  1. Nothing "wrong" about 1/72 scale. It may not be "right" for you.
  2. Out of the box (kit only), the Six is 202 parts, something like 16 are photoetched brass. Interior detail is good, but if you want even better, buy the Meng resin bits. This markets to the best of both worlds: Good detail in plastic for those are satisified with a great kit (soooo much better than the old Hasegawa in this scale), and if you really want to go crazy splitting (and painting) hairs to impress contest judges, get the resin add-ons. If Meng had included all of this stuff in the original package, it may have been discouraging to the average modeler as well as putting it out of reach
  3. Finished mine today for FSM review. Sneak peek:
  4. Well, there you go! No need to wait for me to do it. This one's even bigger! Nice job, Vaildog!
  5. Got the Hasegawa kit today from Tokyo Hobby. The decal sheet, even though it is not printed by Cartograf, looks great. I do like the scheme, but then all art is in the eye of the beholder. I plan on beholding this 1/72 one soon.
  6. On the other hand, I love the special commemorative schemes. The more color the better. This one is on its way to me from Japan. I believe there's a great big spade on the top. If you don't like, don't buy it, don't model it. There's PLENTY of gray on gray battle birds you can model in the meantime. And looking at them will help put me to sleep. In the real world, these commemorative schemes are short-lived. They may contribute to esprit de corps and recruiting somewhat, but most of them are attractive to air enthusiasts like me. And I like modeling them:
  7. You're going about it the wrong way. Paint your canopy rails yellow(ish) and print the names in reverse (black background, clear lettering). Then just lay the decal over the yellow rails, touch up with black around the edges if needed, and you're gold. You may want to print multiple sets and stack 'em on the model to ensure a dense black.
  8. Don't want to upset the apple cart, but I wonder about that curvy "Sabre Font" USAF on the wings of Sabres. That might be more difficult to prove. I think those were painted on at the factory and may have been black. Just guessing.
  9. Filling out my collection of Sabres with the Fujimi F-86F in John Glenn's "MiG Mad Marine" markings, a combination of Airfix and Fujimi decals. I painted the yellow I.D. bands and edged them with black decal stripes. Finish is Alclad. The other two are Hasegawa F-86D Sabre Dog and Special Hobby F-86H Sabre Hog.
  10. Trouble is that the current kits are for the E-2C (or the E-2C Hawkeye 2000) which didn't get into service until after the Vietnam conflict. To do an A or B model, you'd have to either find an old Fujimi boxing in 1/72 scale, or find a backdating conversion (none that I know of). Since the 1/48 scale kit is a C, you'd have to back date it. Biggest differences are in the shape of the nose forward of the cockpit and the air-conditioning scoops on top and sides of the fuselage. The old props were squared-off four-blade units.
  11. Thanks! Darren, actually, a camouflaged 174th bird is one of the decal choices!
  12. I just completed this Special Hobby “Sabre Hog” in the kit’s MASS ANG “Irish” markings. Not a bad kit. I didn’t bother with the little photoetched vortex generators under the stabs - just too small to handle and won’t be missed by viewers (unless I tell them - oops, I just did). I used the kit decals except for the red fuselage commander’s stripes. Mine folded up and I couldn’t untangle them. If you do this one, cut the top fuselage stripes in half (left and right) to make them easier to handle. I ended up using decal stripes applied individually. I left off the bottom stripes (there I go conf
  13. I just got the USAF version of Wingman Models Fix-It C-130J-30 from Sprue Bros., and it looks great! Don't know about the fit as that is a project for another day. But it looks to be worth every penny. Nice job!
  14. It's actually a color that matches FS 16515. Apparently the RCAF preferred this color over the USAF FS 16473. Boeing also likes this color for some of its assemblies. So it's a coincidence rather than an alternate name. Before Testor bottled it, I'd never heard the term "Canadian Voodoo Grey." I doubt the RCAF calls it that.
  15. Only the "demonstrator" (not really, it was a TF-15A/F-15B) was in the Euro 1 camo, all others in overall gunship gray.
  16. Well, for RCAF Voodoos, yes. USAF birds were painted in FS 16473. But Canadian Voodoo Gray is also "Boeing Gray" used on things like E-3 Sentry AWACS (overall) and on things like wing-root fairings on Boeing airliners (and maybe others).
  17. I'm all for one, and would like to see a C-141 (and what the hell, a plastic C-5) as well.
  18. That's Alclad "dark aluminum" that I darken a bit more with a few drops of gloss black enamel.
  19. The trouble with dry transfers is rubbing them off the sheet onto a small area on your model. You have to align it PERFECTLY because once you rub it on, you can't move it. By applying it to clear sheet, you can more easily place adjacent numbers on a base line, then move the entire image around on the model as with any decal. I have no trouble making decal edges disappear as you can see from the photo. I trim close, apply them to a "Future" substrate (it's now called Pledge acrylic floor shine or something), and use decal solvent.
  20. I’ve been wanting to do this one for many years, ever since I saw a photo of it in Ray Wagner’s “The North American Sabre” (Doubleday 1963). Even 53 years after its publication, it is still the best book on the Sabre. Anyway, there’s this shot of a Dog with all the equipment and personnel surrounding it, and even though I’ll never model all that equipment (including a fuel truck!), I knew I wanted to model this guy. Do you notice anything odd about the markings? Apparently, when the Air Force decided to go with the large “U.S. AIR FORCE” on the fuselage (instead of the small legends on the f
  21. I gotta say, that's the best 1/72 camo Hun I've ever seen. Beautiful work!
  22. Even better, just throw in a paper ad for (future?) Barracuda updates and let the buyer choose to spend the extra money. Believe me, there aren't many who will want to spend extra on the kit. I would. You would. There me be maybe a hundred more who would, too. But not enough to make it worthwhile to Revell. Maybe enough to allow Roy to make some money, though!
