  4. I have great memories of Griffiss. I grew up in Syracuse and my dad was a high school guidance counselor. They invited him up for a visit to help with recruiting and he took me along as a 12 year old. I got to go up in the tower and watch Sixes from the 49th FIS land and -52's take off. I talked with a -106 pilot and toured the hangars. If only I had a good camera! A few years later, as a member of a Boy Scout Explorer post, we got a ride in a KC-135 out of Griffiss and refueled B-52's. It was a thrill of a lifetime for a teenager. Thanks for the bringing back those memories. It was a sad day
  5. What a sad, sad day. It's been a hard week for our hobby. First Bill Koster, and now Mark Bilas. He was a great guy and I was glad to have known him.
  6. This right here. I do that with my weathering as well. I paint it nice and clean (no marbling or blackbasing or preshading) and then make it nice and dirty and add corrosion control. I finished the scheme in question not long ago with the Monogram kit. 1/48 Monogram VF-102
  7. I found a copy of the instructions online. It's actually a THREE tone scheme, but non-standard VF-102 instruction sheet
  8. Which decal sheet are you using? I built a Diamondbacks jet a bit ago using the Fightertown sheet, and it calls for a two tone scheme of Dark Ghost on top and Light Ghost undersides. It also has non-standard Dark Ghost along the intakes.

  12. It is a very detailed kit, and can be built into a gorgeous looking model. Be prepared, though, for a fiddly build. It's only slightly less fiddly than the Hasegawa kit. With that said, it's not unbuildable.
  13. in the words of Amadeus, "Well, there it is!" Proof that at least on one occasion there was an F-4J where it wasn't supposed to be. It's fun to watch people react to things like that. When I backdated the Tamiya Enterprise to the '76 cruise, I put one Tomcat in Heater-Ferris markings, because both VF-1 and VF-2 had one each painted up. I overheard someone looking at the model commenting how they wouldn't have had a camouflaged Air Force jet on board a Navy carrier. 😂
  14. Thanks for asking. This was the exact question I was wondering about as well as I'm on my last bottle of MM Burnt Metal. Here's a second question. Which of the above mentioned paints can also be brush painted? I loved MM Metalizers because you could brush small parts.

  17. They are just colored vinyl with no texture. However, you can use the walkway mask set to good effect by putting the outline in place and dabbing Mr. Surfacer (or any other liquid primer) inside it. As the primer sets up, use a small stiff paint brush to stipple in texture. It works great.
  18. -142 and -143 (in CVW-8) came off their Phantom cruise in Aug. '74 and began transition to the Tomcat. CVW-6, with -41 and -84 aboard flying Phantoms, went on cruise during the first half of '75. They were going to start transition sometime after they got back from that cruise. In 1976, both CVW-6 and CVW-8 were slated for cruises. CVW-6 was in March aboard the America and CVW-8 was in July aboard the Nimitz. Somewhere the decision was made to swap the fighter squadrons in both airwings. -142 and -143 went to CVW-6 and -41 and -84 went to CVW-8. I don't know if that gave -41 and -84 more time
  19. Take a look to the left of the VF-142 F-14. See what that is? It's a VF-84 F-4 Phantom. Now I'm really curious why -142 and -143 didn't join CVW-8. I think I'm going to go over to the F-14 Tomcat Association page and ask if anyone has a solid reason for the switch.
  20. Thanks! It was time to move on, though. PHR is an example of why. Everything is going to CAD design with 3D printing of at the very least the masters to be cast. I, with my marginal scratchbuilding skills and NO desire to conquer the learning curve of CAD, realized my time had come. It was a good run, though.
