  1. G'day people, I spent today doing some fun stuff at last. The cockpit tub and fuselage sides got some paint, The macro lens is very unforgiving - looks like i need to do some touch ups! Sidewalls next, I have also been busy with ordnance, cheers, Pappy
  2. G'day Scott, I would recommend the 0.4mm Aizu masking tape. I would put down a layer of this thin stuff to define the edges and then mask over the top with a wider size to prevent the edges lifting. Tamiya also makes thin masking tape for curved surfaces but I have not used it. Keep going, you are nearly there, cheers, Pappy
  3. G'day Soctt, I don't doubt you but I have seen pics of the F-4E (AUP)'s with the older style tank as well. If I had an F-15 style tank I would use it instead but unfortunately the original centreline tank is all I have, cheers, Pappy
  4. G'day Andrew, Thanks mate. I just use super glue, the cheaper the better. I usually buy the twin pack stuff from Woolies. I do find that the CA tends to oxidise quickly and goes from a very thin water like consistency to very viscous syrup like goo over the course of a couple of weeks. G'day people, A little more work on the undercarriage today, I also made a start on the stores, cheers, Pappy
  5. G'day people, I managed to do a little work on the undercarriage today, mainly just adding some hydraulic lines using lead wire and some other details, cheers, Pappy
  6. G'day people, I was wondering what to do about the cockpit sidewalls. The cockpit tub has some really nice details and can look very good with a few minor tweaks and a sharp paint job, but the sidewalls are a little bare by comparison to the real thing which has a lot going on in this area. I remembered that several years ago one of eh vendors at our annual model show was selling off a whole bunch of resin cockpit seconds. these were incomplete sets, flawed castings etc, and he was asking 20c each. I grabbed a handful of this stuff and have slowly been using it here and there. I was going thr
  7. G'day Andrew, What did you use to thin the Lifecolour paints? I can get these and I usually brush them. I tried spraying some once, they clogged the airbrush. I thinned with water only. They were also a pain to clean out of the airbrush being water based. G'day Tobik, That was a great link, I shall have to experiment with some mixes, cheers, Pappy
  8. G'day Brutus, Thanks very much. G'day people, The two instruments panels got a lick of paint and the details were picked out with a fine brush Test fitted to see how they will look in place Not too shabby, cheers, Pappy
  9. G'day Tobik, Thanks for taking teh time to reply. Unfortunately, it seems that you are correct, no Gunze FS36251 :( I am not really keen to buy paints from overseas as Australia Post has 'issues' with transporting enamel paints, and I don't think that Xtracolour paints are widely available in Oz.I also just checked Hannants, and these colours are currently out of stock cheers, Pappy

  11. Scott, George and Andrew, thanks very much, that is a great help. I think I will stick with Gunze paints, I have them, and I know how to spray these. I have attempted to spray Xtracolour and Lifecolour paints previously withonlt mixed results, so in this case, better the devil you know.... cheers, Pappy
  12. Thanks Andrew, G'day people, Having finished cleaning up the wing and fuselage parts, the tub started to get some love at last The AUP's most notable external differences are found in the cockpits. The front and rear instrument panels are very different as they both feature MFD's, one for the front panel and two for the rear. The remaining analogue guages are also re-arranged. I cheated a bit and used a resin panel designed to represent the F-4EJ "Kai" as this only needed a slight modification. The rear panel will require much more work. I began by removing the upper portion as this se
  13. G'day people, I have a few questions regarding the HAF F-4E (AUP) colours. Firstly does anyone have a colour drawing for the F-4E Ghost scheme? What colour is painted inside the intakes, I assume it is the darkest of the three colours? What colour are the inner stores pylons painted? The missile rails (Aero 3B's) are white but what about the wing pylons? What colour is the interior of the airbrake wells? I am thinking white like the gear bays. cheers, Pappy
  14. Thanks jochemp, G'day people, I have shifted my focus to the back end. The kit exhausts feature nice turbine face details but otherwise the inside of the exhausts are a little plain. I have added a little PE goodness to improve this area. I will add the PE spray rings after the interiors have been painted up. The kit exhausts are also a little short and lack the corrugated linings of the real items, however I can live with this. There are better resin replacement items available, however I am happy with my results as they are a compromise between absolute detail and cost. The details o
  15. G'day people, Well, after taking a saw and files to the intake area, it was time to see if teh resin replacements would play nice with the rest of the kit, Fit seems not too shabby! One other modification that I added to the fuselage was to cut out the small panel on top of the nose. This panel is part of the gun gas venting system and is always open when the jet is on the deck Meanwhile, the wing is together and the seams have been cleaned up A few bits of PE for the main wheel bays Finally, I started work on the inner pylons. Curiously, these feature (restrained) raised
  16. Cheers Andrew, G'day people, A little more prep work. The rear fairing aft of the cockpit includes two small antennas, these were cut off and the part smoothed off, At the front end, more antennas were removed and a panel is inserted on the right side. I think these are associated with the F-4G version. Meanwhile, I decided to fit some full length resin intakes, but the fuselage halves will need some preparation first,as the kit supplies a truncated intake only Even though I bought the kit cheap, I always find it a bit scary when you first decide to hack into a kit. This is what
  17. Yup! I swapped outa pair from an F-4E kit Cheers, it is a good thing I have a great reference book! cheers, Pappy
  18. G'day people, I would like to play as well! I managed to pick up this last week at our annual second hand kit sale. As I bought the kit pretty cheap, I can spend the $$$ I saved on some other goodies like resin seats and intakes. The start pic The first job was the unpleasant task of removing all the extra airframe lumps and bumps that are not required. My biggest gripe with the Hasegawa Phantom 'family' is the requirement to remove these bumps. I wish Hasegawa had simply added these bits as separate panels or add on details with flashed over holes as it is the most time consuming pa
  19. G'day YB 78. I was impressed as well, and from Airfix no less! These new generation Airfix kits are great, excellent value for money and great detail and engineering. A few years ago I was a dyed in the wool Airfix hater, most of their kits had poor detail and rubbish decals. Hornby have really turned them around. Thanks very much. G'day people, Only a little progress this weekend, I managed to get the crew painted up. I only noticed after the paint went on that one of the crew does not seem to have a fully moulded face! Hopefully this will not be too no
  20. True, but i guess that is why we have WIP's :P I have managed to get the fuselage buttoned up. I noticed that Airfix have these weird projections on top of the wings I am guessing that these are supposed to represent the undercarriage down-lock indicators? I cut these off and drilled a small hole that I will add the indicator to when all the painting is done The main gear bays had a little PE added The upper cockpit deck seems to have been painted in the same interior green as the rest of the cockpit, so I have added small bits of packing foam to act as masks, cheers, Pappy
  21. The interior of the bay was zinc chromate green, the colour of the inside of the skid could be the same or gloss white, cheers, Pappy
  22. Thanks Martin. G'day people, A little more progress today, I got the donk painted up, Much of this little gem cannot be seen with the engine cowl fitted. Airfix provides two cowl options,as separate parts are provided to allow the builder to choose cooling fins open or closed. My kit will be in flight, so I have chosen the closed option but it is nice to know that the option is there, cheers, Pappy
  23. G'day people, I only stumbled across this build after I had started my kit. I asked Vince if I was okay to join in and he has given me the green light. Well, this is what I am building, It is a relatively recent kit by Airfix and in common with the new Airfix kits, the fit is very precise and the interior detail is impressive OOB, but I decided to add a little PE as well. I had already started the cockpit, so here is what I have already done, ,, cheers, Pappy
