  1. So, got the kit today. I'm going with the Kinetic block 25/42 kit as it was the only one Spruebrothers had in stock. I'm hoping to get started on it this weekend. I'm going to go mostly box stock, but with the addition of the quinta cockpit set.

  4. Howdy folks. I'm building this for a friend, who specializes in display models. He's great at painting big airliner stuff on stands, but he preferred to ask me to build this one for him. I searched everywhere for 3D interior decals for the Mk IXc, but they were all out of stock - both Quinta and Red Fox. After some research, though, I found that the cockpits of the Mk IXc and Mk XVI are almost identical. So, I bought two Quinta interior decals for Mk XVI. Why two? Because I have the Mk XVI kit to build. I plan to make it right after this one. I plan to do the cover version. Johnie J

  8. Hello all, Been a long time, time for an update. Life does get in the way sometimes but with patience and a lot of decals I was able to make some progress. I applied the kit RAM decals. This probably took the most time as alignment and subsequent use of decal softeners were important. After the ram decals, stencils, and markings were applied I sprayed on a layer of Tamiya clear thinned with Mr. Color thinner. I opted to go with a deployed ladder. I went with the upgraded Reskit ladder kit. For the ladder door I used Eduard’s PE, as it will remain confidently fla
  9. I’ve long had a F-4 “Black Bunny” on my list, and finally worked myself up to tackle the gloss black finish. This the is the 1/48 Zoukei-Mura F-4J. Quinta Studios cockpit decals were added, and the exterior decals are from Furball. The Quinta cockpit set looks great, but I honestly use these more to speed up a build if I’m not in the mood to spend time on the cockpit. So my use of them is variable. The Furball decals are decent, but not great. Their adhesion is on the weak side. I displaced a couple with a gentle washcloth wipe preparing for the final gloss coats
  10. I recently finished the Tamiya F-14A and had a great time with it. Especially given the complexity of the subject, the engineering is in a class by itself. The whole wing-swing mechanism is screwed up tight in its own box and simply works, period. Everything fits. The missiles provided in the box were quite satisfactory for me, and the kit missile (and other) stencils worked just fine, contrary to Tamiya's somewhat spotty reputation in that department. I did use a Quinta Studio cockpit set and AM resin ejection seats. I've also very much enjoyed the two Tamiya F-16s I've built, one
  11. You've done a great job yourself on that cockpit! I did paint some silver on the cockpit sidewall, but not much it would appear. Luckily, that area is hard to see unless you peer inside with a light, once the rear transparency is installed. Progress is slow, since a lot of this is very meticulous work. I got the compass installed, and put the panel and other parts in place on the lower frame. Notice the lovely Quinta details on the rudder pedals. The picture from Quinta instructions showed only part of the story for the shoulder straps, but I was able to get the other straps
  12. My local hobby shop got another Tamiya pre-release in, the upcoming 1/48 F-35A Lightning. I volunteered to build it for the owner, so here goes. I am finishing another project and hope to get to this one very soon. So I thought I’d share what came in the box. unlike the F-4B pre-release I built for this shop last year, this one comes with a full set of decals, mask set, a set if directions that a re not a cheap photocopy, and inserts showing the various marking options - eight in all. I am quite impressed with the kit. I like the fact that the wings are molded on the fuselage to
  13. Eduard has photoetched sets. I believe Grand Phoenix and Verlinden both have resin cockpits. Quinta also has a set.
  14. Last time I made an aircraft was almost 30 years ago, so I'm trying the preshading technique for the first time. This kit had some fit issues (or I get the sense that they didn't engineer it to be fool-proof), but overall is a nice kit. 3D-printed color cockpit details (Quinta) are a new thing for me too, and it's amazing how much more detail we can put in there with hardly any effort. I used a KASL resin ejection seat this time, but it seems like the best 3D-printed ones are now beating resin-cast ones in terms of quality consistency (my KASL piece had a lot of detail destroyed or
  15. Good start, the Quinta stuff is good, is it not. If I may (& it's not too late) Tamiya would have you paint the grey/green interior paint section slightly too big, it should only be up to the instrument panel & up to the bulkhead behind the seat. Outwith these areas it's painted aluminium.
  16. This is where I am now. Instrument panel looking good. I've also glued on the Quinta decal to the seat back, which is a huge enhancement to the kit detail. I painted the seat using the Tamiya red-brown paint called for, and the colour match with Quinta is not bad at all. Thanks for looking - more soon.
  17. The right cockpit sidewall, in progress. Two Quinta decals middle and rear, and a kit part I painted at front (left side in photo). That part, with the three white knobs, is an example of a difference between the A, B, and C variations in this kit.
  18. Here you can see I've scraped off the raised detail below the MIP, so I can put on the Quinta decal that represents it way better than the kit could. I also love the wire bundle poking out of the green part below the MIP. Another Quinta decal. I've never been able to do a Spitfire so well, and so easily. Quinta is well worth the investment. Sorry for the fuzziness of the rudder pedal pic. In a way it illustrates just how small some of the detail is. Quinta provides some green corrugated pedal covers, adding additional realism. In this photo, you can see 3 of 4 installed, with CA glue on t
  19. I painted everything XF-71, Tamiya's interior green. What's nice is I can find the Tamiya acrylic paints at my local hobby shop, and the call-outs are for Tamiya acrylics. Easy peasy. I paid close attention to the versions of Spit. JEJ's is version A, while the others are B or C. Some interior parts vary from version to version. Note how the Quinta MIP has a '33' on it - that's where their decal number 33 goes. Easy to follow.
  20. The Quinta decals are gorgeous. First, I bent the PE and painted the compass. There's a little kit decal that adds a nice touch. Tiny pieces - hard to manipulate.
  21. I was a bit surprised at the Quinta instructions. I've built other models with them (like a 1-48 MiG 21), and their instructions were a little more detailed. I quickly figured it out though. In the first image, you can see the instructions. The kit part numbers are in black, with the format A00. One thing I had to figure out was that the two Tamiya kits have different part numbers for some cockpit parts. No biggie - it's easy to figure out which is which. The blue/green part numbers are the Quinta decals. For example, you see that the backing kit part for the main panel is called JJ5. In
  22. Hi All, There seems to be a lot of writing about both the new subject jet models, more about the Meng than the ZM, or so it seems to me. But I haven't yet seen anyone do a head to head comparison between the two, such as, which one is better. Maybe that's not a good question to ask. Especially since 'better' is so subjective. How would you answer that? Which is easier to build? Which is more accurate? Which fits together better/easier? I know that Doog's has been doing a 'Weasel-Off', comparing the 2 kits, subject area versus subject area, but no final determination as of y
  23. Finished Tamiya’s F-4B with a Quinta cockpit, Eduard wheels, seats, TERS, and Sidewinders. Stencils are also from Eduard and the main markings are from Bullseye.
  24. Hello all I have been a long time lurker and thought I’d post my build. It’s the famous Tamiya Viper. Took about 1.5 years mainly due to having to restart the build after screwing up the intake and the Aires wheel bays. In the end gave up on the Aires bays since I felt the effort to make them work was not worth the effort and instead detailed up the stock gear bay with Eduard PE and lead wires. Aftermarket used - Aires F16CJ cockpit (not really worth the effort but fit was generally ok) Eduard F-16 late seat (found it better detailed than Aires) Quinta 3D
  25. Hi Dave, Hi Tank, Yes, sure there is the question of damage to surface details during building the kit and how will a modeller deal with that. The solution should start far earlier!!! One needs a good design and parts breakdown, a clever way of fitting and with todays CAD design the parts fit should be solved, without any need for corrections. So it is or rather it should NOT be a problem for the modeller! But this is a question which should (HAS TO BE) be solved by the kit maker company!!! In case of this Soviet Mi-17 kit there were several “i
