  1. I have only seen the MH-53E re-released as of 2023, but no where have I found to buy it. I have not seen the CH-53E anywhere???
  2. Hell yeah! Semper Fi!! The GAU-21 RMWS is a little near and dear to my heart. I was the program manager for it when I was at MAWTS-1 and later up at NAVAIR when we were testing it and getting it into final production for the fleet. Here's a pic of the prototype system for a congressional visit day at MCAF Quantico. Trying to drum up congressional add money sowe could rapidly deploy the gun to the fleet. Also installed on this PAX bird 163086 was the ballistic floorboard armor.....stuff was a giant PITA. (Jus sayin) (Oh, you can tell its a VIP visit day...notice cl
  3. Fantastic CH-53E here!! Did you scratch build the GAU-21 RMWS? If you did, darn near perfect my friend!! My first boat squadron as a CH-53E guy was HMM-163(REIN) for Somalia in 1993/1994. My bird was YP-65. So I love me some Evil Eyes. In HMH-462 we had (4) brand new factory fresh CH-53E's. So we painted our Evil Eyes a little different for that float. Here is how our Evil Eyes looked 1993-1994 11th MEU Float.
  4. Well, Browsing the "evil-bay" as one does to keen an eye out for 53 stuff I ran into this little gem......with announcement of the 3d printed Seaking I guess it was only a matter of time. But $800 USD....ouch I wonder how "rough" the parts are and how easy or difficult it would be to build up. Even in 1/48th scale the Academy is a scratch builders dream its so darn big. I have two CH-47's now. One in 1/48th and one on 1/35th. I also bit the bullet and got the 1/35th CH-54 from ICM......big helo's
  5. Jon, Did you scratch build that rotorhead? Or is it the Reskit? It looks just fantastic. The first Academy I built I did not know about Reskit, so I scratch built my rotorhead blade fold lines. Your RH assembly is jaw dropping. I can see the pitch lock cylinders, the blade fold harness junction boxes, the dampers....WOW😃
  6. Looking good!!! Lots of patience my friend! Semper Fi Mac!! Gunny
  7. Beautiful Shitter Sir! I love the fact you weathered the aux tank to show the carbon fiber showing through. Thats exactly how some of our aux tanks look every day!! Dutch is right, this one must have just come off a quick wash rack....LOL You have Masons book so you have seen the wear and tear on these poor beasts. You even included a gray Sleeve and Spindle on the rotorhead!! Your blade tip weathering is spot on as well. Super nice build. Thank you for sharing it!!
  8. The MH-53E was in test colors at that time. Here is some pics of that bird. Also here is another shot of the first YCH-53E. "Whale-tail". You can really see the tail in this perspective. Also in this shot you can see the long fuel sponsons with out auxillary fuels tanks installed yet. The No. 3 engine exhaust is also much larger than the production delivered CH-53E's with the -416 GE motors. The No. 2 exhaust is also very short, and would prove problematic for heat build up on that part of the fuselage as well as compressor inlet issues. No rotor head cover, known to us as the "beanie
  9. Looking good Marine! Stay on target! r/Gunny Dan
  10. The AV-8B does not carry a 30mm gun. It has a 25mm gun in her pod. Ammo pod on one side gun pod on the other. Its the GAU-12. I agree it would be very difficult to nail a drone with 20mm, 25mm, 30mm from an aircraft platform. The 20mm CIWS is different as stated due to its ability to rapidly acquire a target as small as these drones. Good ol' air to air aerial gunnery from a CH-53E, CH-53K, or MH-60R/S would do the trick nicely. Especially MH-60R/S as we mounted the complete Common Defensive Weapons System (CDWS) on the Romeo and Sierra. It Consists of: GAU-21 .5
  11. Keeping the topic going as far as CH-53 research. Here is an amazing photograph much like the one above. Taken at NAS Patuxent River, MD sometime in the late 1970's. The lead CH-53D, has no tanks, original CH-53A blades.....and what appears to me, WAY before photoshop a BENT TAIL? Is this an engineering test vehicle for the eventual CH-53E bent tail? the YCH-53E first was delivered to flight test with the "Whale Tail". It was straight and had a horizontal stabalizer much like its little brother the H-60. Also, the two 53's in the background have rotorhead camers installed, an
  12. Interesting topic. I see with mostly fixed wing. So here are a few from the helo side: CH-53A/D/E/K: HMT-301 Windwalkers call sign "Walker" - DECOM HMHT-302 Pheonix call sign "Pheonix" - active HMH-361 Flying Tigers call sign "Tiger" - active HMH-362 Ugly Angels call sign "Ugly" - active now VMM-362 MV-22B's HMH-363 Red Lions call sign "Lion" - active now VMM-363 MV-22B's HMH-366 Hammer Heads call sign "Hammerhead" DECOM HMH-461 Iron Horse call sign "Iron Horse" - active HMH-462 Heavy Haulers call sign "Thunder" - active HMH-463 Pegasus call
  13. As a long time rotorhead I would have to go with these: 1/48th: CH-53A/D - new one, not the Revell kit, its ok, but a new one would great MH-53J PAVE LOW III - if you do a 53A/D you can easily do some extra sprues and release a good PAVE CH-37 Mojave HH/CH-3 H-19 1/35th: CH-53E - they did the CH-54, so why the heck not!!!!! Gy Dan
  14. Ski, Makes sense to me. Always hated re-Modexing every time we did turn over either in Oki or the sand box. Semper Torque! Gunny
  15. Andy, For some reason late 2000's the MAWs directed units that were not attached to a MEU were to paint "HMH-WEST", HMH-EAST" for their squadron markings. I am still trying to track down the "secret" they were trying to keep here......?/? Gunny
  16. Mike, I did not hear that '086 was retiring, but it makes sense. she has a lot of hours on her. And, I have a lot on hours on her as well!! HAJO, The "Green Monster" as Mike refers to her was a specific test bird that was ordered by Naval Air Systems Command from Sikorsky Aircraft. 163086, was a CH-53E in a Block Upgrade configuration and was delivered directly to NAS Patuxent River MD, the home of tet and evaluation squadron HX-21. It never was in the Flet Marine Force (FMF). As such she had many add ons, testing missions, take offs, add ons, etc
  17. Phabulous Phrogs! Beautiful job here! Semper Torque! Gunny
  18. Great start to a really nice UH-34D! Gotta love the HMM's and the "Dog" of Vietnam. My first maintenance chief in my HMH-462 days at MCAS Tustin was a UH-34D crewchief and gunner. Great stories of that ol beast! Anyways, watching this build so I can learn, as this is a helicopter Iwant to build, along with the 1/32 HH-43, HOK to us jarheads. Semper Fi USMCVet s/f Gunny Dan
  19. Sorry Mike, My name is Dan....and I am a CH-53-aholic........is this right meeting? 😆
  20. Ok, ‘The picture above was taken during Desert Storm. The aircraft was apart of HMH-464 out of MCAS New River. ‘The Condors”. This airplane is BuNo 162001 (MSN 65478), it was off the USS Guadalcanal, and the photo was taken by then Captain Rick Mullen, a squadron pilot with HMH-464. Col Mullen informed me it was taken during Operation “Lonesome Dove”. The crew chief of this airplane was Ken Breiner. Along with the shark mouth, and the storm trooper art, it had “free Kuwait” painted on the belly. Ken provided me a picture of him next to his aircraft as well. The aux-tank art
  21. Ok, as far as the USMC bird I am on it. I think I know who's A/C it was but I need to ask them first. r/Gunny Dan
  22. Elmo, Outstanding update. I can smell the hydraulic fluid and see her getting prepped for flight! Wow. I too love the loading ladders, they are just like the A/C with the weathering. The RAT is a nice add, excellent representation of the system, and one not normally seen in modeling this airplane. Oh, and dont forget those racks and pylons, they are amazing, some of my Ordnance bubbas can't believe the detail! Semper Fi Mack! Gunny Dan
  23. Bill, First and foremost Semper Fi brother!! Having been around CH-53's my whole 34 years, I had my turn as well supporting HMX-1 for various white side lifts as wells as Testing and Evaluation during my time at MAWTS-1 in Yuma as well as PAX River MD. Your insight to the early years of HMX-1 is great! Your recolections and details are amazing. Thank you for sharing these with the modeling community here. its great to have "the guy who was there" views. Invaulable really. Best thing in the Marine Corps was being a Sgt/SSgt and having your own bird. Name on the si
