motorbikes, bass guitar, blues, modelling, cycling

i love radial engined planes, ww2 fighters, mainly allied as the luftwaffe paint schemes are beyond my abilities! spitfires in all incarnations although i don't yet have a griffon engined variant. i do the odd jet but hate painting white wheel bays!
1. Hello all, I have an ol revell 1/48 B24d that I'm planning to build as Commando, Churchills personnal transport. Trouble is, I am having difficulty in finding decent pictures of the plane. I know it was unarmed, but does anyone know what the tail gun position looked like? Also, if anyone can print me some decals or tell me how too I'd be eternally happy. It had quite a funky colour scheme i believe, flat black and dark grey possibly. Ta James
2. Here are some test fit pics. They don't do it justice. I'll stand by my 'lack of cockpit detail' comments of earlier, but now ive had time to look properly - Its a smart bit of kit. I hope these pics come out, or even show up here. Hopefully you can see the way the top fuselage joins together. Any gaps i think are due to the wings not being glued in and me not putting interior pieces in. seriously, this is awesome.
3. I'm glad someone has test fit it, that takes away any concerns I had. Honestly, I'm not fussy when it comes to stuff like this. I'm not a good enough modeller! I just tried to find negatives to be a miser. Boo me. Models for sale . com has a fair few in for a good price for UK people. They ship overseas but I don't know how cost effective that is. For the xtradecal sets, I have to say that the 91 gulf war scheme and the USAAF colours look mighty fine. I just noticed what Tony means about the backward bomb. Canards on a free fall weapon? I think I'll do either modern low vis grey or f
4. Ok, now I've had a chance for a proper look. Moulding looks a bit soft and fuzzy in a few areas. The flaps look like the mould halves didn't quite mate correctly. Cockpit detail is fuzzy as well. Will certainly benefit from aftermarket items, especially if you want to try and have the canopies open. Landing looks a little oversized and detail is verging on soft but at least it will support the model well. I haven't test fitted any parts but I suspect there will be a moderate amount of sanding and filling required, mainly due to the many parts required for the fuselage. The sprues have
5. Just got mine. Wow. This thing looks absolutely gorgeous. Not as many parts as I thought there'd be, but the price was so low compared to tamigawa models of the same size I'm not grumbling. Plenty of room inside for the balance weights, and the wheel bays look nice. I'll have a proper look when my wife gets home as my daughter is acting up. Lovely.
6. My wife gave birth to Emily Rolfe aat 19:48 GMT 08/08/2007. 6lb 13oz (3.1 kg). The missus managed a super fast forward delivery (about 4hrs from arriving at hospital) not bad for the first. As a plus point, Liz's stomach went straight back to flat after the birth! She also nearly broke my little finger and tried quite hard to dislocate my thumb, break my neck and push me through a wall. I'd always heard about the strength of women in labour but I wasn't expecting much from my petite sweet little wife! Thank christ I'm a bloke. Its been said before but there's no way I could have done it.
7. I have now finished the landing gear, I can't get pics because my little camera can't focus on them properly. The tamiya kit has ace landing gear, you can build them up and then they can be inserted into the wheel bays once the model is painted. I will be painting the metal finish first, then the black and using a scribe to lightly remove paint from the panel lines. may look naff, but its worth a go!
8. Progress report!!! As the nightfighter's did not normally carry bombs I have been very lazy and won't be painting the bomb bay. This will save a good few days work as the detail is superb OOB. I have also glued on part of the cockpit, mainly the parts that attach to the bomb bay/ wingspar assembly. I will post pics when I have sprayed the interior int green. I use a 1-1 mix of tamiya zinc chromate and forest green. Its not accurate but it looks good in models and I think gives better contrast to black controls and shadows and highlights. I have also assembled a mossie pathfinder mk 4 bomb
9. No progress as yet on this, we had some unplanned scans for the baby as the midwife didn't think she had grown. Everything turned out fine, we are now on 38 weeks today and it looks like labour could start any time soon! Anyway, I have a question for everyone. The 2 options for the tamiya kit are a 409 sqdn bird, about which I can find lots of info, the other is a fighter interception unit mossie. I can't find much about this units use of mossies at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would like info on their base, ops and timeframe the mk 17 mossie was used. I did find som
10. Thanks for the offer, but I will use the plastic kit parts for the receivers. Mainly because they show up better on photos but also because I still aint good with PE. Chunky plastic parts are also easier to repair when they break!
11. Well, having looked at the mossie and got as far as glueing the wing spar to the top of the bomb bay I decided to go back to the beau. Anybody who has built one of these knows how good the kit is. It falls together. Not ahving a camera for a few days means there are no cockpit pics, but I cheated quite severely on the inside as I am concerned about getting my models mostly finished before my babys due. The cockpit detail is ok, and I will try to take some pics, but with the glazing in place it may be impossible. The biggest challenge will be to make the black scheme look good. The mast on
12. Well, having spent two days dry fitting bits and wondering where I'm going to build this, I'm ready to start. I'm not doing an OOB pic as most people know what a kit in a box looks like and my wife has hidden the camera. Cockpit build photos tomorrow. I've never built a mossie with the entire bomb bay closed, so i was happy to see that the fit is excellent, even without tidying up pieces or glueing them together. If I can control myself, I will try and paint the wings, fuselage and rear wing bits (brain fade!) before sticking them all together. I always mean to do this with models but
13. Well, after what can only be described as a bad week last week I need to make a start and post a pic. So far I have taken a few pieces off sprues and dry fitted them. Having rearranged the flat for the baby I don't have anywhere to do my models. Oh well. Pics tonight or in the morning.
14. My tamiya mossie's wing spar is severely bent oob. Is it possible to straighten it out without snapping it? ta
