  1. The photo of the Loring Moose on the fin of 58-0195 above was taken by me at RAF Fairford in July 1989. The artwork carried was 'Eternal Guardian'. I recall that there was a KC-135 tanker there as well which had a similar moose illustration on her fin but 'Loring' and the state outline were in red. Michael
  2. This is an interesting sheet and gives more options than have previously been produced. The addition of the 1/32nd QF-4E below makes it a 'must have' for me.
  3. Over the years here in Europe there have been quite a few re-issues of the 1/48th Revell/Monogram F-105F/G kit always with different decal options. There were two versions released in 2007; #6868 F-105F 63-8299 which had a GA ANG 116th TFG 'Peach 91' final flight scheme 28th May 1983, also a George AFB 'WW' coded 35th TFW / 562nd TFS F-105G serial 63-8320 'Hanoi Hustler' 25th April 1980. Kit 04504 was released the same year with no less than five decal options on a huge and detailed sheet quoted as follows: F-105G '62-434' WW 35th TFW / 562nd TFS based at George AFB Jun
  4. Completely agree with the comments above regarding the inclusion of Combat Lancer and Constant Guard/Linebacker II birds. I did build the F-111A a year or two back in the grey/white colour scheme and it looks superb. How about 63-9775 which was used for cold weather trials, it had a red horizontal band on the tail fin and wore the AFSC badge on the left side of the forward fuselage, and an ASD badge on the right. Personally I have a soft spot for the 366th TFW based at Mountain Home with the MO code, SuperScale did release a decal sheet aeons ago containing 'Spirit of
  5. Noted on the tail fin of the B-47E preserved at Plattsburgh. There was an FB-111A on display here as well, when I saw it in 2010 it had virtually no markings.
  6. Some photos of the Boeing B-47E Stratojet 53-2385 which was on display at the former Plattsburgh AFB in 2010. I would say all standard markings are original. The tail fin band and the 380 BMW 'apple' were probably added much later. I suspect that her name "The Pride of the Adirondacks" was also added whilst on display which is a shame, if they had been added for a retirement ceremony then maybe they would be worth considering. Michael
  7. As a British scale modeller I would love to see one of the Stratojets marked for the "Reflex Action" deployments of the early 60's at bases such as RAF Greenham Common and RAF Brize Norton amongst others. My fave would be B-47E 0-32415 marked as "City of Plattsburgh II" and showing the 'last three' 415 on the fin in additional large numbers. Apparently this 'last three' was unique to the 380th BW/SAW. Photo on p.143 of Lindsay Peacock's Boeing B-47 Stratojet (Osprey Air Combat). A million years ago Super Scale International produced a decal sheet with the 1000th Boeing Statojet mar
  8. Same for me, I have been wanting to build a QF-4E Heritage jet in 1/48th for a while, however markings for one in 1/32nd is just *perfect* for the old Revell kit I have had in the stash for years. Thanks Jake
  9. Thanks Henk, I really cannot remember where I got that information so your update appreciated. I have posted a comment under the photo to put it right. Michael
  10. I am the photographer who took that photo 23 years back in 1988 Still remember it like it was yesterday! It was a dull cloudy day and I spent several hours standing by the side of the road taking photos of Tomcats, Scooters, Buckeyes, F-16N, Vikings, Phantoms, Intruders, even a TC-4C Academe! Sadly few of the photos came out well but it certainly was an experience as I am English, it was only my second US visit and I had never seen so many fabulous Navy aircraft! I could not drive back then and had travelled overnight on a Greyhound bus from Atlanta and I was absolutely exhausted. If you c
  11. I live in the UK and I have both kits in my stash thanks to a visit to the USA later last year just after the Monogram F-4C arrived in some model shops there. Both kits look identical to me. I have made several since the late 80's and I think that they are superb value, however I note that the US Monogram kit is 'Made in China' while the Revell Germany kit is 'Made in Poland so presumably they come from different moulds? I have not used the decals from either kit, instead using some old Microscale decals to denote an AFRES 89th TFS 'Rhinos' F-4D in a Europe One camouflage scheme. My observa
  12. Thanks for the help Clearly a lot of possible schemes to choose from, surprising considering just how few of these aircraft there were. Michael
  13. A question regards painting the Martin RB-57E 'Patricia Lynn' version of the Airfix 1/48th scale kit. One of the three kit colour options is for the Martin RB-57E 'Patricia Lynn' which was operated by the 6250th Combat Support Group, 2nd Air Division out of Tan Son Nhut, Vietnam, in 1963. The serial number of the aircraft is 55-4243. Would this aircraft have been in natural metal finish or was it painted in some sort of aluminium lacquer (much like the F-105D Thuds of the same era)? There is a large photo of 55-4243 in Robert C Mikesh's excellent book 'B-57 Canberra At War 1964-1972' and lo
  14. Well, in the bad old days before specialised modelling products I used to use straight forward gloss varnish (made by Humbrol here in the UK) and have to say it worked well. The trick was to brush it onto the back of the foil to be applied to the model and place it in the correct place when it was 'sticky' ie not wet but not yet dry. It was a tricky technique but very successful when you got it right. Nowadays I use Microscale Metal Foil Adhesive which is a bit more flexible and forgiving. I have one bottle which I purchased a couple of years ago from a model shop located just outside the mai
  15. Such an interesting technique, it is indeed like looking at ghosts from the past, very evocative and so powerful. More so that the people shown in them are most likely long departed from this world. My late father served with the Royal Air Force in Germany in 1946-47 and I have a couple of albums of photos taken by him. He took several photos from a train transiting Hamburg and the destruction caused by carpet bombing has to be seen to be believed. It would be interesting to use the same technique on those except I have no idea where they were taken! There was a UK magazine called 'After the
  16. I have been tinkering with foil on and off for the last 30 years and have never got anywhere close to this, Peter's work is an inspiration to me The Monogram Hun has raised panel lines which I personally think aids the application of foil, would be interesting to hear Peter's view on this. As for the application of the shiny side of the foil topside, very unusual and the results are simply stunning! Thank you Peter, I am determined that one day I will catch you up. Michael aka 'Ghostbase'
  17. That looks very nice Mike, *very* brave to try that in foil in 1/72nd scale IMHO I remember the Italeri kit well, there was the B-66B kit which you have made with two decal versions, and an EB-66 version which was available in several S.E. Asia camouflage schemes. IIRC it was at the time a good kit to make and I tried both, sadly neither survive now however I do have an Italeri B-66B minus decals and instructions in the stash. Trojan Thunder, I am 99.99% sure this kit has engraved panel lines. Mike, a few questions... 1) Did you use regular kitchen aluminium foil for this kit? 2) How did
  18. Many thanks for the replies and help on this one, much appreciated. The Virgina ANG 'Thud' referred to by Slartiblartfast Byrd Thud on Pole is very interesting, I suspect they just had grey paint to spare at the time! Michael
  19. One of the many modelling projects I have in mind is the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. Being a prolific Century Series hoarder I have several Revellogram 1/48th F-105F/G kits in the stash as well as one F-105D and I am interested to know what options exist for making an ADC grey painted 'Thud'. I have seen two such 'Thuds' during my various visits to the USA: Camp Robinson AR: Camp Robinson Thud Denver Lowry CO: Denver Lowry Thud In my opinion the Camp Robinson 'Thud' wears a spurious colour scheme, to the best of my knowledge the AR ANG never operated the 'Thud' and this scheme is at best
  20. Yes, very swiftly resolved indeed, credit for that to the IPMS UK SIG concerned. Michael
  21. Good idea on the caveat! Have to say that I am very surprised at a reputable organisation such as the IPMS UK posting copyrighted photos on their webpages, providing a download function as well is just plain cheek! Oh well, going to take it up with them direct :) Michael Edit: Linky to a better full size photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/B...ress/0658290/L/
  22. Can only agree with you 100%! :) I did a quick search on ARC for 'Peter Doll' and uncovered a whole plethora of his natural metal aircraft on this site, very inspiring indeed. I first started using foil back in the late 70's and had some successes, also a lot of failures. Way back then there was very little available in natural metal finish and am encouraged to learn that Peter uses the same adhesive techniques that I used to way back then (Humbrol gloss varnish in my case). More recently I have tried using aluminium kitchen foil and Microscale Micro Metal Foil adhesive on the wings of a 1/
  23. I have had a go at building the 1/48th Esci F-100D recently and it is still not finished because I have had just so many issues with it. The format of the kit is conventional: two fuselage side halves, simple upper/lower part wings with clunky flaps to add, single-piece tailplanes, two-piece vertical tailplane plus rudder. Instructions and decals ok bearing they date back to the late 70's. There are three aspects of this kit which really are bad and will test your modelling skills: 1) The fuselage forward of the cockpit is formed from five parts and quite simply these do not fit together pr
  24. Hi Hitch, Absolutely no offense was taken, that was why I tried to take a more light-hearted approach to the matter. I am happy for the photo to remain on the forum. And I really do wish there were more photos around of these very rare Voodoos as I have the 1/48th Monogram kit in my 'stash' and I would not part with it for love nor money! Michael
