    Thank you for your encouragement.

In reality it should have its own section for people to share derails like seats and cockpits for individual airplanes.   Over the years I have found the one thing modelers don't have access to is what the bloody seat looks like or what color it is.

This thread is going to get very long indeed just with my information.

    Cheers

Thank you for taking the time to post all of this info! Like I said before, I love learning some of the geek levels of detail about airplanes, even though rarely apply most of it to my actual models. I just find it very interesting.

And I just have the two... One F-100A the other an F-8....

Wait, you have an F-100A seat?? Can you post a couple of photos, please?

  3. That’s a pretty broad subject! Is there any particular jet(s) that appeals to you? Then folks could point you towards the best kit.  I’ve really scaled back my use of aftermarket, too.

Some of my favorite jet kits I’ve built:

F-4 Phantom: I’m currently building a Zoukei-Mura F-4E and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The Meng F-4E and G are also supposed to be quite good. The Tamiya F-4B is the absolute best F-4 kit available in 1/48.

F-16: Tamiya is very good and I hear the new Kinetic kits are pretty good, too.

Hawker Hunter: Airfix. Airfix’s other recent 1/48 jet kits are also supposed to be pretty good.

F-104: I’ve built the Hasegawa C and it was a fun build. The new Kinetic kits are supposed to be even better.

F-15E: Revell is very good, especially as an early, Gulf War version. I’ve heard good and bad things about the Great Wall kit.

I have no personal experience with these, but have read good things about them:
A-10: The upcoming Great Wall A-10C is supposed to be very good, with the new Academy kit also getting pretty good reviews.

    F-14: Tamiya

    F-35: Tamiya

I can say stay away from Kitty Hawk kits if you want an enjoyable build experience.

Others will have more and better info for you. I’m sure there are a lot of good non-US jet subjects, but I’m drawing a blank right now.

  4. Hi All,

Posting here to get more views. I know it's pretty much unobtanium, but does anyone have this looooong out of production Repliscale sheet? I'm willing to buy the whole sheet but I'm mainly interested in a couple of "SJ"s for an F-4E.

    Thanks!

  5. I've got the fuselage fix for the Z-M kit, but I'm debating whether or not I want to go through the effort to use it. Like Gene says, it's not very noticeable and I think it will be even less so if you're building a SEA or Europe I camouflaged jet. It seems like it might be more noticeable on a large area of a single, light color, like a Navy Gull Grey jet. There's a thread here on ARC that goes into a lot of detail about the fuselage shape and I seem to recall Jeffrey posting some in-progress pics of his fix.

Re. the other available F-4 kits, I'm thoroughly enjoying the Z-M F-4E I'm currently building with Hypersonic's slat set. If I hadn't already spent far too much time and money on aftermarket to correct the Academy F-4B, I'd be all over the Tamiya one. I'll choose a Tamiya F-4D over the Z-M one, but I'm not going to wait. The Meng F-4E kit looks okay, but I don't like how they did the keel between the engines, so it's all Z-M for me. My multiple Hasegawa F-4s have all gone to someone else's long term storage. They're not bad kits (I've already built a ton of them), but the Z-M kits give a much more enjoyable experience.

  6. Hi @Gwen Phoenix,

I’m not familiar with the Steel Beach set, but yes, they’re the sort of rounded, boxy fairings. IIRC, there are two up under the intakes and two more back near the main gear wells. I can dig up my photos of them if you’d like to have them.

If you “borrow” your husband’s F-4J upgrade set and he comes looking it, we’ll all claim we know nothing about it! 😀

  7. Hi @Gwen Phoenix,

I’m currently using the Hypersonic conversion with the Z-M F-4E it was intended for, but I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be adapted to work on a Monogram or Hasegawa F-4J. Note that the slats on the F-4S have a different profile than the F-4E/F/G. Here’s a quick summary of the differences: Link

It’s not too difficult to modify the Air Force slats to look like Navy ones. I once corrected the Hasegawa F-4S slats with a little styrene and Milliput. I think if you can handle adapting the Hypersonic conversion to fit your base kit, you’ll be able to fix the slats. I’d remove the inboard slat’s actuator fairings from the resin leading edge part and glue them to your kit wing. You’ll also need to extend the wing fence farther aft.

The F-4S had the wing reinforcement strap, so Hypersonic has you covered there.

If you need any photos of the slats and wing fence, PM me and I’ll send them to you.

    HTH.

  8. Based on what’s already included in the early F-4E kit, it will have the ARN-101 doghouse, TISEO, and an ALQ-131, so at least the exterior parts will be there for a Seymour Johnson jet. Hopefully they’ll also include correct cockpit parts.

I just saw what Ultracast wants for the Afterburner sheet. Yikes!

I have the ZM kit but haven’t had any luck finding the ZM 3-D cockpit set. Would the Quinta set designed for the Meng kit fit instead?

    Thanks,  Tom

I thought I'd reply to this question in case somebody else is searching for info about the Quinta cockpits for the Z-M and Meng F-4s. While you can use the set intended for the Z-M kit on the Meng kit, it's a bit more difficult to go the other direction and use the Meng set on the Z-M kit.

I bought the  Meng F-4E set for my Z-M build because it has the modified WSO console and instrument panel for DMAS/ARN-101 F-4Es. Dimensionally, what I found with the F-4E set will probably apply to the F-4G kits as well. I found that the forward cockpit instrument panels and consoles are just a tiny bit too large for the Z-M kit, but can be made to work. The Meng rear panel is also slightly larger and is flatter than Z-Ms, meaning that a couple of smaller details are all on the same plane or missing on the Meng, while they're on different planes with the Z-M. Easily addressed with a hobby knife. The Meng rear consoles, however, are too long by several mm, so the details are stretched to fill the space. I think Meng got the INS and gyro black boxes too small or not far enough forward in the cockpit. Z-M got the console length and black boxes correct. The Quinta consoles can be made to fit the Z-M kit, but you'll end up chopping them up a bit.

    HTH.

I seem to remember the Monogram kit is the only one with an accurate wing but over all the Hasegawa kit takes the win because while the monogram kit is accurate overall its isnt that great.

The Monogram AV-8B, correct? Their AV-8A builds into a nice model with a little work. Worth a look if you can find one cheap.

Glad this thread popped. I’m about to pull out the old Revell F-15E BEagle for an in-flight build and wanted to know if the kit decals happen to be one of the tails that participated in the first nights raid in DS?  I’m attached to the 6x MK-20/2xAIM-7 (F’s ?)/2xAIM-9L load out hence the question.
    Cheers

The original issue of the Revell 1/48 kit has decals for the jet that killed a helicopter with a laser guided bomb later in the war. I can’t find anything that shows it flew on the first night. The only other decal sheets with DS-era markings are Repliscale - 48-5022 with City of Goldsboro, and Superscale - SS48401 with three 336th TFS jets and one 335th jet. Every other decal sheet I’ve found only depict postwar jets.
