz-jets/turbo-props IF they can keep cost down, and that's the challenge. Developed back when the company was run by fixed wing guy. He wanted an airplane that can hover, NOT a helicopter that flies like an airplane. BIG difference. IMHO, it should have been a bigger non-pressurized cabin with big or sliding door for e-z cargo/litter access. Rear ramp would be okay, too. Then the Coast Guard would be flying it for long range SAR missions. My 2 cents. Bo
  15. The test pilot's last statement caught my attention: "I hope we don't wait for 10 yrs or wait for a big contract to develope this techniology". That was EXACTLY my thinking back in 1977 when I wrote the first Flight Manual for Bell's XV-15 Tilt-rotor!! I thought we'd have commerical tilt-rotors everywhere. Well, I'm still waiting!! Development cost is such that companies just don't do anything on their own. Period!! Bo
  16. Dr. Murphey is to be commended for his efforts here. IIRC, he discovered these grave sites after the internment of his father in that cemetery, nearly 20 years ago. He got the cemetery to mark these graves as a unit and had a RFC marker posted to commemorate their service. Ranking Officers of the Canadian Air Force and the RAF have participated in past events and will also speak at this Memorial service. If you can, be there, to show your support and respect for these fallen heroes!! Bo Roberts
  17. For those of you that may not know, the RFC trained many pilots in the Ft. Worth, TX area during the Great War. Some of these young men loss their life during training accidents and are buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth. Dr. Murphey has organized and promoted a Salute to these young men who gave the 'Last Full Measure'. He asked that I post this here so those of us in this area can join in this Salute. This may not be the correct forum, but forgive me. This IS worthy. The Royal Flying Corps Memorial Service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery in Ft. Worth, TX at 10:30
  18. CA for canopies?? I just wonder why you need such a strong bond to hold down your canopy?? I've been using white glue / Krystal Klear for 40 years and NEVER have one to come off!! I can easily blend in white glue with a damp finger and lint-free rag. With CA, ya gotta sand it and THEN polish out the scratches caused by sanding. Just wondering??????? Bo Roberts
  19. Frank, At one time, and I think it's still the law, even possessing the equipment to tap land line phones, was a Federal offense!! Not so with computers. Every 15 yr old has one or two!! Ditto with equipment to pick up air transmitted phone calls. Ya can buy it at Radio Shack!! I NEVER give out my CC info on anything but a landline WIRED telephone!! Both times my info 'went south' was right after, one day, an on-line model order. Beats me!! Bo Roberts
  20. For sure don't get me to lying, cause I DON'T know. I DO KNOW the Obama Administration passed sweeping changes to Credit lender and how they can and can not treat those of us that use CCs. And, I DO KNOW, on two separate times today, my CC Company, based in Nevada, BTW, said I CAN write that instead of my signature. So if ya see some big ugly guy standing on a street corner asking for a buck to take his wife out for dinner, that'll be me and the restaurant won't accept my CC!! Be generous, too!! Bo Roberts
  21. Never mind the vertigo thingy, ya gotta be in better physical condition than any pro football player to climg above the ozone layer pulling a 30lb tool bag behind ya!! Then ya gotta get down the same way!! I'd parachute down!! Yeah, right!! LOL!! Bo Roberts
  22. No, unless you call 2000 miles close. I don't EVEN know anyone in Delaware!! Wait, isn't that where our VP, Joe Biden, lives??? LOL!! Bo Roberts
  23. And you know, I don't mind them using caution. That makes it safer for all of us. Just today, my wife and her sister had lunch and when my sister-in-law used her CC, they came back to the table and asked for her 'photo id'. And they've been to that restaurant many times before and this was a 'first'!! Bo Robertrs
  24. Larry, You two guys got me concerned, so again, I called my CC Company's Customer Service and asked that same question in two different ways. Again, that conversation was recorded for training/security purposes. Both times they said just writing in "see photo ID" along with a valid Photo ID, serves as proof of identity. I asked if I needed my signature and 'see photo ID' and they said; 'No, only 'see photo ID' is okay. And, they did say any merchant can refuse any transaction for any reason; but, this is NOT a valid reason. Bo Roberts
  25. Strange, because just today, I asked my CC Company about that when I got my new card. He said he would ask, put me on hold, then returned in 30 secs or so and said that would be just fine to do so. My conversations was 'recorded for security/training purposes'. That CC is NOT and ID. Airlines even require photo ID to board. Guessing security issues are taking priority over some outdated agreement. Granted, if I don't have photo ID, a merchant would be advised to refuse a transaction!! I do have several business that ask of photo ID and I thank them for asking. If the name on the CC and
