  1. Thanks Andrew, I was hoping you'd get a chance to chime in. That's a great blessing indeed to get to meet these heroes indeed!

What little I know I've picked up here and there from different sources. It was on the New Jersey's Youtube channel I'd heard the information that Admirals are allowed to chose their personal craft's colors. But the barge that the comment was made about was a much more modern time period that is still on board the New Jersey, I think Gulf War Admiral perhaps? So that may be a newer tradition that wasn't in place in the 30's- 40'e.

    Thanks again,

    Bill

  2. I'm actually a little surprised at how little information is out there on the color and location of all of the ship's boats of the Arizona during the Dec 7th attack. I realize I'm mainly sticking to "google" research and haven't shifted through a ton of documents, but really there's not a lot of information in general on Admiral's launches during the WWII period at all. I know I'll need to probably seek out more on a dedicated ship builders site. But I'll revisit this thread occasionally to see if more can be gathered here. Thanks again.

  3. I know there are several people here who are well versed on the Arizona history so hope you don't mind the question here instead of the ships threads. I ran across this photo in the In Action book and was curious about the boat in the foreground. It's clearly not the typical white top and appears to be very clean and ornate. If I understand, the group admiral was on board during the attack and I also have heard admirals are allowed to pick their personal boats color scheme and the Arizona was his flag ship. Is this this possibly his personal boat and it would have been on her deck at some point before the attack? And if so, does anyone know the color of this boat?

  4. WOW! I mean....WOW! Not sure I could say more than WOW right now. Unbelievably nice kit and you're doing a great job with it. I'd love to get one of these one day but man it's hard to justify spending quite so much at this time. But who knows in the future. You're certainly doing it justice.

Out and back for me.  4 of us are riding together to cut costs.

I always volunteer to Judge, local folks (IMO) are busy enough running the show and volunteering cuts their workload down.

I'll have three models in, but it's rare for me to win anything.

Seems like S.A. always has a pretty good showing at the SWAMP/Calmex show, Dick Montgomery and gang are some good people!

I know that, learned that 60 years ago when I started modeling. I do go against the grain at times, I had the dark blue but not the light blue. I already have scolded myself umpteen times but guess what? I do not listen to me so why would I listen to you!!! LOL Or as Popeye says-I yam whats I yam.

Yup. I've very very many times did something the whole time saying "I really shouldn't do it this way, I really shouldn't do it this way...." Hope I didn't offend.

  7. Great show! I used to be a member of SWAMP but moved away a little. Probably going to be there. It's a new venue they are hosting at, I believe this is just the second year in the Sulphur location but it's still really good. And yes it's true, the membership is very small so they rely on volunteers from other clubs to help judging. In my opinion, that is part of what makes it a good show as well. I do however miss the gumbo they used to be able to sell at the other venue. Highly recommended. Go the full weekend and you can go catch the Thunderbirds at the Airshow in Lake Charles on Sunday.

  8. looks really great Jon! I think some light detergent and warm water washing with a aoft swab should do it. Tamiya lacquar is pretty robust so I think you'd be safe.

BTW, just for future reference, and I know everyone has their favorite technique for multi-color paint jobs. But personally If I were doing this color scheme I think I would paint the entire body the light blue color first, let that dry really well and then mask and paint the dark blue. In my opinion it makes it much easier to match up the color break. But regardless, you did an awesome job!

    1/24

umm...unless I'm mistaken, or there is another MPC kit I'm not aware of, the figure and speeder bike are much larger than 1/24. Or at least the kit I had some 30 years ago was bigger. I THINK they are pretty close to the scale of the Bandai but not exactly the same.

I’m obviously not Dave, but I have an Anycubic M3 Plus and a Mars 3 Pro. As pertaining to model parts, I see very little difference.

The Anycubic is a bit less flashy, not having an air filter and the optional camera and WiFi have never worked. But never had much issue printing.

The Elegoo is a bit more polished package, but OOB prints failed until I tightened the FEP…not an issue to a seasoned resin printer person, but could have been hard to figure out what is going on to a newbie.

The prints appear ever so slightly better on the Mars 3, but of no relevant difference on any model part I’ve printed.

What Spaznek said! 😄 The only printer I've owned other than the Elegoo has been the Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K and I hated it. My failure rate using the Elegoo printers has been about 5% going back two + years. My failure rate on the Phrozen was about 50% no matter what I changed. Finally dumped it for a quarter what I paid for it.

I honestly don't think I'll ever get anything other than Elegoo printers moving forward.

    Thanks guys.

I'm really looking forward to seeing where the newer DLP technology goes. I like the ides of not having to replace an LCD screen and it's a little less of a consumable. Hopefully the sizes and prices of those printers will start to come down.

Okay, things are still a bit crazy, but I can piece meal this together over the next few days.

For starters, I would highly recommend the Elegoo Mars 3. It is a 4K printer that gives outstanding results and is currently the best bang for the buck. I currently have 7 of them and will be getting 3 more once we move into a new house and everything settles down. At the current price of $208, you really can't go wrong. Easy to level, easy to clean, easy to use and extra parts (LCD screen, build plates, vats) are readily available. 95% of the parts in my line are produced on this printer.

There is a user group on Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/groups/343429203114378 and there are dozens of videos on YouTube. I'll post more in a day or so.

Hey Dave, I have an Anycubic Mono X and am thinking of getting a smaller printer to handle smaller items. Have you ever had a chance to compare working with Elogoo vs Anycubic? It's all I've ever known so am leery going outside my comfort. BUT if the quality is there, it's there.

  12. Zimpter's Hobby's back in 1974-ish. Nice small shop with a lot of diorama's decorating the front windows. But what I remember more than that was it used to be you could go to JC Penney and they had 3 full aisles of models. And not like the basic stuff you find at Hobby Lobby now days, but huge selections of Tamiya, Hasegawa, Fujimi, etc... as well as your typical Monogram and Revell stuff. Tanks, Planes, Ships, Cars....what would be considered a very well stocked hobby shop today. Heck, you could buy most any Monogram kit at some grocery stores. The golden age in my opinion.
