Murph has thousands of hours flying fast jets, including the F-15. He isn’t an armchair pilot. And given the number of videos of this incident, there are some very obvious errors. These powerful tools (video/images) will be used in the investigation.

His hours of service flying fast jets is very much appreciated and I respect his experience. But that fact also makes his statement all the more disappointing. Unless he was there in the situation, I feel most pilots would rather hold out posting such an opinion on a public forum before any facts are known and not knowingly or unwittingly tarnish the names of others in the profession. It's one to thing to make a general supposition such as "It appears this may be a pilot error from what's seen so far" Or "Perhaps X, Y, Z didn't happen...." etc. But to make a blanket statement such as it's just some rich "egos" with no brains is uncalled for in my opinion. But of course he's free to make whatever judgement he feels is appropriate. I know I've made mine about his statement and stand by it.

Some of the individuals flying these "warbirds" have no business being in a cockpit.  Way more money and ego than brains.

Sorry, but this is an extremely judgmental and VERY ignorant statement. These "individuals" are trained pilots with tons of hours. How about you keep the armchair piloting to yourself.

  3. Incredible work! Your prints are turning out perfect. i made some blades kind of similar to those for my Millennium Falcon model and had the same issue. What I finally ended up doing was using a thin cutting wheel in a rotary tool and cutting the supports at the raft at a slow speed and then breaking off like you did. Might be a bit faster for ya one the next one.

I'm just blown away by this project.

  4. I'm gonna have to go with the "it depends" answer. True, a good number of parts on the market now are being produced by liquid resin 3d printers, but that's still not always the case. Shapeways does offer parts that are still supported with wax and while yes they do say they "clean" the parts before shipping, as many can attests, their cleaning process isn't always so complete and the dreaded "wax ghost frost" still can pop up. I'd recommend getting in contact with who ever sold you the parts and finding out for sure what processes were used to print them. Also, even some FDM prints of certain filaments I find are left with a slightly filmy texture that needs a good cleaning and/or sanding before painting. But yes, resin parts you buy should have been pre-cleaned and fully cured.

  5. Very interesting question. I wonder if the change in tension occurred when they switched to Super Hornets. Which also could account for the looser formations. Bigger planes, not quite as agile, etc....  But I would like to hear the real answer.

  6. Wow, beautiful work there! It's not my cup of tea subject-wise, but man it's awesome enough to make me consider that genre. Nice colors and the metallics are gorgeous.

    Thanks for posting!

  7. "You built that? You're braver than I thought!"🙂

Nice job on that hunk of junk. It would be interesting to see a smashup build with a star ship and this as it's saucer section. Might throw fans of both series in to convulsions, but would be pretty cool.

I need space. currently, working with this:

I want room for instructions, spreading out sprues, and for foil. Now, I find myself with zero space, and it really causes problems.

Great ideas, folks! I like the paint arrangement. Something like a Lazy Susan with racks around the outside sounds good.

Not completely about space arrangement, but sort of. One of the things I started doing with instructions is taking cell pics of them and then viewing on a tablet instead of keeping the paper at my desk. It's neater, takes up less room and you can zoom in and out as needed. (important for older eyes like mine) I've been meaning to get a swivel arm tablet/computer monitor mount above my desk for it as well to help keep it out of the way when I don't need, but ready for access. Also good for keeping reference photos close by to look at.

Nice looking are you got to work with for sure!

  9. I watched the new trailer and am a little less excited about it now. Not sure, just something about it is looking more over the top with some of the effects. Sure, I'll probably go see it because ANY chance to see real fighter jets on the big screen is worth checking out. But a lot of the scenes in the new trailer are just a little too hard to believe. (under the bridge, really had to do that cliche'?) Just my take.

I've actually given this a bit of thought myself and have even gone as far as to do a preliminary drawing or two.  The core stage is roughly 4.6" in diameter at 1/72nd scale, so a piece 4" PVC might work in place of that, although the OD is slightly smaller at 4.5".  You could get a piece of 4.75" Plastruct tubing and split and reduce the diameter down to 4.6".  The SRBs are a section longer too, so you'd need to extend them a bit.  Maybe two shuttle stack kits ... or just scratch them with your 3D parts and some 2" diameter tube.

Totally doable, and since there's actual hardware now ... I'm thinking it should absolutely be done.

Isn't the Shuttle ET and the SLS main core the same diameter or am I mistaken?

  11. Many years ago someone at our local club contest entered 2 Halo figures. They were really large, maybe 1/6 scale perhaps? I doubt they were 3D printed as this was maybe 10 years ago. I would guess resin kits. but they were really well done. I'll have to dig to see if I can find the pics I took of them.

My 72ns scale SRB aft skirts came today. All I can say is WOW!

    Cheers....Ron

Glad to hear they came out well. If you get a chance, I'd love to see an image of them since I've made the change. It was a fairly minor change to some edge thicknesses to fit within print parameters but I have no idea how they'll turn out.

    Thanks,

    Bill
