  1. I also plan to use a Matchbox kit as the first prototype but having built it before, and the Airfix kit too, I'm wondering if the workload to bring it up to a common display standard of my more recent kits is too big. I'm seriously considering scratchbuilding the prototype wing gloves on a Hasegawa early kit using the Matchbox kit as a guide. Or maybe a new tool Academy one, haven't seen one yet. If you use the Airfix kit it really needs replacing the fins, burner cans and main undercarriage (or at least wheels).

  2. Hi all,

Dutch, that info is exactly what I was looking for.  Many many thanks.

Yes, the S-61N will be the Whirlybits conversion with Revell parts. And from Rod D, that means I can use the CH-3 VIP kit for the SH-3G. Yay! Am I correct in thinking the SH-3G is effectively the same airframe as the H? (My plan was the Airfix SH3D kit for the G).

As for the Airfix kits, Hajo and Rod, well I have them so might as well use them. I can always use leftover bits from the Revell kits to dress them up. Besides, the SH-3D is a very early release so is crisply moulded. The HAR.3 not so much, but I originally bought that to use for the S-61 project.

    Thanks again.

  3. Hi all, I've finally got HS-9 decals from HAD on the way for my Nimitz collection which I intend to put on my Fujimi kit of the SH-3H. I'm assuming this kit will have all I need for a Sea Griffin's bird.

However, I also have an old Superscale sheet 72-391 that has a Nimitz based SH-3G from HC-2. I'm not totally up on what the differences are between marks but I do have the following kits in the stash to mix and match from: the VIP issue of the Fujimi kit (no mark given, just SH-3), the old tool Airfix SH-3D, the old tool Airfix HAR.3 and two copies of the Revell HAS.6/AEW.

One of the Revell is earmarked for a S-61N conversion, and I also want to build one of the early HAS.1 or 2 from HMS Ark Royal in the '70s. I was thinking of the old Airfix for that but open to suggestions...

  4. Hey folks. Just a public service announcement.
I ordered some model aftermarket items from a shop in Ukraine. I found the link to the items and shop on scalemates.
Mostly stuff that wasn't available elsewhere and a few vac canopies that are, just to fill the pack. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to arrive with all that is happening. I also figured if it didn't, at least the guy would have a few euros to use as he saw fit. I certainly felt he had higher priorities than filling my order for bits for (what are effectively toy) planes.

To my surprise, the package landed safe and sound at my door today, despite Irish customs best efforts to intercept (and open) the package.

    Delighted for 2 reasons,
1 I have nice detail items for my planned B-1 build,
2 more importantly this may be a sign that life (in some parts at least) in Ukraine may actually be returning to something approaching normal. I can only hope...
And if you see something you like from a Ukraine based shop, especially hobby.dn.ua, take a chance. I'm glad I did.

  5. Wish I was there....

Ah well, we also have a decent tribute band in Ireland too (Breathe) that I've been lucky enough to see a couple of times pre-pandemic. Agreed better to have a decent tribute re-creating the live sound than a karaoke band or worse not being able to experience that live sound ever again.

At least I get to go see Munster Rugby live tonight so still all good.

  6. I've looked at this over the years  and looking at the link above my own interpretation is that the blue hue is partly from sky reflection. If you look at the Ferocious Frankie pic you can also see the remnants of the black stripes above the fuse Star/n/bar. So another probable source of the difference in finish is the "scrubbing off" of the invasion stripes and the remnants of the old olive drab that was under the stripes, add in weathering to OD before stripes painted and after they were removed. And the scrubbing effect on the finish.
