Hi everyone,

I thought I might show some of the progress I've made so far on my Mig-15 kit. It's a fairly trouble free build, except for the instrument panel. Trumpeter basically give a clear flat panel to put over a film with the instrument detail. I've tried to do a little better by drilling holes in the flat panel to better represent the dials. Not perfect by any means, but better than the original kit idea. I painted the cockpit a medium grey. It's not quite bluish enough from pics I've seen, but close enough anyway. I plan on closing the canopy anyway, so I'm not overly worried. Here's a pic to show what it looks like.

I've got the major parts together, and just need to give it a good clean up to get it ready for priming for Alclad.

What's next is the engine. There's a bit of a mould mismatch in that sprue, so I'm thinking I might just paint the end of the tailpipe and permanently connect the front and rear fuselage. Test fitting them to see how it hold up unglued leaves a bit too much of a gap anyway.

So look Colin - someone IS building a MiG-15!

Glad to see someone building the Korean enigma at last  What's the scheme you are working on?

I'd like to build MiG-15 too... and Sabre... and Thunderjet... and Shooting Star... and to have at least 40 hours per day :D

How is the Trumpeter Mig-15 compared to the Tamiya kit? Or is that opening up a can of worms  ?

Nice work thus far  ! I look forward to seeing this kit as it progresses towards completion!

Regards,

Don

Trumpeter is more accurate and more detailed than Tamiya. But from another hand it much more difficult to assemble. And angles of sweep of Trumpeter's fin and stabilizer are incorrect.

Thanks for the kind words guys, as for comparing the Tamiya and Trumpeter kits, I have no idea as this is my only MiG in the stash. I can say that the Trumpeter kit definitely doesn't fall together with Tamiya style simplicity!

Anyway, I've assembled and painted the engine using a few different shades of Alclad (dark aluminium doesn't seem to be all that different from aluminium). There was something of a mould mismatch is some of the engine pieces, so there are some prominent seam lines on some of the smaller parts, but it seems to be hidden in the general clutter of the engine. I still may consider not fixing the rear fuselage, and leaving the engine exposed.

How noticable? Is this something that you could easily notice simply looking at it on the shelf, just by knowing generally what it looks like? Or is it only readily spotted when placed on linedrawings?

Great job so far, the engine is looking great!

As far as I know the Trumpeter 1/48 scale Mig-15s are the best and most accurate Mig-15s on the market. The Tamiya kit, is a nice kit but is incorrect all over the place, its fin is the wrong shape.

The angle of fin's sweep should be about 4.5 deg more. Pretty noticeable if you know wewr to find :D

Anyway Trumpeter's kit looks definitely as MiG-15

looks like your alclad came out pretty darn good. <_<

No lie! What did you use for a primer? Did you use the Alclad grey primer or a different one?

Sweet build...man I really have a desire to get me one of these kits!

Great job and please keep us posted.

Don

Looks Great Raptor! Here's my final finished product, nothing compared to yours though.

Don, I used Future as a Primer for the Alclad. I might try some Tamiya Gloss Black Spray paint next time to see if that works out any better.

The Trumpeter decals went on the best of any decals I've used so far! They conformed great to panel lines and the film is nearly invisible, even on BMF. Unfortunately I screwed up the first part of the large serial number on the Right hand side of the nose, leaving it out of position and not noticing until well and truly after the decal was dry! I've scraped it off with the help of some MicroSol, but can't really find a replacement. I think an effort to make a stencil and paint it on would look worse, so I've decided to live with it.

However, this has inspired me to build a second MiG-15 this time - a Tamiya kit supplied courtesy of our very own ARC Troublemaker, Raymond! I'm going to finish it in the Chinese Red tailed BMF kit markings. I'll post some pics of that one soon.

This kit has given me some valuable experience with Alclad to produce a BMF, and sparked an interest in early jets that has already resulted in a build of a Meteor, and the purchase of an F-84G kit hopefully completed in time for this GB as well.

Anyway, enough with the blabbing - on to the pics!
