  1. I purchased the Academy 1/144 B-52D kit very recently and it looks to be identical to the earler Minicraft B-52D/F offering, it also includes Quails and Hound Dogs (plus stands) although they don't apply to the B-52D options that can be made from this kit which include 'Tommy's Tigator'. The kit looks good to me however on seeing the options available on the forthcoming Caracal 'Tall Tails' sheet a second kit might be a good idea 😉

  2. Kursad, is this what you are looking for? Another sectioned BUFF from my 7th October 1994 AMARC tour. I did catch this chopped up B-52D forward fuselage however I was not able to identify her. The tail fin behind her cockpit belongs to 55-0087. Michael.

I am going to release a slightly reorganized and improved version of the CD48202 stenciling/national insignia sheet as a Basics item sometime in the next couple of months, so you can build multiple options from this and other F-104 sheets I offer.

I have several old ESCI and Monogram Starfighters in 1/48th scale as well as quite a few of the Hasegawa offerings, they are all crying out for several stencilling/national insignia Basics item sheets 👍

I built an ESCI F-104C just over a year ago and it was hard work resourcing some of the decals from the spares tin to replace the 40 year old kit decals.

  4. Just out of interest I have some of the old Revell 'History Makers' kits and some later 'Revell Classics'.

The 1/32nd Northrop Hawk is interesting, did it really go into the field in red and white markings? An earlier boxing suggests that they were plain white with no markings.

If you do issue this decal sheet I will definitely be purchasing one!

I am doing an Early Years sheet - it just will take some time.

This is good news. The HobbyBoss 1/48th scale F-111A kit comes with decals for the fifth prototype 63-9770 in FS 36440 grey and FS 17875 white and I built this version about eight years ago. The kit decals were sort of 'OK' and the end result looked good however it would look much better re-done with decals up to the Caracal standard. I can wait 🙂

I guess for me I’m impartial to low viz schemes.

I remember taking this photo, was literally a couple of weeks before the type was finally retired, and for that reason I am very partial to lo viz schemes too. Still hoping that one day someone will produce an RF-8G in 1/48th scale as well...

Thanks Chris.  I knew that I could rely on you for a close up of the 97th tail flash. BTW, this also appeared on the 97th KC-135As in the Shamu scheme, so the artwork can serve double duty.

This was a 97th BW KC-135A serial 64-14834 in the 'Shamu' scheme with 'Ridge Runner' art in the static display at the 1989 International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford. Tail flash looks very similar.

  8. +1 👍 for the German Luftwaffe Tornado request. One of my current builds is a Revell Tornado IDS in 1/48th scale in the Norm 83 camouflage scheme operated by JbG 37 out of Memmingen in 1991. There is very little out there for the Luftwaffe Tornado IDS and I have had to resort to using an old Italeri decal sheet that I had in my spares box for this scheme. Caracal Models did release a Luftwaffe F-4F in "Norm 81" which was excellent (I have a copy) so maybe the Tornado IDS could follow this? Whilst on the Tornado, how about a "Tornado The Early Years" sheet? I recall a red and white prototype followed by representative first aircraft for the German, British and Italian air forces.

  9. The 1/72nd sheet is a 'must' for me, I have mostly built the 2007 issue Revell B-1B however the Revell decal sheet looks good but the wing walk stripes were the wrong colour and silvered badly when I applied them; I stopped at that point. Advance order going into Hannants for when they list this sheet.

  10. The 1/72 KC-135A, C-135 Family General Markings, and 1/48 USAF SEA Heritage Camo F-16C / A-10C decal sheets arrived this week from re-seller Hannants in the UK. All very comprehensive, especially the C-135 Family General Markings which are impressive, however the SEA Heritage Camo F-16C is definitely a must-build-soon sheet!

  11. I am currently building the HobbyBoss 1/47th TA-7C kit and have painted and marked it as an EA-7L operated by VAQ-34 in the all-over Dark Ghost Gray colour scheme with lo-vis markings, plus red crew names, VAQ-34 in red and a red star on the fin, using Caracal decals. Still have to add some weathering and grime, it looks like the EA-7Ls got pretty worn and grubby in their later years.

I am not sure what to hang on the jet though. It seems that the EA-7L could carry the ALQ-170, AST-4, DLQ-3, ALQ-167, and ALE-43 chaff pods however these are quite exotic items due to the specialist role performed by the EA-7L and don't appear in the Hasegawa weapons sets or in my scrap bin! I might be able to fashion an AST-4 pod but I am an assembler, not a scratch builder. I have looked at builds by other modellers and they suggest that I could add an ALQ-119, an AN/APX-95, fuel tanks (but not the HobbyBoss ones!) and a blue AIM-7D.

I'm just thinking out aloud I guess, the model would look better with external stores of some sort, is there anything else that I can add which is easily sourced?

    Thanks. Michael

  12. A 'CC' coded F-111D from the 27th TFW in FS 36118 would be a must have for me. I don't know if any of these wore flagship markings either for the Wing or each squadron with a white outlined 'CC' though. A quick Google search found F-111F 70-2404 in FS 36118 operated by the 523rd FS in such markings so that could be worth considering maybe?

The option of a 366th TFW F-111F out of Mountain Home AFB would also be most welcome, whether a line bird or a flagship.

  13. Agree that this is a very subjective list however keeping with the OP's definition of "WOW OMG cool" my personal top 10 would be:

B-58A Hustler - a Convair delta wing, four podded engines, Mach 2, wasp waist... my dream plane when I was a teenager 😍

SR-71 Blackbird - needs no introduction!

XB-70 Valkyrie - I was 11 when that crash happened. Saw the other one outside the USAF Museum many years later, incredible plane.

F-104 Starfighter - especially the early F-104A models in highly polished metal with colourful bright markings. Pure fifties!

C-141A Starlifter - such blended curves, it just looked right especially in grey / white livery.

Constellation - civil or military, the most graceful and iconic of the classic propliners.

Victor - way ahead of its time with that weird fuselage, crescent wing and Kuchemann carrot fairings.

F-4 Phantom - saw my first F-4K in 1970, it went straight up in burner and literally bored a hole through the cloud.

F-111 'Vark - there is just something about swing-wings and the 'Vark had lots of that something.

F-8 Crusader - for me, the iconic U.S. Navy fighter of the Vietnam war.

So many missing though, can I choose 10 more? 😉

  14. Mine arrived today from Hannants, the re-seller based in the UK. An absolute work of art, up there with the Caracal B-58 decals that were released a few years ago. Now I know why I have kept a Hasegawa B-47 kit in the stash for upwards of 40 years! Thank you for option 3 B-47E 52-0344 which was deployed to the UK in 1959.

Apologies, Michael - this was an image opened directly from the search engine page without actually going through Flickr itself...

....something I do fairly often, as it's simply quicker than navigating through two or sometimes more pages at photo hosting sites...

....regarding what you've interpreted to be a 'Saltire' on the nose gear door, I believe that's just the standard marking alongside the 'Tire Pressure' info - as seen very well in one of the close-up RH-53D pics on the previous page...

No apology needed, just marking my copyright 🙂 I remember posting this image on a Facebook group and I pointed out the "saltire" and had no replies so a standard marking it most likely is 👍

I suspected three sheets might be pushing it a bit...

....a caveat regarding the VC-1 aircraft; the pic of the pair (153707 UA-02 and 153712 UA-03) shows markings on and around the crew entry doors - below are the only other decent photos that I've located of either of them, and whilst the full-size versions enable some of the wording to be read, most of it can't. I believe aft of the door it says 'Helo Crew Final Tour 1991', with a list of names beneath:

For the record I would like to claim copyright of this photo of 153712 / UA-03 which was taken by myself, Michael Baldock, on a tour of AMARC on October 9th, 1994. Always delighted if my photos help Kursad design stuff but I do like photo credit please. Interesting point, if you look very carefully at the nose gear door it appears to have a small Scottish flag, or Saltire, painted on it. If it is helpful I am happy to scan this negative again to show more detail. Michael aka 'Ghostbase'

  17. I have had a Hasegawa B-47E Stratojet in the stash since the late 70's, at last a set of decals which will motivate me to build it! Send some to Hannants please 😉

So many superb subjects from Caracal recently and in the months to come 👍

  18. 1/48 Vought RF-8A/G Crusader 👍 +1

The early jet powered bombers are also an area of interest for me. The Douglas XB-43 Jetmaster, the Convair XB-46 and the Martin XB-48 prototypes, I would love to see these in 1/72 scale much like the Valom B-45 kits. An updated 1/72 B-47 Stratojet would be a 'must buy' for me too.
