  1. according to the description, it's a plastic model that needs assembly and painting, so i don't think it's preassembled. it could be something new......wouldn't that be great! :) Bill edit: but according to this site, it is prepainted and no glue. hmmmm.. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10067119 well, maybe it will be something worth getting, but who knows.
  2. AWESOME work! great job on the ejection seat. I can't wait to see how this one turns out. I don't think i'm brave enough to tackle sculpting a figure that size from pretty much scratch like that. you are a bigger man than i! Keep the posts coming.
  3. Beautiful work. great composition and wonderful sense of atmosphere. i can just hear that loud radial engine echoing around the field. question, is this strictly prismacolor or did you use any paint in conjunction? the reason i ask is the smoothness you've achieved. I have heard of some people using a solvent to give the prismacolors more of a paint look, did you do any thing such as that? just curious. Bill
  4. thanks guys. this is the look i'm going for. it's very delicate looking that's why i thought maybe leafing. i had some at the house anyway, so i may test it on something and see, maybe i can get it work for me.
  5. I can see already this is going to be a great build. a lot of challenges, but that's what makes it fun right. keep up the good work and post your progress. sorry i can't help you with the milliput question, i've never actually used it either. if i understand right, it is able to be cut and filed after it sets, but it's probably best to get as close to the finished shape as you can to make the cleanup that much easier. keep em coming. Bill
  6. i see your point about it flaking off easily. maybe i could come up with a way to use both. use the leaf for the "chipped paint" look as you put it, which the capsule has alot of that, and then use little amounts of foil for the shreaded hanging pieces. I guess i'll just experiment til i get what i want. Thanks for all ya'lls help. Bill
  7. As the topic asks, has anyone tried using gold or silver leaf on a model? I'm build an Apollo recovery dio and want that torn up shreded foil look that it has. I think barefoil or aluminum foil would be too hard to get the look i want. my plan is to spray the adhesive in the spots and pattern i want and then apply the leafing. but then i need to airbrush the weathered effect over that. So can it be done? Or anyone with a better idea? the other effect i like is that some of the edges of the foil are actually pealed away from the capsule. Thanks Bill
  8. Thanks for the kind words. as for the top of the hatch, i'm looking for the right shaped object to glue on top of what is there so the bottle won't really be seen. The shape i'm looking for is a shallow cone-ish pie plate like disc. the top of the kit doesn't look quit right, but it's hard to find a straight head on photo of what that hatch looks like without the docking mechanism over it so they may have it right. as you can see, i'm jumping all over the place on the build. i'll work on the top, run into a wall and then go back to the interior.....big wall (instrument panel) then focus on t
  9. somewhere in my stash i have a photo-etch instrument panel. I believe it was from a true details p.e. set....which ever set had the resin galley and what not. I wasn't planning on using it, so if you are interested let me know. from what i remember, it's a nice looking piece....that will mostly never be seen by anyone but the builder, but you'd know it's there. <_< Bill
  10. I guess I've actually been posting these pictures in the wrong place, this is where I should be putting them. So I'll pick up the build here and show where i am. I have the floatation ring formed up. I decided to use 1/2" diameter plastic tubing cut into .813" segments. I pretty much guessed at the size and number of the segments and layed it out in Autocad. That gave me the shape i needed to cut in plastic. I am thinking about coating the whole ring in something to smooth is all out and give it that rubber ring look. My two choices so far are either dipping it in latex enamel house paint and
  11. i've used them a bit and they seem to work fine. i have to admit i haven't compared them as far as price to other sheets, there may be (probably is) something cheaper that works, but the testors sheet are available at Hobby Lobby, so i use them. if i understand right, when making decals, the thickness and quality of the clear coat on top has alot to do with the quality of the decal as well. as long as the paper accepts inks accurately with minimal seapage, the top coat determines how well it lays down. I could be totally wrong about that, but that's what i was told. Bill
  12. Hey guys, just a small update on what little progress i've made. i've done a bit more detailing in the cabin area. i'm still not sure how far i want to take the detailing. for sure i want get most of what can be seen through the open hatch. i have some places detailed now that won't really be seen, but it's hard to stop sometimes The instrument panel is my next main concern along with the detail on the top of the capsule. i first thought i would print up a more accurate decal and use that for the I.P., but quickly realized it will be the most seen object inside thru the hatch, so it
  13. another approach to high gloss finishes is what alot of the car guys use. there are several sanding/polishing systems that have sanding clothes ranging from about 800 grit up to around 12,000. you start with the roughest and slowly work up to the 12,000. then polish with a cloth and some polishing compound. the major drawback is having to lay down a slightly thicker coat of paint, which on aircraft can really mess up surface detail. but if you go too thin you can "burn-thru" to plastic pretty easily. so as with any technique, like they said, practice. but with these systems you can make some v
  14. NICE! i have to admit, i'd never heard of the black knights. interesting paint scheme, although i was hoping to see some darth vadar-ish black f-16s.....that would be cool. has anyone here seen them in person? i'd be interested in catching one of their shows. Bill
  15. Keith I have a buddy that makes custom helmets for the local high schools and such. I know he orders his decals from a company that specializes in thick stickers just like that. They are more of a thick "rubbery" sticker, very strong and stretchy so they can take hits. I'll have to ask what the company's name is and get back with you. he also does some of the local teams full sized helmets so it's definately the stuff made for helmets. when he orders them, they come on a sheet but they are pre-cut. the only problem with this company is i believe he has a minimum amount he has to order. You
  16. Awesome job man! I like the color scheme and i tell you what, i for one would be scared to death to ride that sucker. If I'm looking at it right, you'd be airborne pretty quick. Very imaginative. Keep em coming. Bill
  17. Hey guys, I'm trying to find some pics of an F-4e i saw quite a while back. it was an E model phantom with a WW tail code. I believe it was with the 562nd TFW. do any of you have photos of one and more specifically the badge on the intake? I looked thru the f-4 thread, but after about page 10 my eyes started blurring so i figure i'd just ask. Thanks, Bill BTW, it was in the Hill scheme.
  18. am i seeing that right? it looks like there are cockpits both front and rear. probably a movie prop but really cool looking design.
  19. i've seen a 1/32 scale p-51 race plane with this technique. it was really cool. illustrators used that effect before the age of computers, back in the good days when airbrush was king in the illustration world. Bill
  20. not to sound like a cynic, but i seriously doubt if the show were pulling in the ratings, that the Sci-Fi channel would tell them they can end it whenever they want to. I believe money talks. The ratings are down, so they are going to pull it. All of the Star Gate spin-offs are proof, network execs will run anything in to the ground trying to get every last dollar they can out of it, then just chunk it by the way side. It's the show business way. JMHO. Bill
  21. of course that was my next theory. as i said, i'm FAR from being an expert.
  22. i am FAR from being an expert, but to me it looks kinda like a tank off of a super hornet. can anyone confirm or deny that statement? at least it looks like the tanks that are in my hasegawa f-18f model. i would imagine it is possible to put them on legacy hornets. just my theory, but if it is, you should be able to use one from a super hornet kit. Bill
  23. you know the cool thing about that pic? to me, it looks more camo'd than a clean hornet! i mean look at it, it really blends in pretty well to the ground. maybe the navy should look into just burying their aircraft for a month or so before putting them into service. it could be the "Camouflaged Realistic Aircraft Program" I think my next hornet will incorporate the new C-R-A-P scheme.
  24. NOT THE TITANIC!!!! geeesh, next thing you know, the Hindenberg may encounter some difficulties.
  25. ok, what's the record for the oldest thread brought back to life? we may have a contender here. i for one, as much as i was disappointed with the last season BSG, i would hate to see it go. they have to potential to really rock, they just need better writing in my opinion. Bill
