  1. I'm in with a 1/48 Airfix Spitfire Mark Vb I'll be using decals from the 1/48 Aces of the Empire set from Victory (amazing set):
  2. Don't think that I'll be finishing before the deadline. Been busy at work and heading out on vacation tomorrow. Did manage to get a lot done thanks to the GB. Reassembled the main deck, adding LED's in the tunnels: Cockpit is installed: Two major tasks left. Get the fiber stuffed into the LED housings and come up with a grating for the rear exhaust. Think I might just by a 3D printed part. I've done enough scratchbuilding and figuring out how to make stuff fit and work. Time to make it easy on myself. Will definitely finish before Episode VII appears but July 1 ain't gonna happen.
  3. Masking bottom panels: In progress: Major painting is finished: Next on the agenda, solder two or three more general LED for landing lights and hallway illumination; plan the fiber optic LED circuits and solder.
  4. Rewired the landing lights in parallel and now everything is lighting up nicely: Looks good in darkness too: Need to finish the detail painting of the odd colored panels for the bottom before I close everything up.
  5. Maroon/red/rust panels are painted: Little bit of overspray. Should be fine after weathering. Did a first coat of Future to prepare for washes:
  6. Gray panels are done (at least on the top): Finished wiring the landing light LEDs and realized that I had forgotten everything from high school electronics class. Soldered them in in series and....it was supposed to be in parallel: Back to the drawing board on that aspect. Masked off the maroon top panels and added some liquid mask for weathering. We'll see if it looks good tomorrow:
  7. Dealing with small stuff: cockpit, gun turret, turbo cannon, etc Ran the fiber for the cockpit instruments: Glued into place Gun turret chairs are glued in Started soldering LED wiring: Prepping for final outside paint
  8. Woohoo! Mods have voted and the Spitfire GB is on the calendar ! March 1 - Septamber 1, 2016. Plenty of time to get your kits in order. If anybody would like to help out as co-host, I'd welcome the guidance/help. I've participated in enough GB's that I think I can figure out what to do, but as a noob I'm sure something will fall through the cracks. Suggestions for rules, offers of raffle prizes, and other forms of aid will be greatly appreciated.
  9. Some more scratchbuilding. The boarding ramp in the OOB model ends in a clear sheet of plastic and a view into the inside of the model. Bent some plastic sheeting and did a down and dirty paint job: Looks good enough when installed Trimmed down all of the now glued-in fiber: Quick fiber test....looking good:
  10. All fiber installed in the main cabin Quick test. Looking good. Fibers glued in with Elmers
  11. Landing lights and headlights are puttied in: Also did a quick fiber test with a red LED. The will be different colors in the end but just wanted to see....
  12. Started installing the landing lights. Used Squadron White Putty and (obviously) did't worry too much about the aethetics: Between the aluminum tubing jacket and the putty no light bleed at all ! Started pulling fiber through the holes.
  13. Thanks for the kind words! Working on a number of fronts: This version of the Falcon doesn't have anything in the gun turrets besides a seat hanging perpendicular to the turret window. Did a little scratchbuilding to jazz that up. Had to finish up the blackout of the interior to insure against light leaks Started to add holes in the fuselage for the headlights and landing lights Experimenting with aluminum tubing to jacket the LED's to protect against light leaks and make installation a little easier Some pics of recent work in these areas: Blackout/light leak protection Gun bay
  14. Just waiting on confirmation from the mods. Sounds like we've got some solid interest !
  15. Started drilling. Took apart the interior to make drilling easier. Testing different gauges of fiber. Firing up the LED Only dozens more holes to go Starting with the main deck since it's pretty open. The cockpit will be trickier.
  16. So I've only been modelling in my adult phase for just under 10 years. I built lots of planes and sci-fi models as a kid, but I can remember quite distinctly around age 12 or 13 trying to paint a YF-16 in red, white, and blue and being so disgusted by my hand painting that I gave up completely. After I fell back into model building, the clouds parted when I bought an airbrush and found ARC. Between the two, within a year I was turning out (IMHO) really nice models. Here's my first airbrushed model in my modern building phase back in 2007. I started the AMT/ERTL Millennium Falcon soon into
  17. Still May the Fourth here in Hawaiʻi and as the Star Wars GB closes, I'm jumping into the Shelf Queen GB with my one and only unfinished project. Honestly. I've seemed to avoided the stash bug and only have a few kits sitting in boxes at any one time. Think there are maybe five kits in my modest stash right now. Every other model I've blasted through even if it took a complete new paint job or ordering replacement parts. But this one, could never put in those last few hours/weeks/months. The AMT/ERTL Cut-away Millennium Falcon. Started the kit in 2007 and quit just a few weks in. Decided
  18. I'm going to try and finish my Millennium Falcon shelf queen that has been idle for 7 years awaiting a lighting solution. While lots of the interior computer/cockpit lights would look good as fiber, I'm thinking that lights such as the front "headlights" would be better off as straight LEDs. Is mixing and matching LED and fiber no big deal? I was going to pick up a combo packwith .25 up to 1mm fiber. Would I find all of those useful or should I focus on the smaller ones? Thanks for your insights. You're definitely the lighting master.
  19. Just curious what size/gauge/thickness of fiber you were using for the main fuselage windows.
  20. Granted 8 months is a little long (not unprecedented though). We could shorten to another anniversary earlier than January 1.... September 15 (1940) - Battle of Britain Day (though the Hurricane fanatics would be right to point out that their fav was more appropriate to celebrate on that day) August 4 (1938) - Entered service I'm just happy for the excuse to build my favorite plane along with some others.
  21. Well done. That red is bang-on.
  22. Oh THAT kind of Typhoon. Ok. That makes more sense.
