  1. I contacted the retailer, who called his bank immediately. They told him their payment system was secure with no breaches. Which makes me wonder about my computer now. I have firewalls and virus protection, but should I be doing more? Should I be careful now about an-line purchases from my computer?

    Cheers,

    RIchard

    Richard,

What I know about computer security, you couldn't fill a thimble; but, why would the crooks monitor an individual and get one set of info, when they can monitor a business and get MANY sets of info?? I'm guessing even a crook will go to places they can get the most for their efforts!!

And my computers are as safe as I know how to make them without taking a hammer to 'em!! Then they'd be safe!! LOL!!

Sign of the times I guess. Never had car thieves until we got cars!! LOL!!

  2. One more thing that I just now confirmed with my CC company: Instead of putting ur signature in that signature block on the back, write: 'See Photo ID'. Of course this don't help with on line orders, but makes it a bit harder for anyone to use a stolen card. I guess. At lease they can't dupe ur signature and sell it, too.

BTW Crazy Don, my CC company notified me that there was an issue, I didn't need to tell them. And they offered NO explanation HOW my card was compromised. Guessing they'd just be 'guessing', too.

Sorry Sprue Bros. if I caused any harm to your or your excellent company. But we'd all better be 'On Guard' alot more now.

  3. I would say you owe Sprue Brothers a apology Bo, you did plaster this over every modeling forum you could find without getting the scoop first

Yeah I understand, do I need to apologize to myself, too?? LOL!! I'm NOT trying to harm anyone, rather give a 'heads-up' to everyone using CC for online purchase.

I asked this question to the 'Professional Security/IT' person: "Is it possible that retailers don't even know that they have been compromised"?

His answer was, 'If Apple didn't know that a mirror site was operating behind theirs, I promise others don't either'!! I'm NOT a computer geek, for sure, but from what this pro said, the MS security was broken and now the crooks have all necessary info to set up mirror sites that you, I and the retailers don't know is operating. Data can be picked off at will!!

Again the bad guys don't stay in any one place, but move around making it hard, if not impossible to trace.

Bottom line is Sprue Bros. IS a great model retailer that trys everything possible to keep their site safe. BUT, it's also possible that these events are beyond their or any other mechant's ability to control. So we may all expect the CC compromise a lot more in the future!! Just guessing of course. The above applies equally to each of our own attempts to secure our computers!!

  4. When you are dealing with a CLEAN site, you are about as secure as you

    can get.

    Ditto Crazy Don....

I guess my purpose is to notify all, IF MicroSoft has really been compromised, it's gonna happen alot more often to all of us!! There is NO SUCH thing as a SECURE site, now more than ever!!

I VERY seldom use my CC on line!! I cringe when I think of ever 15 yr has a PC with time on their hands to CHALLENGE the security system!! About the time a defense is designed, there are those hard at work to defeat it!! And sooner, rather than later, they do!

So my suggestion to all y'all, is to WATCH IT!!

  5. SB is located in Missouri. Your card was used in Wilmington, DE. I'd hardly call that "close" to SB, and it's doubtful that someone at SB stole your card during the day, hopped on a plane, and bought shoes in DE that night. It seems like you are blaming SB for this, not only here, but at other forums (HS and Z5 at least), without any real proof that it's related to SB at all. Maybe the number was stolen a week ago when the card was last used, or even before, or maybe it is on your end, but blaming SB (or any company) on multiple forums within a few hours of getting word of your card being used somewhere else without any real proof seem very uncool.

So you said SB called you. What did they say? Did they say their credit card system was compromised?

Well, yeah, the first time I ordered from Hong Kong and the scam came outta Vietnam. But both cases it would appear that I was traveling, you see, and just might pass as legit.

From what I heard, the MS breach was the first time ever this was none, and all of our personal data may be compromised. There is NO SUCH thing as total security even from the Pros!! Retailers may not even know themselve that their security is breached!!

  6. I think if someone has your CC number, either it was grabbed via a number generator as indicated above. Or you've fallen for some email phishing scam and given them access to your information.

Well, for SURE the later is NOT the case.

It just seems odd two times my CC was stolen was right after I ordered on line from a model company NOT near my home, and both times its fraud use was closer to the model retailer, than me!! Wonder if it's not an inside job from the CC company!!

I suggested that to them tonite when they called.

  7. Well you've got conflicting information there. "MS's Operating System" and "MS Database thing" are two, completely, different things. Windows is as secure as you make it. Run a firewall and it's extremely unlikely that someone's going to gain access to your machine... that is unless you've given them access to your machine in some other way...which isn't Microsoft's fault. There are litterally dozens of ways someone can obtain your CC information off of your computer, and none of them really have anything to do with Microsoft. Those ways are just as easily accomplished on any machine, Windows run or not.

Well, the Computer man today said that the MS breach was a HUGH problem for MS!! The news media did mention something last week about security allowing viruses to be spread.

I do have a secure firewall, and every so often it tells me all is well!! Yeah right!! No such thing as security!! Any defense can and will be overcome!!

  8. I can tell you that using your credit card online is safer than going to a restaurant and giving the waitress your card.

In my opinion, the more appropriate thing to do would be find the exact source of the problem before you drag any other party into it.

Many people make the mistake of assuming that someone got their card information from a website that they ordered something from.....99.999 percent of the time that is NOT where the card information was gleaned. More likely than not, your card number was obtained through use of a random card generator. Hackers will find a new online merchant or a merchant that has not established good safety protocol and will run a generator for very miniscule amounts (typically a penny). They get a list of all the numbers that go through....BAM! Shopping spree time! Another option is the aforementioned waitress....you hand her your card to pay your check....that card is out of your sight for at least 5 minutes....plenty of time to casually jot down your card number

    First off, read my edit.

Second off, I'm trying to give others a 'heads up' about the MS database thing!

Thirdly, How does one verify WHO stole my info?? Beats me!!

  9. Strange, I haven't used my CC in more than a week, but just today, I ordered on line from Sprue Bros and tonite, my CC Company calls and advised of someone buying $74 worth of shoes in a Wilmeton, DE shoe store. Someone, Sprue or maybe me, has a security issue. I heard just today that MS's operating system was compromised last week. May see a bunch more of this in the future.

Has anyone else had trouble like this in the past?? One other time I ordered some models from an oriental model company, and got a call saying someone in Vietnam ordered CD from Japan!!

I wish model retailers would go back to telephone sells!!

EDIT: Sprue Bros. did contact me tonite about this. Not only do they ship fast, they do everything FAST!!

Good show Sprue Bros.!! Good show!!

  10. Bingo. Tbe bomb bay door on the B-57 is a rotating pallet with the bombs mounted on the inner surface.

    HTH,

    Andre

Thanks, Andre. One would think the Airfix instructions would so note that the bombay roof can be used to depicit a closed bay, huh??

    Bo Roberts

  11. Who's built this kit?? The instructions don't show the bombay closed and I don't find any parts that will close the bombay.

How does the real thing operate? Clamshell like a B-17 for example? Or does the entire bay rotate to open and close??

    HELP!!!

  13. HELP!!!

I'm wanting to make a early U-2C without that long dorsal spine and Cutting Edge made two Conversions that replaced the spine with a U-2A type flat upper fuselage.

I think these CE Conversions are 48287 and 48325. Anyone have one or both these conversions that they can live without??

My starting point will be the Testor's kit that has that big ole ugly spine!!

  14. Great job! Great-looking aeroplane! Now let me get this straight - you don't start on anything new until you finish what you've started? Now there's a novel idea. I doubt it's going to catch on in the wonderful world of aircraft modelling, though. :D

    Regards,

    Learstang

LOL!! You’re most likely correct. Guess it's just me and possibility a function of the size of my work area, but I've always like to finish up on anything I start BEFORE starting another mess!!

    Bo Roberts

  15. Which kit is that and the scale, please? Cool camo scheme.

I'm sorry!! And I'm the one that's pushing for this info.

It's the Special Hobby 48th scale kit. Sorry, I'll not do that again, ....... until next time!! LOL!!

  17. They played the 911 call on CNN and the guy refused to shift into neutral, even though the 911 operator asked him to. He said he didn't know what might happen (um, your engine disconnects from the drive train and then you can stop the car?). Now I agree that the problem shouldn't have happened and must be fixed, but he takes a bit of the blame for his wild ride continuing for refusing to take action that could have stopped it.

I guess I'm a bit skeptical about people who say they tried to shift into neutral, but couldn't. Not saying it couldn't possibly be true, but find it difficult to believe that cars are designed that way. I can definitely understand an interlock to prevent shifting into reverse while moving, but not into neutral. I shifted my RAV4 into neutral at 50 mph yesterday (I was coming to a red light and there was no one behind me) and it worked fine.

I heard that 911 conversation this morning, too. He was toooooo busy driving to shift to NEUTRAL??? Give me a break!! Yet he had time to call 911!!! Right!!

Sounds like a set-up to me!!

Head of the line for Darwin Awards??? For sure!!

    Bo Roberts

  18. I'm just guessing as I don't drive those Japanese POS, but I'd guess that when someone puts it in neutral, the load is removed from the drive train and the engine hits red-line real fast!! Drivers think it's still driving the wheels and think nothing has happened. It should be coasting and the brakes should work just fine!! When the car stops, the engine will still be red-line but not going anywhere!! Put it in PARK fast, then turn off the engine.

Now, IF one can NOT put it in NEUTRAL, then ALL Toyotas should be remover from our roads immediately!! They're unsafe anytime the engine is running!!

One should NOT turn off the engine while driving down the road. You may NOT be able to do that anyway unless the XMSN is in the PARK position.

    Bo Roberts

  19. Yes, I think that CHP officer is not too likely to be a Darwin Award recipient. The reality isn't as simple as you might like to think it is.

    Al P.

Unless those 'clever Toyota engineers' designed it so one can NOT shiflt it to neutral, it IS all that simple. ALL my US cars can be shifted into neutral while driving!!

I'll give you that reaction time is critical, so I can see one running through a garage or hitting something in front, or behind you. But by the time a car hits 120 MPH and ya can think to call 911, ......... no excuses!!
