  1. Crisp's photos show both a 'Commando Step', as fitted to the HC.4 (and, in a modified form, to the Mk.50), and a pair of AN/ALQ-157 units... In the case of the Sea King, the HC.4 (derived from the export 'Commando' version), used by the squadrons of what eventually became the Commando Helicopter Force, known as the 'Junglies' - they originally almost exclusively transported/supported the Royal Marines, before CHF became part of JHC... ....the nickname 'Junglies' was coined for the Whirlwinds which first operated in the CHF role, and was successively passed down to the Wessex and
  2. For those interested, a former driver of these - and who had some involvement in the kit's development - takes an in-depth look at it as the opener to a 'Work In Progress' thread over at Britmodeller: https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235128424-sea-king-has1-xv666-826-nas-hms-eagle-1970-new-tool-148-airfix/
  3. Always pleased to help when I can, and glad this wasn't too late after all!
  4. Excellent work, and the engine modification details are particularly useful for me - I've a few spare sets of Airfix/Heller E-3/707 engines put aside for use on -135 builds, and rather than just 'educated guesswork' now know exactly what's involved in adapting them! 👍
  5. Been a few months and you've quite probably finished this by now, but whilst posting in another thread I noticed the photos in the old Airfix Magazine article which I uploaded included a ramp shot:
  6. You can also include the HH-53Cs and HC-130Ns of the 67th ARRS based at RAF Woodbridge, who provided downrange SAR coverage for Apollo, Skylab and Shuttle missions - the Kings would tank the Jollies down to The Azores, where they would be on stand-by in the event of a post-launch abort...
  7. Thanks, gents - a most pleasant surprise to find this one suddenly attracting attention again almost three years after first posting it!
  8. If the square of the hypotenuse equals two-thirds of a three-legged horse and you subtract the number first thought of, how many fingers am I holding up?
  9. Latest one obviously thinks the forum's for another type of modelling... 🙄
  10. It turned out that vibrations from our 'sprung' floor was causing the shelves to gradually work their way off of their rear support pins - solved by replacing them with silicone-covered ones, along with silicone 'feet' to the corners of the shelves, which combine to act as 'dampers'... ....it had never been a problem in our previous house, as the display case had stood on a solid floor there - so it was something of a shock when I walked through the lounge one day and there was a sudden series of crashes as three shelves dropped onto each other in quick succession... ....it took me a
  11. I kid you not - section from Page 145 of 'Farnborough, 100 Years of British Aviation': An advantage of brush painting means things like that are hard to do - I don't mask often, and then mainly only to achieve straight demarcation lines... Three shelves went and took down all eight Sea Kings that I'd completed at that time: The four which had been highest up were fairly easily repaired within a quite short period: The lower-down more heavily-damaged DayGlo-adorned Belgian and German ones took quite a while longer, but both were eventually resto
  12. How dare mere members even contemplate querying or criticising a moderator's acts - the sheer temerity of it! They've no time to deal with minutia, you know... 🙄 I remember; a couple of 202 Sqn's Mallard badges to use as templates for XV371's side ducks, and a Revell large dorsal radome for ZB506, and in return you sent me un-used items from the then-recent Airfix HC.4 and HAR.3 kits... ....I've since discovered that the nose marking on '371 - also worn by almost all Farnborough's helo fleet and always thought to represent the Pterodactyl atop the official RAE crest - was a Peking
  13. If memory serves, we conversed quite a bit in a thread where you were building a trio of test and trials Sea Kings - I think I even sent you a few bits and pieces... ....and then there was a 'falling out' after I criticised the actions of a mod, and another suspended me because I ignored his demand to apologise to the first one! 🤣
  14. If I recall correctly, there was a 'falling out' of some sort on BM, which resulted in Deb's account being suspended there...
  15. That site's sprue shots can be very useful - and the rulers they display aren't always necessary to work out sizes... ....eg., in this instance, I'd personally scale the pic on screen against a part from the 1/72 kit, such as a sponson end or drop tank, and then physically measure the FLIR parts - much simpler than enlarging to match the ruler and then doing the maths to 'scale down' to 1/72 from 1/48... ....either way you choose to do it, in this case, the pic at 81% of original size is 1/72 scale.
  16. This enlargeable sprue shot has a ruler visible which will enable you to scale it to obtain the measurements you're seeking, and also be able to ascertain the correct size and shape of the FLIR unit itself:
  17. I think he was asking which type the kit was marketed as...
  18. Yes, and yes - in 1/72 it was originally, of course, covered by Modeldecal: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/modeldecal-55-greenham-common-1979-raf-phantom-fgr2-alcock-and-brown-lightning-f3-ltf-hawk-t1-twu--155615 Microscale subsequently did it, and there was a Fujimi kit in the scheme too...
  19. I've no idea - simply found the clip, and thought I'd share it further...
  20. Thanks, gents - meanwhile, after my neighbour had very kindly fashioned me a base onto which the aforementioned fish-tank turned display case fits perfectly, I downloaded, printed and glued a parking apron on which to place the model, and it now sits on top of my 'stash' shelving unit:
  21. I don't know how many hours the Hercules fleet will have racked up when the last RAF sortie is finally flown - but I was lucky enough to fly in this specially-marked aircraft when one historic milestone was reached, 30 years ago:
  22. It had immediately struck me that both mertox's and rock55's posts seemed very odd first ones for brand-new members (less than a day) to make... ....I hadn't even considered the bot/chatGTP angle, though - my initial thought was also simply they might be spammers getting a foot in the door....
  23. Thanks, Ben - but it's the Revell/Italeri kit, not the Matchbox one... Thanks, Ray...
  24. My latest completed build - a Canadian Chinook - is now over in the 'Display Case': CH-147F Chinook - 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, CAF, 2017 - Revell 1/72 *If you know, you know!
