  1. Oh well, not gonna make it. While it's still September 1st here at 157° west, it's getting late and I'd rather have a nice slow weathering and finishing stage than rush things through. Got the wheels and brakes assembled. Actually never done a kit with OOB brake lines. Looks pretty slick, IMHO. Most everything is ready for final construction Decided to remove the cracked underwing roundel kit decals and replace them with the Aces of the Empire ones. Vast improvement.
  2. Just noticed that Gabreski's Spit had the square rear view mirror: I had the hemispherical one all painted and ready to install, too.
  3. Getting really close but don't think I'll get it done before the end of the day. Pretty sure that September first will end last for me here in Hawai`i, in that I'm closest to the dateline on the eastern side so I'll keep plugging away....
  4. I had to do a double take on that picture of the antennae rigging! Looked like there were twice as many as expected until i realized that I was looking at their shadows! Nice work. They look great.
  5. Leading edge masked off to paint yellow: And after It's a little more lemon yellow than I'd like but it will darken with some Future and it will match the propeller tips
  6. Decals continue to suck. I'm really disappointed at how easily the kit decals crack. Both of the underwing roundels shattered into a bunch of pieces. Even the smaller stencils have a tendency to silver despite the fact that I've put down a couple layers of Future. Not surprisingly, the leading edge yellow stripes cracked when I tired to apply them, so like the propeller tips (below), I'll wind up having to mask them off and airbrush. A pain but way less frustrating than struggling with a bunch of decal fragments. I had been thinking that I would just use the kit decals for the markings
  7. Love those all grey Spitfires. The colors from the roundels really sets them off. Good luck getting it all done in the time remaining.
  8. I thought that the ICM kits came with different gun bay covers to allow for building a number of wing types....must be misremembering.
  9. Once the Spitfire GB wraps up, I'm in with the Hasegawa 1/48 F-104G with a special 25th Anniversary Luftwaffe scheme.
  10. Lot of Mediterranean Spitfire as we close up the GB. Nice!
  11. Looking good. I still have never done an Aboukir / Vokes equipped Spitfire. One of these days.
  12. Hmmmmm. Decals are a little cracky..... Granted there is a gun blister right there but I'm underwhelmed.
  13. Curious to see if you like the all black primer method. I'm liking it on the Tamiya.
  14. It's back ! Revell graciously sent me a replacement canopy after I fogged up my clear parts. Worth the wait. I'll throw some more pics in the completed thread.
  15. Back from a very busy time at work. The museum where I work just opened a new exhibit and I got to work on a 1/1 scale model ! We built a flight simulator that allows visitors to take part in the Battle of Midway. You can choose to fly either for the Japanese and attack the island or for the US Navy and attack the Japanese fleet. We really played down the game aspect - no "enemy" icons, radar, maps, or scores. Just a dizzying furball of action and explosions and you only have a couple minutes of fuel before you need to turn back for home. The only nod to gaming was unlimited ammo, though
  16. Wow. You're setting yourself up for a busy end of August. Good luck getting them finished.
  17. Next step of upper camo complete. Just the rear of the fuselage and tail section to go.
  18. Started in on the upper side camo I've taken to freehanding the first color and then going section by section for the final dark color. Good first step. The cowlings will be a trick though
  19. Been banging out some of the smaller detail parts: Time for overall painting. Not unlike the Eduard kit, if you follow the instructions you need to mask the exhaust stacks during the overall painting. As such I decided to only install the engine temporarily so that I could leave off the exhausts. To hold the cowling on I just stuffed some Uhu-tac (or blue tac to some) in the front. For this build I'll be trying something new to me. Rather than the classic and much debated preshade I've primed in all black and will go with more of post-shading and mottling. Before: During: After:
  20. As much as I'd love another Spit for the GB I'd have to say you should hold off. It's such a nice kit that it would be a shame to blast through, especially if the second half out August is already spoken for. Which reminds me I haven't update my build thread in a while....
  21. Nicely done. Are you still planning on doing the Tamiya 1/32? Only a little over a month till the end of the GB....
