I am away from home right now. I will pull out the kit when I get home and give you more details. The most notable difference is the fuel fill ports on the right side of the fuselage. Gallery and Revell have 3 ports . The Italeri kit has only 2 but has the provisions to add a third in either the forward low position or the forward high position for the auxiliary internal tank used on the ASW variants. The Italeri kit includes the collectives and the rotor diameter is correct. The Italeri kit also has the hand holes in the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer that Gallery missed. Do not get

Gents, I am glad you can use the information I posted. Keep an eye out on that link as I am still looking for more drawings and photos. I have over 1500 photos of the uh-34/s-58 series spread out over several drives. I will post more as I find them. Gary -

Gents, I had to look through 4 external drives to find these and there may be more. The 4 data point studies are drawn in 1/48 scale and may be printed on an 11x17 for a full size drawing. I will post the photo comparisions of the Gallery and Italeri Fuselage halves on top of these drawings. These drawings are my own studies please do not publish them without my permission. Here is a link to the H-34/S-58 file in my drop box account. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8fk7s9zdb9qzd2x/AADuVgZMvq_hcVgvi13rdORpa?dl=0 Gary -

Eric, I have been trying to reply to this message for days but I was locked out by the new system. I have some tech pubs drawings that may help you with you problem and I have photos if I can track them down. I will get them up on dropbox. PM me and I will send you a link as soon as I find them. I just lost a hard drive and am trying to restore all my archives to my system. Gary -
I am currently working on a comparison right now. Some parts of the Italeri kit are more accurate or complete. Some details are softer. The Italeri kit would be the one to use for an early Navy Variant. Interesting the center of the rotor mast is different on both kits and the Italeri has the right rotor diameter.

Gents sorry to tune in so late have been away on work for a while. Tank was the first man to the buzzer with the correct answer 50/50 Army and Marine green. This started when both the Army and Marines were sharing Whitehouse support flying VH-34. Each service wanted to retain their own branch of service color Olive Drab and Field Green. The White House said no, their are missions where both services are providing joint lifts and they wanted all aircraft the same colors, The compromise was a 50/50 mix but each service was allowed to keep the service name on the aircraft. This remained the stan

Walt, There are several options depending on how new or old you want the paint to be. My favorites are Vallejo Model Air 71093 and Model Master 1712 Model Master Acryl 4724 works for more faded paint Gunze H340 is usable as well as Humbrol 105. I use the Model Air with a few drops of future added as a thinner and binder. It also makes the paint harder add promotes adhesion. Gary

Rod, Another major difference would be the windows. The HC-2 windows would match but the HU-5 windows are larger and rectangular. As Tank said the steps are different the nav lights are different and you would need to leave off the flotation bags from the wessex. Then there are antennas and other differences but I cannot find My Wessex book right now. It might be possible to grab the nose from the Combat Models 1/32 UH-34 vacuform if you can find one. None of the other problems is difficult to overcome after you get a nose. Gary

I am glad I started this thread, it has brought up lots of memories from my time in tail hooks, some good some not so good. Rex hit it right on the money, Marine deployments and rotation at best almost seemed to be a by gosh and by golly preposition. Seems or parent service the Navy would fly the wings off and airplane send to depot or SLEP and then say give to the Jarheads we want a new airplane. We were always the last in line for an airframe. Parts were some what the same but you have to hand it to The troops, we managed to beg borrow or steal(borrow semi permanently) anything we could get

Gentlemen I am glad to see my question generated an interesting discussion. I am aware of the different lengths and time periods having been with VMFA-232 from 1975 to 1981. The comment about the various fits and modifications made me slaugh. I remember times when we had 12 aircraft and everyone of them was in a different phase of modification. I photographed one launch in 1976 that was 4 airplanes and all 4 had different paint schemes. Thanks for your help I will search my collection, I do not remember the antennas in any Hasegawa kit I will have to look again. Gary

I know that either the Monogram F-4J or the Esci F-4 1/48 scale kit contained the RHAW antennas to mount on the upper shoulder of the intakes. but I no longer have either kit. Can anyone tell me which kit it was. Are there aftermarket sets available? Does anyone have a set I can buy or borrow to make a mold with? Thanks for your assistance. Gary

MAG 1 posted a topic in Buy and sell - add scale to your title
I know this is out of production, does anyone have a set they are not using or at least a good scan. Thanks in advance Gary -
Richard, There were 3 Phantom units assigned to MAG-24 at MCAS Kaneohe Bay. They were VMFA-212 Lancers, VMFA-232 Red Devils and VMFA-235 Death Angels. All flew low vis Phantoms. All three had at least one aircraft 00 which had some color elements over the subdued scheme. Eagle Strike had a sheet that included the 235 bird. I also remember a low vis 212 bird but I cannot remember one for the Red Devils. Gary

Jim, Those side panels are heater ducts you can eliminate the plate and scratch build the ducts. Have fun.
