  1. Hello all,

I have an original issue Monogram 1/72 Space Shuttle kit that I am trying to restore. It was found in a terrible state of neglect at a garage sale. It was slightly started but nothing that I can't fix with elbow grease...except for perhaps the kit decals...they may be an issue.

Anyways, the only part(s) missing are the main canopy glass (parts 91 and 92). I have looked for aftermarket canopy glass but cannot find any anywhere. I was wondering if someone out there had the canopy glass from a previous Monogram  kit that they have done? Perhaps you used aftermarket glass or one of the late "Duty Cat's" whole new cockpit section and your kit glass is laying around somewhere? Or perhaps you have a bone yard Shuttle that has its glass? Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated!

    Regards,

    Don

Always wanted to find a good series of novels like it. Is it a political thriller as well Don?

Oh boy, where to begin without being a spoiler. Lets just say the whole series of books has a little bit of everything in it. In no particular order and going from memory, politics, terrorism, oil, corrupt billionaires, drug lords/cartels, stolen weapons from Russia/former eastern block nations, black ops, Russian leaders longing for the good old days... think Hunt for Red October meets Clear and Present Danger add a smattering of The Sum of All Fears, sprinkle in Red Storm Rising, and a dose of the movie  "Act of Valor". I think that about covers the series without giving anything away LOL! The nice thing is the baddies are from all over the world not just the usual suspects (although they are there).

    Does that help/make sense?

    Happy modeling!

  3. I liked the Ghost Recon series of books by David Michaels (books in order from 1-3):

Amazon.com: Ghost Recon (Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Book 1 ...

Combat Ops (Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Book 2) by David Michaels ...

    Amazon.com: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Choke Point (9780425264751 ...

If you liked The Hunt for Red October, then check out the "Hunter Killer" series by George Wallace and Don Keith (Final Bearing is book 1:

Amazon.com: Dangerous Grounds (The Hunter Killer Series Book 2 ...

Loved the books! I believe there was a movie loosely based on the series.

I have a few others but I won't hog  LOL!

next up is the Takom AK-130 naval gun

1/16! Now that's just way too awesome:thumbsup:. I love my 1/35 but I must admit 1/16 interests me. Panzer I looks great. I love the German scout/light tanks like the Panzer I, II, and later the III. I have an ICM 1/35 Luchs that's been calling to me. The Type 94 Tankette's  look great too! I have always liked the yellow, green, red brown Japanese camouflage. Is that a Chinese copy I see on the left in the photo? Good stuff thanks for sharing!

    Happy modeling!

EDIT: I now have the urge to play World of Tanks...one of my other hobbies...:woot.gif:

Hey a fellow Model Railroader! N Scale myself but I have been collecting some HO materials over the last long while (my eyes are not what they used to be so I am anticipating the inevitable switch). My layout is loosely based on the Conrail Appalachian routes...coal country. I run mainly 1980's-2000 diesels like SD40-2's, Geeps, SD70's, but I do have an AMTRACK and "Tourist Train" Super Chief (I LOVE the Warbonet paint scheme). Haven't run any trans in a while though as I've been busy and having fun model building.

    Good stuff! Thanks for sharing!

    Happy modeling all!

Yep, in fact it's enabled me to build in record time.

Began this beast in late February.  Never dreamed I'd finish so fast, as complicated as it was and with all the scratchbuilding involved.

Sweet! Dukes of Hazard was my go-to TV show back in the day. Loved the General Lee. Daisy was easy on the eyes too . Nice build, really looks the part. Thanks for sharing!

    Hey Don, great topic!

Heck yeah, I've been building! I finished Monogram's F-84F Thunderstreak, I'm finishing up Tamiya's Mk. Vb, and I'm in the middle of Hasegawa's A-4E. I'm a teacher, and my district's already decided to close campuses for the rest of the year. That means I'll have plenty of more time for building. After the Spitfire, I'm not sure what I'll be starting. I'm planning on having a couple of builds going at the same time.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else is building. Everyone stay clean, stay healthy, and stay indoors!

    Cheers!

    -O

That's awesome! The Tamiya Spit sure is a beauty of a kit huh. I built the Hasegawa Scooter years ago and loved it. Good luck and thanks for sharing!

    Happy modeling all!

  9. Hey all! What is everyone building while being in isolation? I shut the news off, avoid threads dealing with the doom and gloom, and I am flying through the builds and really putting  my lockdown time to good use. I feel like a kid again, just building straight OOB and just having fun. Added to that my 11 year old Son has joined me and we've been having a blast! I wish I could post some pictures but since Photo Bucket did their thing I haven't found an easy site to post pictures from (recommendations for an easy hassle free means is greatly appreciated). Anyways, here is what I have accomplished in the last three weeks (this is A LOT for me...for ARC's very own speedy builder Phantom not so much...for me its A LOT LOL!):

    1) Tamiya 1/35 Kubelwagen original issue almost completely done. Just need decals and light weathering. Searching for adequate figures.

    2) Tamiya 1/35 T-34/85 almost done, just need decals and light weathering. No figures.

    3) Tamiya 1/35 StuG IV original issue main camouflage painted, needs stowage/pioneer tools painted, gloss, decals, light weathering, figure to be painted.

    4) Tamiya 1/35 Merkava Mk. 1 original issue about to spray main camouflage. Figure needs to be assembled.

    5) Lindberg 1/35 T-55 ready for primer (rough kit though). Pressed into service Dragon T-72 tank commander from spares needs painting.

    About to start:

    A) Tamiya 1/35 original issue British Universal Carrier.

    Possibly:

    B) Tamiya M2 Bradley. I want to do the 80's four color camouflage  (black/tan/green/white?) if I can get up the courage.

My Son has built 2 1/72 Tiger I's, and is almost done a 1/35 Walker Bulldog. He's also built three COBI Tanks, one COBI Spitfire, and has just started working on a COBI C-47 Skytrain.

So, what are you all building? Maybe this can be an unofficial ARC Isolation GB thread. Just post whatever you're working on no matter what or at what stage. Consider this a feel good modeling thread. No doom, no gloom, no stress...just modeling in isolation.

    Happy modeling all!

  10. ^^^Agreed. Beutepanzers have always interested me, especially for modeling subjects. I have a 1/35 Trumpeter KV-1 that is earmarked for these German markings:

Well how about that... - General Discussion - Official Forum ...

An eye popping overall white with black balkenkreuz and black stripe around the turret. Sherman's, Matilda's, Churchill's, French tanks, Czech tanks...so many trophy tanks in German hands. Add to that German tanks pressed into Allied service and a modeler has a lot of subjects to choose from.

Another oddity on my "to do list" someday is the Japanese Tiger I tank bought by Japan, along with technical plans, but never delivered:

    Someday...

  11. Kind of related,  when the Canadian army was deployed to Afghanistan in 2001 it did so without any heavy armor, namely its Leopard C2 tanks. The Leopards were deemed irrelevant and obsolete on the modern battlefield by top brass in the Canadian army and were slowly being mothballed, sold, turned into memorials, sent to museums etc. However, by late 2005 early 2006 Canadian army commanders in theatre began asking for heavy armor to support the infantry on sweeps/patrols and guard bases. Luckily, there was a sufficient number of C2's and trained crews still in service that could be sent and upgraded:

    À1920px-Leopard_C2_Canadian_Forces.jpg

They had an immediate positive impact on the ground. So great were they received that the Canadian government sought to procure any available newer model Leopards. They ended up leasing/buying Leopard 2A6M's from Germany (surplus tanks):

    Leopard 2A6M CAN Tank

Again, well received by crews and those on the ground. As of June 2019 the Canadian army is looking to upgrade its current Leopards and possibly move into the Leopard 2A7/8 in the distant future and maintain them into 2050ish. Relevance...I only mention this because had the Canadian army not had even that small cadre of Leopards and crews back in 2005/2006, obviously there would have been nothing to send the infantry back then, but odds are they wouldn't have any heavy armor at all right now. As others have pointed out, once you lose something its hard to get it back.

    Nice discussion all.

    Happy modeling!

EDIT: no idea why my last paragraph suddenly turned blue and underlined itself. Oh well...

Interesting...  I might have to check that book out.  On a related note, this site has probably the best summary of Soviet tank / APC info on the web.   I'm currently reading their report on the T-54 on my lunch breaks.   Great details, lots of pictures and very good info on the technical development of each of the vehicles they showcase.

Cool! I'm off to check that site out now. Always good to have more resources.

    Thanks!

@Don I would be interested in reading a memoir or story of a Soviet tank crew on T-55's or 72's during the height of the Cold War. Any recommendations?

Oh I wish there were some! There may be first hand accounts of T-54/55 crews as well as T-62, T-64, T-72, T-80 but nothing in the English language that I've found. There are many excellent design/tech references out there on these types, but nothing memoir like. I do recommend this book written by a fellow modeler if you ever choose to learn more about the T-55 (there is a companion book for the T-54 also recommended):

Soviet T-55 Main Battle Tank by James Kinnear

Great book, not overly technical, great photos. You will walk away knowing a great deal about the most produced tank type in history (90,000-100,000 produced and still used). Sorry I couldn't be more help.

    Happy reading and modeling!

  14. So I've been working on a 1/35 T-34/85 and watching documentaries on the type while at the bench. I came cross this YouTube video and was fascinated!

I've read so much on the Normandy campaign and yet never heard of this before. Oh it was well known that German units used captured Soviet tanks on the eastern front (and vice versa), and captured western allied tanks in the west (and vice versa in the Panther Cuckoo). But I had never heard of captured T-34's being used in Normandy. Interesting to say the least!

    Enjoy and happy modeling!
