  1. I'm thinking of trying to pick up Quick boost's OH-6A conversion. I saw (somewhere) that the Academy kit is recommended. If the Academy and Hasegawa kits are essentially the same plastic then I'll probably pick up whichever is cheaper. For some reason the Minicraft/Hasegawa releases seem to go cheaper. I remember building both of the earlier Hasegawa releases back when they first came out and I remember them as being pretty basic kits that went together pretty well. TIA
  2. As I am building the latest iteration of the Sukhoi Su-34 - I thought I'd have a go at the earliest version - the T-10V1 Su-27IB. I originally thought of just grafting the original Su-27 tailboom onto the Italeri Su-34 kit - but the biggest problem I faced was filling in the mainwheel wells - they are huge on the Su-34 and cut into the intake sides - the whole area is totally different between the Su-27IB and production Su-34. So I have adopted the method that Sukhoi used - grafting the new side-by-side cockpit section front fuselage onto the rear of a tandem two-seat Su-27UB trainer...... Here's what I mean - the Italeri Su-34 is on the left, the Heller Su-27UB on the right - the blue tape shows where I am making the cuts.... Underside view showing the major difference in the main landing gear wells..... The Italeri Su-34 front end grafted onto the Heller Su-27UB rear end - note the discrepancy in the shape of the spines - fixable with generous applications of Milliput (I hope) Undersides ....... Now all I have to do is graft the Italeri wings onto the Heller fuselage (the Italeri wings are better), fix the intakes (the scallop for the well on the Heller intake is now correct for the Su-27IB - but the intake lower edges are too 'square' and lack the slot in the bottom)....... More later.. Ken
  3. So this will be my first work-in-progress, it's going to be a 1/32 Tamiya F-16CJ kit, converted into the F-16A 3-tone Grey Aggressor used the NSAWC for training with the GT Resin NSI inlet, exhaust, as well as parts for the smaller gear and non-bulged doors, KASL F-16A tail (modified to remove the parabrake housing), Two Bobs F-16A Aggressor decals, and True details F-16A cockpit. Love this camouflage scheme for Black 56, and all the touch-ups and fading on it will make for some good airbrushing fun. Here's the cockpit to start and then with the back area removed After some rough cutting and sanding, the inner portion of the kit parts got sanded down as well as the resin pieces cleaned up and smoothed down to ensure a "drop fit" I find patience is the key to making resin work in different kits they were designed for, along with dry fit, dry fit, dry fit. A power drill with a sanding wheel also helped decrease the time tremendously, just do it in short bursts as you can really feel the plastic heat up with this thing. I made sure by taping all the resin piece together that it would fit with the canopy up or down, took about a week or messing around but I was able to get it all to fit with some modifications: I thought long and hard about how to do the filling required to clean up the parts without having a step, that's when I remembered using milliput once and thought this stuff would be perfect for it. It did work very well, but I took a long time to carefully file, sand, and smooth everything out, but you can see the results. I also have another F-16CJ with Aires cockpit that has a little piece to close up the opening in near the hood of the instrument panel that I traced out on plastic card and placed flush against the angled lip inside the cockpit, its not perfect, but close enough and it's all black in that portion anyways. So I can live with it.

  5. Cheers folks, I'd like to show you a few photos of my 1/32nd scale EA-6B Prowler, a scratchbuilt conversion based on Trumpeter's A-6A kit. This conversion required the whole bunch of techniques I have access to - CNC milling, laser cutting, 3D printing and classic scratchbuilding. The decal artwork was drawn by me and then silk printed in Czech Republic. I am currently working on a carrier deck diorama , USS Kitty Hawk's port stern section to be precise; this is the area at least one Prowler was typically parked. The Birdcage was fully scratchbuilt as it has nothing in common with its counterpart on the Intruder. The deck personnel is from Reedoak, the pilots were built using parts from several 'classic' resin figures. When will we finally get some up-to-date Naval aviators in 32nd scale?! Here's an early stage of the carrier deck section with the Prowler on top. If you are interested in seeing how the Prowler was built and if you want to see how the deck is being built, feel free to check out my Facebook page "Scale Navy Stuff"; you can find the link in my signature. If you have any critique, comments, remarks or questions, please don't hesitate to ask! As soon as the deck is finished, I'll take some better photos and post them here! Cheers Ben
