Doc, That looks great! I bought some casting resin last year to try and make a water base for my PBY-5A, but I am still trying to figure out how to do it without using $100 worth of casting resin. That PBY requires a HUGE base. Keep up the good work. Your green vinyl idea has given me some new ideas! Chris

Swanny, Looks outstanding. I REALLY like the yellow nose. It is someting different after seeing all the red and blue nosed Mustangs. Sweet build. Chris

From now on, your Delta Tau Chi name is pinto..... Why Pinto? Why not?!

Omer, Here's a couple I scanned from the book "Age of Orion". Enjoy, Chris

That looks sweet, Scott! I never get tired of seeing the red-bottomed doras. Great job on a colorful subject! Chris

Progress on the Me-410
Chris Kethan replied to Chris Kethan's topic in Defense Of The Reich Group Build
Scott, Yes, I will post photos. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the cockpit before I closed the fuselage. Oh well. This kit isn't a shake and bake kit! ;) I started it while the subassemblies on the 410 were drying. I wish I had chosen one of the Tamiya 190's in my stash instead. From what I've been told and what I've read, the PM D11 kit isn't a great likeness of the D11 OOB. There are numerous shape issues. I chose to model mine OOB, because I didn't intend this project to get involved. It was supposed to allow me to throw something together easily while the 410 drie -
I mentioned this in one of the earlier threads about the P-8. Just for info, the vertical devices on the Boeing wingtip are called winglets. The wingtips that are swept, ala the 767-400, are called "rakelets". Not a big deal, but maybe that will help in differentiating between the two. I'll believe this P-8 program when I actually see aircraft in fleet squadrons. The patrol community taunted us all the time with talk of a new airframe.. Anyone remember the LRAACA? Chris

Progress on the Me-410
Chris Kethan replied to Chris Kethan's topic in Defense Of The Reich Group Build
OK..... Finally time for an update. I wasn't able to model much during the last 6 weeks, and when I had a little free time, I spent most of that free time masking the 410's greenhouse canopy! ;) When it got especially tedious - (which was often, because the canopy has to be masked on both the inside & outside) - I worked on my 1/48 Promodeller Fw-190D11. It is a mostly OOB build with a few small details added. On to the 410.. The cockpit & airframe are complete awaiting an alcohol bath and a paintjob! Here's a shot showing the canopies.. That's it for tonight -
CR7Driver, I've got this sheet, and I'm not gonna use the Quantico markings. If you want them, let me know. Maybe you have a spare sheet you want to trade? If not, I can just send them to you. Chris

Doc, That build is S***-hot! I have been following this one waiting to see the finished diorama, and I just had to jump in with a comment. It REALLY looks nice. Great quality build and you've done it pretty quickly. I haven't even started my Kingfisher, because I'm trying to finish my DOTR entries. Once again, outstanding job. Chris

Bill, I will be watching this one closely. I always look forward to your builds, even if it's a subject I don't want to model. However, modelling a 190 is right up my alley. I just purchased the Eduard A8 kit before Christmas, so I'll be watching your build to help spot the pitfalls. Great job, as usual Bill! Chris

Don't forget the thumb.... (Often overlooked in the shocker because of his little brother with the naughty rep.) Chris

Karl, Great work. Those Italeri kits can be a bear to get together. I noticed that you used squadron 'green' putty... Have you tried the Tamiya putty? I used to use the green, but after I tried the Tamiya ONCE, I threw my green in the trash. The tamiya goes on smoother, dries faster, and is easier to sand. If you mix some liquid testors cement with the tamiya putty, you get a great filler that is really thin. Once again, the Shocker looks great. (That's what she said) Chris

The RLM 66 is a great color - just drybrush lightly until you get the effect you are looking for. After you finish, lightly finish with a little 'steel' color. It really highlights things nicely. Chris

Check out this build in progress. Excellent chipping technique
Chris Kethan replied to jr_rules2's topic in Props
Cool Chipping, and even cooler paint scheme. I've never seen that one before... Chris -
I've built the PM kit. It's a really nice kit. The cockpit is well detailed and it comes with PE dive brakes, which really add to the model. All of the inner dive brakes were molded in plastic, so it was a real PITA to drill them all out by hand! Masking that green house canopy was a time consuming task as well. The only fit issue I recall was the Bomb Bay. It fit OK, but it took some fiddling to get it to fit properly and allow enough space for the BB doors. Enjoy the kit. It builds well and looks great when finished. Here's a shot of mine.. Chris

The USN P-3 community uses a relief pilot on the long patrols. We called them 3P's (third pilot) instead of relief pilots. BTW, the copilot was called the 2P and the Capt is called the PPC - Patrol Plane Commander The LEAST of that crew's worries is the Plane Captain. They need to sweat their meeting with the Wing Commander. It was HIS jet, not the PC's. Chris
-
More like "BONE-HEADED Landing". That's one the crew would like to have back. Chris
-
Me too. Entry for my 1/48 Kingfisher sent. Chris

Ray, It's a great kit. I finished mine a couple of years ago. The only problem I had was blending the pilot's side windscreen into the fuselage. Other than that, I don't recall using much putty on the seams - if any. Just make sure you have alot of workbench space and a place to display it. I can't tell you how many times I unintentionally 'cleared' my workbench while building this beast! Good luck, have fun, and keep us posted. Chris

Remeber that Hobby Island is now only open Thursday thru Sunday. I found that out the hard way last Tuesday after driving all the way across town. Chris

Jay, That is really, really nice. Almost makes me want to move mine up the to-do list! That finish is superb, and I like the way the exhaust staining came out. Very convincing. Chris

What about VFA-37? That's the squadron I'd like to do.. Chris

What squadron's fly the single seat super hornet and what squadron's fly the station wagon? I recently bought a Revell single seat super hornet and I'm trying to decide what markings I want to use. Thanks, Chris
