  1.     I have been using this technique I say since the late 90's.  At least mostly the pre shading process.  Not so much on the postshading.  But really can't remember who or what made me try this for the first time and have been using it for the most part ever since.  Some one mentioned it originated with the Spanish modeler community both pre shade and post shading.  and used the term "Spanish School" this I have never heard of ever over the years on any of the modeling sites.  Anyone know or shed some light.  I know there are many opinions of the process of over doing it  or when not to use it.   But this question is how this came about if anyone knows.   Just a history lesson.  Thanks in advance.

  2. Thanks folks....ARC is a Godsend not only for the vast aircraft knowledge, but for life knowledge. :cheers:/>

Just sold it to a disabled Marine only 37 yrs old, cash. The guy was almost emotional that now he didn't have to rely on his sister or brother in law to get him to the VA. Made me want to give it to him outright if I could have afforded it....dropped the price a bit anyway :)/> God bless the man.

    God bless you!

I've contemplated building that plane but I'm not sure about the crew names, or 664 which Capt. Paul Johnson flew when his plane hit by a SAM. . Theer's a Discovery Channel Wings episode where Capt. P Johnson talks about how they didn't have as much of a cost as other wars, but it was a very personal cost with one of his squadron killed when his plane was shot down.

Being I was interested in planes as a kid back then, and seeing all the news footage of them, got my interest in modeling this subject. My goal was to model each combat aircraft type, some I did duplicates. My earlier ones look terrible so need to be replaced. So my built models at the moment include:

    United States

    2 F-14s, 3 A-7Es, S-3B, E-2C, KA-6D, from the USS Kennedy

    3 A-10s, F-16A, F-15E, F-15C, F-111E, EF-111A, F-111F (nearly complete), RF-4C, F-117A

    F/A-18A, F/A-18C, F/A-18D, AV-8B, OV-10D

    Canada

    CF-188A

    France

    Jaguar A, Mirage F1CR, Mirage 2000C

    UAE

    Mirage 2000C

    Qatar

    Mirage F1EDA

    Kuwait

    Mirage F1CK, A-4KU (needs a refit)

    United Kingdom

    Tornado GR1, Tornado FMk3, Jaguar GrMk1, Buccaneer S2B

    Italy

    Tornado

    Saudi Arabia

    Tornado

    Bahrain

    F-5E

    to do: F-4G, A-6E, Saudi F-5E, F-16C

I have over the years followed your Desert Storm collection. I am not as far along as you are, as I started to plan my project when I got home. I have builds in 72nd and 48th scale and will probably have a couple in 32nd scale. But as the years go by since the Gulf War, kits that were not available have since appeared to fill in the holes on both coalition and Iraqi aircraft. Some aircraft only available in 72nd scale such as the RAF Victor a tough build. But most will be in 48th scale. Capt Johnson flew 681 on the Sandy mission that took place in Jan 21st 1991, helping to locate and rescue Lt Devon Jones of VF-301 when his F-14A+ Tomcat went down.

  4. The Commander in my Squadron told us the HALF of us would not return. We all came back! However, there was good reason to believe that casualties were going to be high. There was the threat of chemical and biological weapons which we weren't sure Saddam would use or not. On paper the Iraqi forces were very formidable and had experienced combat in Iran. We had a lot of new weapon systems that were untried in combat, albeit extensively used in training, but we were not completely sure of their effectiveness in the desert environment. It is a credit to our armed forces training that we did so well in that war. Still as 11Bee mentioned, the cost was low to those of us whom did not lose a friend or family member. But to those individuals the cost was extremely high. I was very glad that the losses were far lower than expected.

There was 60 of us in the C-5 as we flew over. Looking at each other among the equipment and the 4 helos neatly folded up inside. Talking with the CO and departments heads coming along, and he says, well boys are we ready? Our Senior Chief, says well sir as ready as we can be, the men chosen are the best in their fields, the helo has performed as well as expected, we are motivated and yes sir we are ready to go. 60 went over, 60 returned. Were we scared? Absolutely!!

  5. 25 years ago, I was sitting in our HH-60H (HCS-5) helo on the tarmac as Desert Storm commenced at the forward deployed air base at Al Jouf Saudi Arabia. As the A-10's had already taken off for where ever they were going. Overheard a comment that it was just as if it was from the Bible, the locusts over Babylon, The Apaches and Blackhawks over Baghdad. What an opening night. Also my birthday, I turned 31.

  7. You asked who SMOKES and what do you enjoy..

I DONT SMOKE. . NEVER HAVE.

    <_</>

I can say the same my friend on the smoking. Wish I can say the same about the liquor though I have never been intoxicated, don't like beer, but on holidays or a nice evening out on a romantic date a glass of wine for dinner I would take a nip and most of the time I don't even finish it. The holiday season would be a small shot of Cognac or Baileys, but thats it. Otherwise I can do without it.

And never had any kind of Alcohol in MY life...(in case I miss the alcohol thread!) and NEVER had any form of liquor pass MY lips!!

    :whistle:/>

  8. And you posted a thread about smoking on a modeling board, why? Commenting on not smoking in a smoking thread seems waaaaay more relevant than commenting on smoking on a modeling board. But, whatevas, go ahead and stink. Just not upwind of me.

I agree with you on this. I hate cigarettes, cigars and anything that has to with the act of smoking whatever it is.

  9. Earlier in the week my mechanic reports that my Volvo S40 is ready you can come get it anytime. His shop is in Montclair, Ca. So I figure maybe after picking up the car I can swing by Pegasus Hobbyshop not far from the shop. Emphasizing to myself just some supplies, paint and maybe a #1 tip for the Paasche. No MODELS!!!. Well I was there for almost 4 hours gawking at the new kits that I have only seen on the websites, cannot believe how heavy the new Kitty Hawk Mirage F1 was when I picked it up to check the box out. Haven't been to any HS in about 2 years if not more. So I was like in a candy store. Seeing the old MPC repop of the Monkees mobile made me smile, that is the first model I ever built (or shall I say attempted)when I was about 7 years old. So after the oohs and the aahs and some fondling of the plastic. Nice that this shop is user friendly and have some kits opened and will let you look inside. And whats cool the same people running the store, one saying hey your back, and I'm telling you it has been more than 2 years they remember that's cool. Whats nice the store was full of people all ages. It was good to see the kids in there, boys and girls. Anyway this store is well stocked in the supplies. So after getting some Alclad, paints and the airbrush tip. As I head up towards the cashier and did a double take, there is a whole box of Tenax!!!! in the adhesives/cement display case. Wait a minute you have Tenax? The clerk tells me they just got a shipment, I say but he stopped making it. Yes he did the clerk tells me, but as far as he knows he started up again and just got this shipment this week. Really now? So this is new stock not not left over? No this is new, we have been out for almost a year. So when I get home I check Squadron and Sprue Brothers and see if they have some. And no they do not. Hmm, so of course I bought 3 bottles. Thinking maybe I should've bought the box. Which there was only one that contained 12 bottles. But I don't know if it will evaporate eventually even in the sealed bottles. So does anyone know is Tenax back? This is news to me as I am on here pretty much everyday. I have new bottles here it is Tenax, same stuff. The clerk at Pegasus seemed well informed and he was pretty cool. So I have no reason to doubt his word. So to say it was a worthwhile trip. Unexpected surprise, and it was really nice to be in there for few hours. And I cannot believe I didnt buy any kits.

  10. Thats great news to read about, ordered a set of Tigercat props on the 26th of December got an email the next day the 27th that they were shipped that day as well. So looks like they may show up on Thursday the 2nd of January. Still a day late for the GB which ends on the 1st. Not Ultracasts fault, mine for not catching that the props were missing for my project sooner. Happy New Year!!

    Chuck

  11. Lookin' good Chuck!

Thanks David, it is actually finished except for the props. Found one, but ordered a set from Ultracast but I don't think they will arrive here until after the 1st. Added the final bits today. Wanted to post the final images but it isn't really done without any propellers in the completed thread.

  12. Got the decals applied. Easy process as there are no stencils on this subject to worry about. The hardest decal to put on was the prop warning stripe on the nose, very delicate and a perfect fit. Using the Microscale system which is what I use. The basic Black was Xtracrylix Night Black which is glossy, then a random airbrushing of Polly Scale Oily Black and then gloss coated with future. Then used for the first time for me was Life Color Flat clear coat.

    f7f1213o.JPG

USMC Modex 24, after the decals were applied.

    f7f1213t.JPG

The Oily Black panels showing under the clear coat breaking up the overall Black. So far what I wanted it to do, so hopefully the Flat Clear doesn't even it out.

    f7f1213u.JPG

The outer folding wing panels decaled ready to flat coat and install.

When mixing the Life Color Flat clear, it is quite thick and really had to thin it down. Not like the Pactra Flat and Polly S Flat which you could almost shoot right out of the bottle. But I like the way it layed down for me. I was totally satisfied in how the final coat looked once it dried. The blotchiness and un even look was exactly what I really wanted to simulate for this finish. What you would see from the harsh environment of the Korean Peninsula.

    f7f1213s.JPG

The sinister look of the paint job and what this aircraft mission was all about. Did have some silvering from the decals, but I could hide a lot of that with some paint chipping that I will do when it's time to a little bit more weathering and heavy use areas.

    f7f1213r.JPG

Now to set it off and ready to add the final bits and darn, I just cannot find the props anywhere. So I ordered a set from Ultra cast, Thank God they had some in stock, but will they get here before the 1st? Cross my fingers.

    f7f1213q.JPG

    f7f1213p.JPG

So now the final phase, install the landing gear, doors and ordnance. Almost done, just hope the Props show up in time. Anyway Happy New Year. More to follow.

  13. As this GB winds down, I am quite happy to be in the final stages of this project. Now at this point, I airbrushed Xtracylix acrylic Gloss Black on the overall airframe. Starting at the bottom and working my way to the top. This color sprays rather well out of the brush, not much issue in clogging that can be an issue with acrylics.

    f7f1213i.JPG

    f7f1213h.JPG

    f7f1213f.JPG

After airbrushing the overall Glossy Black, I then used the new Testor Polly Scale Oily Black which is a flat base black with a not as a jet black per say, the shade is lighter and gives the overall airframe some contrast than just leaving it in just Black.

    f7f1213m.JPG

Painting different panels, using it to post shade some of the panel lines enhances the look and also breaks up the overall black, hoping when the Flat Clear coat is applied it will still show this effect.

    f7f1213d.JPG

    f7f1213e.JPG

Next to apply Future as a clear coat for the decaling phase and also to do some weathering as well.

    f7f1213g.JPG

    f7f1213j.JPG

    f7f1213k.JPG

So this is it for now, so far so good. Next to apply the Future clear coat and then the decals, this scheme will be pretty basic, not much in stenciling or markings. So this shouldn't take more than 1/2 a day.

    f7f1213l.JPG

Until next time, Merry Christmas to all.

  14. Taking advantage of spring like weather. Today airbrushed the canopy section of the airframe Aeromaster Interior Green.

    f7f1213c.JPG

Let it sit a day and airbrush the black.

    f7f1213a.JPG

Will try something new for that I am sure has been done before when painting a black airframe.

    f7f1213b.JPG

That is it for now a quick update. More to follow.

    Chuck

    Fly Navy

  15. After a long hiatus, an unexpected move. Kind of threw us for a loop. Also moving just takes the motivation away. Now that we are settled in. Back to work and hopefully get the Tigercat finished. We had left off with completing the airframe, inserting the wing fold bits. Now we will use Cutting Edges masks to mask off the canopy to prepare for painting.

    f7f813f.JPG

Here is CE's masking set I will use.

Working front to back. 1st applying the masks on the windscreen. 3 sections. Easy to apply and they are sticking to canopy and staying put and conforming well to the curves.

    f7f813c.JPG

Next the canopy, 1 piece covering this section. Again applies quite easily,

    f7f813b.JPG

The rear operator canopy is a 2 piece affair that also takes in account for the hump in the glass. The first piece attaches along the frame rail then 2nd piece compensates for this and covers that section of the glass. Pretty thought out process.

    f7f813a.JPG

So with that we can go to the paint shop and airbrush the canopy frames interior green before laying the basic black coat. Using the masks was not tedious at all. Though not a tough frame to mask with just masking tape. Still this is the one thing I really do not like to do is mask. So until next time. More to follow.
