    Mig 21 Question

Kotey is right, early MiG-21s (the ones with a one piece canopy) had a different seat. Assuming we are talking about 1/72, the SK-1 is available in white metal from Aeroclub and according to Linden Hill Imports Website it's also available from the Czech "AV". Dunno however if these are white metal or resin. I got some Il-28 seats from AV some time ago and they were nice. There's also a resin detail set from IPMS Germany for the Revell MiG-21F-13 that has also a resin SK-1 but I wouldn't buy the whole set only for the seat (most of the other parts can't be used on a PF). My 2 cents. Yuri
  2. Sorry for the little off-topic, but I'm sure the moderators will agree, if they ever had to assemble something bought at Ikea... As told by an italian comic: Some weeks ago Mr. Ikea went to Naples to attend the opening of a new Ikea store. That evening they brought him to one of the best Naples' pizza-restaurants and they introduced him to the "piazzaiolo" (the guy who makes pizza, dunno the english word). The "pizzaiolo" said, you are Mr. Ikea and you'd like a pizza? Ok, look there: that's the flour, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, here you are! Yuri
  3. Neomega makes (or at least made) a resin set to convert a Su-15TM into a Flagon-A (new nosecone, wings and engine cooling intakes plus the seat and a vacform canopy) that was designed for the VES kit, but should fit to the A-Model as well (maybe with some tweaking). I have both kits and the conversion set, but haven't tested the how they fit. Yuri
  4. In fact I want to make one of the Soviet/Russian Mi-17 that was in east germany. All the picture I saw show "winch equipped" Hips, so I'll have to scratchbuild one. Thanks to both for the info Yuri P.S. Hey Mandrake, I'm gonna get your money for ya. But if you don't get the President of the United States on that phone, you know what's gonna happen to you? You're gonna have to answer to the Coca-Cola company. :) (Here they aired Dr. Strangelove for the 1000th time just a couple of weeks ago)
  5. I got the Zvezda 1/72 Mil Mi-17 (the military version) and it doesn't have the winch on top of the side door. However all Mi-17 I saw seem to sport a winch, but Zvezda puts it only in the SAR version. Are there really no-winch equipped Mi-17s (or is it something that can be added or deleted on the field) or do I have to make a new one from scratch to make an accurate model? Thanks in advance Yuri
  6. Good work! The new MiG-21 sheets seem very nice can't wait to get them. If you also did some MiG-29 sheets it would be perfect Yuri P.S. Just curious, why "Begemot"?
  7. No. However as joachim said, Zvezda had announced an 1/72 Mi-26 for 2005, (I'd like to make one too) but I heard some time ago they were a little late... Anyway at the beginning of february (5-10) there'll be the annual Nuremberg Toy Fair, where usually most manufacturers announce their new releases for the year. Then we'll know if they are still working on the Halo of if they gave up. Yes, there's also the Sanger Vacform, but I'll wait to see if Zvezda makes an injection molded Mi-26 before trying that option. Yuri
  8. From the photos I saw, the Revell kit seems to have a better decal sheet (with the "nose art" dragons used in Afganistan). However, Mandrake is right. It's the old Esci mold and seems it'll need some changes to the airframe (if I'm not wrong this means a fuselage "plug" of an inch or so) and some changes to the engines and nose, but I still have to get one to compare with the drawings. After all, it's the only Blinder available... there once was also the old Nova Vacform Blinder that pops up sometimes on E-bay, but it doesn't seem to be more accurate. Yuri
  9. You can print decals with an inkjet printer, however, as others said, these printers don't print white and the colors are translucent, so unless you are placing the decals on a white plane, you'll need to use a plain white decal sheet and then trim the decal. You also need a decal paper made for inkjet printers, otherwise the ink will smear. The other possible problem with inkjet printers is that the ink is less fade-resistant, so after some time (mainly if the model gets direct sunlight) the decals might fade. However the new inks (such as the Epson Durabrite, but I'm told that also HP made
  10. Well, I have the Kondor "Fulcrum-C" kit. The shape isn't bad (even if I think the bigger Fulcrum-C spine is a little too big), but the smaller parts are grossly oversize (mainly the missiles and missile rails) and in general lack in detail. Dunno about the Fulcrum-A but I suspect it's more or less the same, anyway I'd be glad to hear I'm wrong Also the ICM and Eastern Express Fulcrums should come from the same molds: given the level of detail of the Kondor kit of course I didn't get all of them just to check :D but I'm told they are reboxings. Talking about detail parts, I forgot that Equip
  11. Well, talking about kits the story is the same as with the Su-27: there's not an accurate kit. These planes made such big news when they appeared that everyone wanted to add a kit in the catalog but there wasn't enough data for an accurate kit (and as every manufacturer now has it, it's unlikely that Hasegawa and others will scrap the mold to make a new one). The least inaccurate kits are Airfix and Italeri (maybe because they were realease an year or so after the others...) Bilek makes a nice MiG-29 that is a reboxed Italeri kit with a better decal sheet and a couple on nice photoetched par

    Any news...

Well, me and my family just came back from a typical Ukrainian dinner. I had forgotten it was going to be a 12-course dinner! One for every month of the year. Great food, but I feel swollen like a Zeppelin :D Yuri

I just noticed by looking at the pictures that there are 2 bathtubs and 2 seats on the same sprue. They must be planning also a MiG-25RU or MiG-25PU, or both. It would be great to make one of the 2 seat MiG-25s used in the "Buran" space program (such as "Blue 22"). Yuri

Yes, I have an ukrainian friend, so I'm celebrating Xmas twice Btw Prop & Jet? Wow! Yuri

Uhm, not bad. Typical Kondor style, some flash an parts on the thick side, but not bad (I'll have to get one to check accuracy and fit ;) Of course the cockpit detail is sparse (the usual armchair) and the nozzles are too thick for the scale, but it seems better than the Hasegawa release. Landing gear and wheel wells seem very good. From parts breakdown it seems they planned other versions: the differences between P, PD and R-RB versions lie mainly in the nose, wings and nozzles so they just have to change one sprue. Now, we'd only need someone to make nice resin cockpit/nozzles (please mr.

yes and no I have both kits (well, to be frank I have 2 Zvezda and 4 ICM/KONDOR kits: they all knew I like the MiG-31 so I got more kits than I hoped for Xmas  The ICM/Kondor (also reboxed by Kopro I think) has better panel lines (while on the Zvezda kit are a bit in the heavy side), however there's some flash and mainly there are some prominent "steps" here and there that'll need to be filled and smoothed (probably a multipart mold that doesn't line up very nicely). So I think most of the panel lines detail will be lost. Also the clear parts need some polishing to become really "clear

Ken, was it in a MiG-25 or a MiG-31 that you nearly got arrested for having asked to take pictures of the cockpit? Just some old rms memories  Yuri

    Any news...

Wowowow, so it should be available soon via Hobbyterra or such. If the real maker is in fact Kondor (or Condor? Anyway ICM seems to rebox a number of their kits) I only hope it's a little better than their MiG-31: good overall shape but fit and surface detail isn't much good. And I didn't mention their MiG-29 and MiG-21... Btw, I was instead surprised by the level of detail of the ICM BTR-60PB (not exactly a "Jet Modeling" topic), not Hasegawa quality but close enough (just a little flash here and there a great improvement compared to the ACE release). It would be nice if the MiG-25 was up t
  19. Or an 1/72 An-124 Btw last year the italian government rented a Ruslan (from volga Dnepr I think) to bring back the Axum obelisk (it was taken in the 30's during the fascists military campaing in Africa and placed in Rome). The An-124 got a quite good media coverage as it transported the obelisk back home. Yuri
  20. The Tu-160 is there. I just saw on Hobby Link Japan website that the Trumpeter 1/72 Tu-160 is available, so it should be available also in Europe soon!! I have the bad idea to buy one to put next to my (not yet finished) A Model Blackjack. The only problem is that I'll need an hangar to display them :) Yuri
  21. Why did they scrap them? Well, it's hard to answer this question without getting involved in an endless political thread :( Anyway I'll try to answer to the best of my knowledge (most of which is based on Yefim Gordon books and Piotr Butowsky articles, correct me if I'm wrong). After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, relations between Ukraine and Russia have never been easy. Ukraine declared ownership of the military hardware on its soil and Russia cut off spares supply. For this reason most of the aircraft (and mainly the bomber force, that required a lot of support to remain airworthy)
  22. If the plastic seems brittle (and the sprue is attached very close to where there should be a clear part) I either use a heated blade or a cutting wheel in a motor tool, then sand the remainig pieces of sprue attached to the clear parts with fine sandpaper and if I scratched some of the parts that should remain clear I use either micro-mesh sanding sheets or "Novus" plastic polish to restore the clear. Both the heated blade and cutting wheel are intended to melt the sprue instead of cutting it avoiding any stress that might crack the clear parts. The cutting wheel is faster, but the heated bla
  23. About russian/soviet decals, it would be great to have a "generic" decal sheet with the numbers in various styles and colors (as you did in the Su-15 sheet). I'd also like a sheet or two with russian/soviet 16th air army (east germany) MiG-29s. Talking about Ukrainian Tu-160s, if I'm not wrong, Ukraine had 19 Tu-160s: 8 of them were finally sold back to Russia in 1999/2000 after years of negotiations (along with 3 Tu-95ms), 1 was preserved at the Poltava museum and all the others were scrapped (same thing happened to the Tu-95s because Ukraine had to get rid of all this stuff by 2000 to compl
  24. I'm considering building a concrete shelter for a MiG-29 diorama (1/72), the "half round section" shelters they had in East Germany. Does anyone know the exact size of these shelters and the best way to depict the inner "corrugated" concrete walls? Thanks in advance Yuri
  25. You can try this method: Take 2 pieces of copper wire (without insulator) of the right diameter. Paint one black and the other yellow and twist them to make a new "twisted" wire. Then cut to the length you need and place it on the seat. Works nice for 1/72 handles. Yuri
