1/48 Hasegawa F-104G
nickdanger replied to nickdanger's topic in Missile With a Man In It Group Build
I see what you mean JayBee - when I do my TF-104G next year, I won't make the same mistake - thanks for the heads up. This one is already masked so I'm loathe to repaint.... -

Really? Must be pretty flat - I don't get any BMF look from the reference pictures I've seen. But thanks. At this stage with only a few weeks left, I think I'm stuck with my Medium Sea Grey, but I'll definitely try to match RAL 7012 and 6014 -

Canopies are masked: Major assemblies are done: Medium Sea Grey (or something like it) on the underside: Is there any reason that I shouldn't just use the same colors as my concurrent Whirlwind build? I was thinking that all the colors are pretty much the same, and had read somewhere that NATO adopted the later Grey/Green/Grey of the RAF. Is that true? -

Major assembly is done. Had to do a little smoothing on the nacelles. I'm using these for refs and wanted the nacelles to have that same smooth, panel free look. Also think I'll forgo the yellow on the leading edge of the wings as per the photos. Canopy is masked Time for pre-shading Bottom is painted with my version of Medium Sea Grey Next step, mask off the bottom and start with the camo -

Did a little Alclad in preparation for fuselage closure Drilled out nav/formation lights before closure as well - nice touch Hasegawa! -

Added some red for the radiator gauges in the cockpit Now the wings are on. Pretty happy with the wing roots. A little tweaked on the bottom/starboard side, but manageable Cut the elevators for some droopiness -

Cockpit is in and fuselage is closed: Still have some resin trimming to do on the bottom of the cockpit tub so the wings will fit nicely - still some resin dust in the pics: Being a noob with PE I couldn't bring myself to try and actually thread the harnesses through the buckles - too nerve wracking. Wing root fit looks to be tricky - sigh..... -

Cockpit is pretty much done. How detailed is the Aires cockpit set? Well you can read Lockheed on the rudder pedals! I decided since the resin tub w/o the side walls fits so perfectly to leave the sides off. With side walls: Without: The ejector seat is getting there. Lot's more harnesses, pull tabs, and other PE thingies to add. I've found a bunch of references that don't agree at on on colors for the Martin-Baker so I just went for it. Think I'll save the remainder for the very end of the build - ready to move on already. -

Got the cockpit painted and most of the fiddly bits assembled. Not used to so much resin and photoetch - definitely slows me down, but I'm liking the level of detail. Glad that Brett Green has already done this kit and so I'll probably use his same methodology for assembling the cockpit vis a vis the fuselage halves. -

A quick dry fit to get things rolling Never realized how much the Whirlwind looks like a glider w/o engine nacelles. Time to get cracking on the cockpit - much more resin and PE than I've dealt with before - we'll see how that goes. -
Yak is done. I used some spare decals from an after market kit which were for a Yak-7, but not the trainer version. Kinda bent the rules a bit I suppose, but at least the airframe is a legit trainer. Couldn't stand to see good decals go to waste. I didn't glue down the top engine cowling - the engine compartment isn't detailed but nice to be able to pop it off.

@Holmes - Yep. I tried to do the Luftwaffe paint scheme on the old monogram kit when I was a kid, and I've been wanting a rematch. -
I'll be adding the Aires cockpit but otherwise it will be OOB. Looking forward to Hasegawa's decals - definitely like theirs the best of all of the major manufacturers decals.

Welcome and Project announcement

Aloha from Hawaii, I'm in with the Hasegawa F-104G, done up in Luftwaffe colors -
Classic Airframes 1/48 Westland Whirlwind. I'm doing it in the later sea grey and green rather than the earlier brown and green camo scheme.
-
Got the Yak put together and started painting: Masked off for the second color Got black and green up top and blue underneath Time for decaling and weathering and fiddly bits.
-
Aloha from Hawaii, I'll be doing a Whirlwind as well, but the twin engined RAF fighter, not the helicopter.
-
Fuselage is closed up and engine is ready. Starting dry fitting of the wings. One side looks ok with a little bit of force applied via a pony tail holder. The other side will take a little bit more work...kinda big gap.

Some more pics of my finished Academy 1/48 P-38J Happy modeling and thanks for hosting and moderating Ryan.

All done. Quite an enjoyable build. I'll post some more pics in the completed thread.

Thanks Robert. Landing gear are on now And I flattened everything with Vallejo varnish I've done about as much weathering as I think is appropriate. I think flattening the whole plane was weathering in itself - the pictures I've seen of the South Pacific Lightnings look to me like the aluminum wasn't that shiny gloss that you see in BMF P-38's preserved today. That tropical sun took it's toll. Some fuel stains on the caps, and of course the turbosuperchargers Maybe add some dirt to the tires. Now just to add the ordnance, landing gear bay doors and other fiddly bits, canopy and ri

Been focused on my Dropping Iron GB entry P-38 but I've managed to get some work done on the Yak. Preshaded and futured cockpit and engine. Just a little more paint and assembly.

Decalling is all done (finally) and saved the best for last: The Sharkmouths were, not surprisingly the trickiest of the decals in terms of placement. The solvent still is doing it's magic in this picture. You have to paint the front of the intakes red since the decals don't cover that section. I can't seem to get the exact right shade, but it's pretty close. I think with a layer or three of Future, it'll look ok. On to weathering and final assembly.

So, I wasn't planning on doing the full complement of stencils but... Since I was raiding a half used after market decal set, all of the stencils were gone, plus the Academy kit doesn't really have a full set of stencils - Sure it come with the fuel tank red circles and a few more, but not down to the "Oil Cooler Drain", "Jack Here", and "Fillet Jt." details. And since I was in budget mode, no more after market goodies for this build. Then I remembered some left overs form the more than 4 decade old Monogram kit that I've built a couple times. Even though the kit is old, it's fantastic with
