Keith Diamond
Thing is it was never officially the Lightning II ever, that was a Lockheed thing... ah, thanks. Didn't know that the manufacturer sometimes publishes a name before the AF chooses one.
Rapier01
Even with Lockheed it was never really official, they were just hoping for it... but the media ran with it. They picked the official name for the roll out
Keith Diamond
but the media ran with it. Surprise, surprise... Very different situation, but it makes me think of how the F-35 got it's number designation. Edited November 13, 2006 by Keith Diamond

GreyGhost
mmm... wonder if Raptors knew that would be their name so many million years later... given to them by something that didn't exist in their time... wonder what their names were in their own minds? I think they preferred the name "Bad *** Mo Fo" ! habu2
Thing is it was never officially the Lightning II ever, that was a Lockheed thing... Lightning II was the name Lockheed chose for the YF-22, prototypes don't get officially named by the military. I don't know what the corporate name was for the JSF prototypes (X-32, X-35) but I imagine LM did a lot of lobbying to get the F-35 named Lightning II. Being a multi-national program (Airbus thread relevence) the Lightning name had roots in the Lockheed P-38 Lightning and the English Electric Lightning.
roym
I think the Chinese can have that one.Though actually, now that I say that, where is Starfix manufactured? I thought they were an Israeli company. Think I read that somewhere. Stand to be corrected though. (Star of David, Starfix?)

David Walker
I know this thread has turned in a different direction, but that has to be one of the most frighteningly ugly planes I've ever seen.
