Does anyone have this sheet that they would be willing to sell? I bid for one on EBAY, but the price went a little too high. TIA, Chris

Any Commercial pilots in the house here?
Chris Kethan replied to modelman62's topic in Airliner Modeling
Pat, They are pretty close. It's all weight dependant. I think David's range of 130-145 is pretty good. When I used to fly the MD-90 also, we flew it alot at max takeoff weight. Since it was heavier than the -88, I seem to remember that Vr was above 150. I went and checked my closet to see if I still had my MD-88/90 books, and I don't. I threw them away after I finally moved on to the 767. Chris -
Inspiration Gallery!!!
Chris Kethan replied to The Mikester's topic in Defense Of The Reich Group Build
Here's a few from my Luftwaffe flight line... 1/48 PM Ju-88C6 1/48 Hasegawa Bf-109K4 1/48 Tamiya Fw-190 F8 1/48 Tamiya Fw-190D9 Although this one isn't from the DOTR timeframe, I thought I'd include it anyway. 1/48 Tamiya Bf-109 E4 (with Adolf Galland's markings) I really enjoy seeing all the outstanding work posted in this gallery. This is going to be a great GB! Enjoy! Chris -
My 2 year old Twins went to school today, so I had some time for modelling! Got the cockpit finished and most of the construction of the -152 done. Hope to get it painted in the next week. I also opened up the 410, and cleaned up all the cockpit parts. I hope to get them painted tonight and maybe get the wings together. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to get a third entry done. :D Chris

What parts do you need to build an 'A'? The kit is the PM Me-410B-1. Whatever I don't use building my 'B', you are welcome to have. Chris

Matt, Let me look when I get home tomorrow. I am going to build the PM 410 for the DOTR group build. Any parts I don't need, you are welcome to have. Chris

Sweet trio, Bill. As always, I'll be watching this thread closely! Keep posting! Chris

Thanks, Scotsman! Boy, do I feel like an idiot. The A-4 canopy was listed when I did a search for the F-4, but I never clicked on the item to view it. I'm off to order one now. Chris

Does anyone make a Vacuform Canopy for an 1/48 F-4J? I searched Hannant's, and I couldn't find one. I really need a flexible canopy, because I screwed up putting in my BB cockpit and now the fuselage is a little too wide for the kit canopy. I tried to make it fit, but tonight I cracked it. I already tried to widen the one I broke, and I also tried to make my Monogram canopy fit, but no dice. I think my only options are either the one piece closed canopy with a buttload of putty, or a vacuform. I really don't want to close up the pit and hide the BB cockpit. Any help or ideas? Chris

Thanks for all the timely replies, gentlemen! Now I need to make a run back down there to pick up the kit! Chris

I just got back from the LHS, where I manged to only buy what was on my list and NO extra kits. ;) While I was there, I was looking at the 1/48 Hasegawa Tomcats and the 'Red Rippers' boxing caught my eye. Here's my question.... Are the decals in these hasegawa kits worth using? The only hasegawa jet kits I have built are the A-4C and the A-7E. Both of those kits had pretty decent decals. I like the VF-11 retro scheme, but I wasn't sure about the kit decals. Something I also noticed was the 'Jolly Rogers' boxing of the kit was $17 MORE than the others. TIA, Chris

Brett, Instead of painting it black, use "Aircraft Interior Black" from Model Master. It is actually a very dark Grey. It is a much more realistic color than regular flat Black. Chris

Ross, I don't build in 1/72, but I use a very sharp white colored pencil.... I just paint the intruments flat black and when it's dry I lightly rub the colored pencil around the inside of the intrument. It works kinda like dry-brushing. Only the high points inside the face of the instrument actually get any of the white. When it's done, just put a drop of future over the dial to simulate the glass. Looks pretty good, and it's a minimal amount of fuss. Chris

Brett, IIRC, the blade angle of the kit prop is about 0 degrees - appropriate for a model on the ground. If you model it inflight, the best option would probably be to model the props with a clear plastic disc.. The white position lights were only visible from the rear 180 degree quadrant of the aircraft. the lights were oval shape, with a shield that prevented them from being visible fropm the front. I don't have my NATOPS anymore, so I don't have any close-up pix. I never knew the exact flash rates, but I remember the flash rate to be about once every 1.5 seconds.. HTH, Chris

Brett, The red 'rotating' lights are actually red strobes - both top and bottom. The bottom one also has a white strobe co-located with it. The white portion is closest to the fuselage, and the smaller, red portion of the light is mounted on the white strobe (it looks like a miniature upside down wedding cake). The white nav lights were located on the rearmost part of the fuselage.... There were actually 2 white nav lights...one on top of the fuselage just forward of the MAD boom (and aft of the rudder), and the second was located on the underside of the fuselage forward of the MAD boom.

Very Nice, Greg. You really did a great job on a $10 kit! Chris

Good looking model, Karl. I was digging through the stash the other day and saw my Prowler... It reminded me that you were building one, and I wondered if you had gotten around to finishing it with your busy schedule. Obviously, you have. Once again, great job! After seeing yours, mine has moved up the to do list. Chris

Dick, The conversion looks like it should be fairly easy. To convert the P-3C UIII kit into a RNZAF P-3K, you will need to leave off the SRS antennas (10 total) and fill in the holes. The SRS antennas are the blade antennas (part A24, A21, A26) located all over the aircraft. There were 3 on the Bomb bay doors, 2 on the lower side of the empenage, 2 on top of the fuselage, and 3 on the lower fuselage. I'm looking at the only picture I have of a "K" and it looks like it only has one HF long wire antenna (the longer antenna) as opposed to 2 on the Charlie. The optic window and the bubble

Got my 757/767 type in the sim, also. Like Murph, the first time I landed a 727, MD-88, MD-90, & 767-400 was with revenue pax onboard. All of our training is done in the sim, but the sim doesn't really fly like the real thing. Close enough for the feds, though. I never logged any of my sim time in the Navy once I got my wings. All the sims we had in flight school had to be logged in order for us to get our wings. Chris

Thundergrunt, Vince Maddux of VMDecals recently designed and printed a sheet for the 1/72 P-3C kit. It doesn't have any VP-5 decals on it, but it DOES include decals from my old squadron, the "World Famous Crawfishers" of VP-94. Do a search here on ARC... there are some pictures of the artwork for Vince's sheet. There were 4 squadrons IIRC.. I think super scale also has some sheets that include VP-45, VP-47, and others. HTH, Chris

I can't believe I missed this thread. That is absolutely STUNNING! Please post more, Richy! Chris

I flew with a captain here at Delta who flew F-4's in VF-194, and he said that the expression came from the Mopeds that they rented while they were on cruise. The sound they made was described by one drunk pilot as "Hud'd Hud'n" and the expression became a mantra for VF-194. Straight from the horse's mouth.... Chris

Thanks David. I'm saving this info. Much better than winging it like I normally do. Chris

Chuck, As a former P-3 pilot, I would not like to be out over blue water at 200' , in a SWEPT wing jet, with only 2 jet engines. Not a good idea. The 737 is a great airframe, but maritime patrol is really not a good mission for the 737. I'm still not convinced the Navy is going to be able to make this project work. The whole reason the P-3 was a turboprop was for the "instantaneous" power available and the miserly fuel comsumption when operating at low altitude. The P-3 burned about 5000 Lbs/hour with all four turning and less if you loitered one. The Fuel flow of the jet is considera
