  1. Update.... went to disassemble the compressor again to try to remove the remains of the connector fitting and it snapped at the other side. The fittings might as well be butter. The tank is seriously corroded and not worth repairing.

I've decided not to replace the tank but to take the whole lot to the recycling centre. I'll use my original unbadged Sprint Jet as backup until i splash on a new setup. Birthday coming up, was planning on a H&S airbrush but compressor is priority now

Looking at either the Sparmax TC-610/620 setup, the Revell master or the Iwata power jet pro. Any advice on these appreciated. If they are junk with badges, that would be appreciated too.

  2. Evening all.

Many years ago when ARC was young and Tomcats still had over 3/4 of a decade of US service left to do I moved into airbrushing properly. An Aztek 430 and an unbadged version of an iwata smart/sprint jet. Happy out for years.

About 5 years back I upgraded to a Badger BA1100 with a tank. Great to have to not running constantly but it is noisy compared to the old one.

Anyway, recently I noted it was running a lot and not holding pressure in the tank (unrunning) for more than 10 mins. When disassembling to put ptfe tape on all the joints one actually snapped. The fitting for the inlet into the actual tank is the one that's gone. Grrr...

I gather the compressor is actually a Chinese special with Badger stickers splashed on it. I'm thinking the whole tank could do with replacing but a whole replacement compressor can come off the shelf of the LMS for €150. But debating on adding another ton to go more upmarket. Ideas?

In the meantime can a tank be added to my unbranded smart jet? If so, which one? The auto shut off on that has me confused.

Or am I better splashing out on a sparmax or something else?

The broken fitting is the top middle in this photo, where the long tube screws into the tank.

  3. Your welcome. I've a long term model project of a collection of CVW-8 and visitors to Nimitz from trials/ commissioning in 1975 to  transfer to Pacific in 1987. (I've a few from later but had to draw the line somewhere).

It was interesting that the same air wing had such stability with some squadrons (VA-82 & 86) and not with others (5 different Prowler sqds). There are also examples of individual aircraft serving with more than one squadron. RA-5C 156624 was with RVAH-9 one one cruise, and after they were disbanded she was back on Nimitz for the next cruise with RVAH-6. Likewise EA-6B 159910 was with VAQ-135 and later crashed with VMAQ-2.

At least 5 different colour schemes for VF-41 and 6 or more for VF-84. And that's before you add in visitors like our famous NATC F-4S, 2 identified FG.1s, a pair of French Navy F-8s, various nationalities helos. Add in the test and training aircraft (early F-8s and prototype Tomcat) and that's a large collection.

    I'd better make a start.

  4. 20220121_150052.thumb.jpg.e4724b5c45354b6a70f008e9dbd414df.jpgLater the first operational cruise was all Phantoms, VF-31 (still marked AC-1xx and carrying USS Saratoga titles) and VMFA-333  AJ-12x USS Nimitz.

Next cruise was VMFA AJ-1xx and VF-74 AJ-2xx.

Then the F-14s took over, VF-41 & 84 high vis. Of note here was the S-3s had big AJ in red, next cruise was small AJ in black same as VA-86 AJ.

By time of Final Countdown, VF-41 were overall grey, still full colour Nat insignia but no other colour. VF-84 were still high vis BUT the upper flaps and tailplanes were now gull grey (bottom still white). There are a couple of shots in the film of the NATC Phantom ( J or S? I can't tell). And a NATC A-7e as well. Starfighter decals do these both in the ship scales and HAD are planning them as future releases. I have a photo from an S3 on approach to Nimitz showing both on the deck with the rest of CVW-8 including 41/84.

  5. 5Late to this thread, but can add some clarity.

Nimitz 1st cruise book has photos of sea trials, deck trials and early shakedown cruise. There are photos of VF-142 (AJ) and VF-143 (unk) with VMFA-333(AJ/USS NIMITZ) in same shot. Ea-6bs, A-7s and E-2 with AJ/Nimitz, S-3 & RA-5 (AC). A-7 NATC & F-14 (development/prototypes). Even RN F-4K/FG.1s from Ark Royal.

  6. I really like that. I must add a yank-tank land-yacht to my scale garage. If for no other reason to show it next to some of my Euro econoboxes.

I did a commission conversion of a 1/43 Pontiac Grand AM resin model. A 2 door coupe. When I put it next to a 1/43 diecast model of my own Audi A4 Avant I realised the real thing probably wouldn't fit in my drive.

  7. That's a sweet haul.

They'd all look great on my Scalextric layout (whenever I get that built....)

They are of their time but are still nice kits and still make sweet models. It never ceases to amaze me that Matchbox were able to make clean crisp moulded parts with TEENY TINY sprue attachment points 40-50 years ago, and few can come close today.

  8. Long (and true) story...

Thanks to Wardog on here I finally track down a copy of the Heller (actually a Fennec, but close enough for me) T-28 kit, after years of searching. Plan is to do a grey/white VNAF bird from Wolfpak decals 72-40 "Light my Fire". Serial 140038 from Na Trang 1962.

Then as is typical with these things, I find a new issue kit in the LMS a week later.

Ok says I, as the new kit doesn't have VNAF decals that will get the spare ones, with the funky sharksmouth from the other kit.

Wolfpak quote FS16473 for the grey/white scheme while Heller say overall humbrol 166, a BS standard light aircraft grey which is very close to 16440 Light Gull Gray for the kit scheme of TL371.

The old Carpena 72.07 sheet "Indochine" has the same 140038 option as the Wolfpak sheet but quotes 36440 overall. This is clearly wrong as I've found an air-air photo showing it as grey/white. So I figure if that's wrong then probably the FS call out is too. The sheet and research is over 25 years old. Wheras Wolfpak are highly regarded for research. Well I've got FS16473 in an Xtracolour enamel tin so on I rock. Painting finished and all Wolfpak decals on the model of 140038.

Less than a day later I discover AOA Decals have a 1/32 sheet that includes both 140038 and TL371. 140038 should be Gull Grey/white.

    TL371 should be overall FS36473

I've got them the wrong way around.

    AAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!

Lesson; don't do more research, especially after adding decals.

  9. I love ARC still after all these years and a few years away but also am on model related pages on fakebook. However im getting more turned off FB every time i go on there. I've lost all interest in Britmodeller since Brexit, mostly due to being suspended for trying to call out Brexit related untruths (or alternative facts if you prefer). I've noticed the fall in traffic on other favourite sites/forums too (modelwarships, F1M, Carrierbuilders, Modelingmadness etc) but i do find I'm spending more time on Scalemates. I'm also interacting more there as i can post photos directly from phone and PC, something i cant do elsewhere.
