  1. my phellow phantom phanatics-

I am wondering how I can update my AMT/ERTLE 1:48 F-4D to reflect a circa 80's(mid 80's to be exact) aircraft in the Hill II scheme. Now the reason I ask is because the kit I have has the undernose fairing for the IR pod, however, it is just the 'slick' stout, which, per the photos I have seen of later D's has bulges/blisters on the either side of the pod, and also takes on a small square look at the end. What correction can be made, and if this is not possible, what kit available should I use to represent the build I am interested in-Hasegawa maybe :crying:

  2. Fellow B-ONE fans-

This is a idea which came to me while at work-shows what I'm really doing during company time  In any event, I have experienced this obstacle previously, and have heard it voiced by fellow builders here on ARC, with regard to the glove vane mechanism for the wings on the B-1. In the past, I have used foil to duplicate the rubber looking glove cover for the wing retraction component, however, while working on something here in the office I hatched an idea! Again, this is just a theory, but this simple item may be used to provide for a close resembling of the rubber glove vane, and that is to use white correction tape! This stuff often lays down smooth and for the most part is sturdy, yet if pulled/manipulated, takes on the rubber look. A little super glue or CA, and it should look the part. Another plus is that it obviously is white, as the gloves are, and should be able to be weathered by using our normal means to make it even appear grayish. I am also positive that it may be able to be drawn on with a fine pencil to mimick the sections as the actual gloves have. I have yet to personally try this, as I am still waiting to here back on the availability of a BONE kit I spied, however I will try this next time. Now this may only work for 1/72nd scale BONE's, but with a little skill, it may also work fine for a 1/48 B-1B. :)

  3. I've purchased the panel scriber from Bare-metalfoil.com, and this is my first use of the scriber on my F-16C, and it was relatively easy to use, yet very effective in that is removes a small squiggly of plastic on each pass. Couple this with a ruler, and you pretty much can stay on target. Now in terms of contours, that requires some more steady work and concentration, but the scriber has worked well for me, and it only cost $10 bucks through their website :)

  4. Fellow ARCer's, I was wondering if anyone made 1: 72 scale decals for BONE's of the 34th BS while they were stationed at Mt. Home AFB. I am interested in building serial '138,' and am wondering if there are decals available for these jets, or if someone could hook me up with some custom decals :cop: , that would be even better.

    Regards,

    ted

  5. IMO the one thing that may be a pro( or a con for the matter by some) with Italeri, is the "softness" of the plastic, especially when sanding or kitbashing as I did with the F-16C. Re-scribing was also relatively painless.

  6. ohh man chris, that maiden flight thing sounds too damn funny  You have me nervous now because I am getting a BB cockpit for my F-4D  Hopefully you can get the damn thing to fit in your F-4J-guess I have to get the sandpaper, filler, .45 and six pack ready to go as this will be my first attempt at the BB pit too :beer4:

  7. I guess I am too old school too, as I have and continue to use the red-tube testors cement  Again, just as others have commented, it is used alongside a CA and crazy glue, though, never by itself, but I like it, and I guess I am too hardheaded to recognize its downsides-my mom always said I was hardheaded ;)

  8. thanks scalmodlr svaz for the insight. I am in maryland, so I have to deal with high humidity and the such, however, I've been precarious as to whether I should go that route, or just continue as I have been with paint straight from the bottle. I guess I experiment as you said on this Blk 30, either way, it should turn out fine-especially with the sribing work put into. Thanx again

  9. -ditto here on you being one luck guy jake, damn that looked like fun  Good shots too man-keep em coming. I be hoping and wishing for some Spangy jets or any USAFE jets to cross the pond and stay overnight at McGuire, but I've never caught any there-funny too, as their transient ramp is always empty whenever I walk out to it.

  10. Guys, I have been reading varying opinions with regard to thinning acrylic paints, so my question is, will thinning them with rubbing alcohol for instance, give me that consistency of a smooth paint job? I tend to work back and forth with MM and Tamiya acrylics-the latter more often due to faster cure. I am at the painting stages of my Block 30(just a little more scribing to do), and I know it's a simply paint job of gunship and nuetral greys, so in an effort to ensure a smooth paint job, I was wondering if I should thin they respective greys, or should I use them straight out the bottle? Any suggestions guys :bandhead2:

  11. I think Mungo1974 and Habu2 can answer this one as far as specs and tecs go, but I know in terms of outward appearances they look the same-although the Block 50 has the IPE GE-F110, and also flies with the ASQ-213 HTS pod on the port intake, but externally there is little difference, the discernment being internally with beefed up APG-68 and other software.

  12. Hey Gary, I know you can add to this. Right now, the Hasegawa Block 50 CJ kits are the only offerings which provide the optional MCID intake and correct GE-110 for an accurate 'big-mouth' jet. I am presently working on an Italeri F-16C which was kit based with parts from a Hasegawa CJ kit to arrive at the Block 30 F-16C I am doing up in the 466th FS "HI" markings. But again, the Hasegawa CJ kits are the only kits that offer the MCIDs and GEs, unless, correct me if I am wrong Gary, you go with a seamless sucker combo. Your thoughts Mungo1974

  13. Hey VF-x, it looks like Flightdecs has two Cutting Edge sheets-BONE's Part 2 and 3(I actually have 3, which as you suggested, doesn't have all the stenciling-simply squadron markings and warning arrows.) Part 2 even has markings for two SAC birds. A check of squadron.com also found Fox One decals available-I am not sure if they come with stenciling either-although they do have a separate sheet for early BONE stenciling. Let me look into a few other references VF-x-keep me posted

  14. hey EF, those Mt. Home markings are off da wall :worship: Are they in 1/72nd scale, because I would love to have a sheet if you could provide it to me. The jet I acutally saw in person was '138,' so let me know if you can add that serial on the sheet if infact you can provide me with the decals-I love those man

  15. Thanx for the welcome Vindicator One  My pleasure to be onboard-I guess its safe to say I am at home with BONE basketcases as myself  Oh, and as you guessed it, the Airfix kit does come with cruise missles, but they are incorporated in the bombay-no accuracy whatsoever, so I closed my up. Also, the tooling of the kit is far off. The nose is too pointy, the cockpit is plain awful, and there are a few other gripes, but if a little time is invested in the build, it will in the end look like a B-1B-I had planned on adding the CE featherless cans, but I concluded that the kit was not deserving. Lastly, in response to VF-x-you'll hear this throughout this forum, but twobobs makes a great sheet complete with warning arrows, and the like-Cutting Edge also makes a sheet with those markings as well. BONE'S FOREVER GENTLEMEN :P

  16. Hot stuff fella's-this is big business! Let me add my $.02 caveat, stay FAR away from the 1/72nd B-1B by Airfix. I am planning on arriving at some closure with the new build of the monogram B-1B I am purchasing-after that Airfix nightmare  I too am interested in doing a BONE in the markings of the Mt. Home AFB based 34 BS-as I was fortunate enough to catch one far from it's home at Andrews AFB's open house a couple of years back. I have a few walkarounds of that jet on my camcorder, but I would like to know if anybody does the decals

  17. yup doctorpepper that's the kit! Having said that, you have given me renewed belief in the kit because I was doubtful at second thought after having read a lot of bad reviews with regard to Testor/Italeri kits. My intentions are to build the kit as a F/A-18B with the very markings you are interested in doing doctorpepper-VFC-12 in the desert brown-although this jet (#14) may now be in the two-toned grey scheme now being applied to the Omars jets. Well, I'll take your word for it that the kit is pretty decent. :D Thanks once again

  18. Okay fella's I have a similar question with regard to the available F/A-18 kits. I have the testors 1:48 scale kit, and surprisingly, it has the options to do a two-seat B or single seat Alpha. In any event, I planned on doing mine up as a VFC-12 Fighting Omars jet too-have to find the decals first :worship: But I would like to know if this kit is accurate in terms of shape i.e., fuselage looks F-18 once done, landing gear have appropriate look to em, etc. In simple words, will it look F-18ish once assembled, because I sure would hate to waste a set of twobobs on a kit that do no justice for the markings. Any thoughs
