LEGO's NASA Apollo Saturn V - Real Space Modeling for Kids
kentak replied to spaceman's topic in Real Space Modeling
I had to wait until the 2nd run of this kit, but finally got one from Lego's online store. Unlike most Lego kits, there is relatively little of the normal brick pattern showing with this kit. The smooth parts are all smooth and it really looks like a Saturn V, not "low res brick pixel" model. A remarkable design effort. Regarding it's relevance to this modeling forum, I'd say that if you ever get a modeling block one of these kits can give you a break-through modeling experience. Just seeing how they could depict such an iconic shape with such detail using modular pieces is a real eye-opener. -
Reveal did a 1/48 Spirit of St Louis that's a fun build. Ken

The ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs
kentak replied to LanceB's topic in Sci-Fi Modeling
I bought one when it first came out and built right away. It was a bit pricey then and probably more so now, but worth every penny. Fine molds lives up to their name. Extremely detailed, well engineered and fun to build. If you can afford it's worth it. Great kit! Ken -
If you are talking about a robot model kit there are a number of them available. Polar Lights has a Robby the Robot kit that was in movies from the 50's and 60's. You might be able to find some of the Star Wars kits of R2D2 or C3PO.

I met an A-6 pilot out in Miramar in the 70's. I asked him what he flew and he just stuck his forefinger up on his forehead and I knew immediately! Ken

You might try dipping the "glass" in Future before putting the mask on it. Also scratches can be minimized by using toothpicks instead of a knife to remove the mask. You can also touch up scratches with additional Future. Ken

Another interesting look inside the modeling industry is the book, "Master Modeler, Creating the Tamiya Style" by Shunsaku Tamiya. It gives an interesting look at how decisions are made at Tamiya. It also talks a lot about the early days at Tamiya. It's a bit dated, 1997, but the descriptions of how Mr. Tamiya and his assistants measure German tanks in the early days is really enlightening and sheds a lot of light on how enthusiasts can create something special in the industry. The previous links also have a lot of that spirit and show what's behind two of today's most exciting model companies

Why are drawings regarded as the true depiction of a plane? Perhaps the original blueprints would be good references but aren't any other drawings a subjective interpretation of the proportions and shapes? Not trying to put down anyone's drawings; I'm just curious why the drawings are regarded as the standard. Ken

New F-1B rocket engine upgrades Apollo-era design

That IS rocket science! Ken -
There are several sources for Cragar mags. The AMT 65' Ford Galaxy has a nice set in 1/25 and MRC had/has? an aftermarket set in 1/24. The AMT Galaxy is supposed to re-released in Sept and may have those again. Ken

Can I tell you how **OVER** snow I am right now?
kentak replied to Jennings's topic in General Discussion
In Denver we're supposed to get a bit of rain and snow tonight to warp up the 12" we got from the latest storm and it's off to you easterners. Time to hunker down and build. Just remember to be sure to crack the windows a bit in your build-space to keep the fumes from accumulating! Ken -
I'm excited to see this coming! Currently the dollar is strong against the yen so the pricing could be good. Unfortunately I have no room to display these 1/32 kits when built and I'm running out of room to store them unbuilt! Ken

I was in Japan in summer, 2011. I got to several hobby shops in Okinawa and Kyoto. It was like being in a Wonderland roaming through the aisles and seeing kits of stuff that don't often get to the US. The hobby shops in Okinawa were small, but you felt that around any corner you might stumble upon a real treasure! When was the last time you had kits tied with string? The Joshins store in Kyoto was full of stuff! The hard part was remembering you have to carry your purchases on the bus or train! Great fun! Ken
