erwin
Hi all, To keep the tradition high when joining a groupbuild,I shall build another wooden model. This is the Guillows 1/28 th Catalina. It will be made as the PBY 5 witch means as a flying boat.

erwin
Wow Erwin......So the big question.... will this thing actually float? Nice one Doc Good Q Doc,but I won't risk trying it out I must admitt that I had a hard time resisting to build this model untill the GB page was up. So I did some building already. It's very far from the end, so I geuss it still falls under the rules. The fuselage is done ...

erwin
BTW,I'm also building the 1/16 th Hurricane at the moment. But because there isn't a GB to put it in,I posted it in the progress board... http://s102164210.onlinehome.us/forums/ind...pid=911920&
jrallman
shoulda saved the hurricane for one of the upcoming GBs, either Eastern Front or Med/NA
erwin
shoulda saved the hurricane for one of the upcoming GBs, either Eastern Front or Med/NA Maybe I should have. But they don't start untill mid 2007. This Hurricane is one I wanted to do for a long time. But...I still have a wooden Fieseler Storch in the pile. I shall save that one for the Med/NA GB.
erwin
Starting the tail. All is scratchbuild...
Dr Fester
Starting the tail. All is scratchbuild... Why is that Erwin, surely the kit came with those pieces........? Doc
jrallman
sadistic pleasure perhaps?
erwin
Why is that Erwin, surely the kit came with those pieces........?Doc Yes the kit had those. But when I compared them to the plastic 48 th Monogram kit they were all wrong. They didn't do it for me. That's why I shall try to make it more like the real thing. Sort of incorporated into the fuselage, rather than just stuck on top of it. Here you see I got the overall shape of the fin.But it's still not correct... Next I used 1 mm balsa ans soaked it in water witch makes it soft and bendable. Then I pin it down to shape. When dry it stays in that shape for glueing...
Dr Fester
And that is why balsa is the best material for scratchbuilding. Reminds me of the balsa gliders I made many moons ago, although I used to get a pin shaped 'dent' in my finger if you know what I mean! Good stuff Erwin. Doc
jrallman
great stuff there Erwin!
miduppergunner
This is model aircraft building- I remember seeing one of these at a contest and it did ROW. I am sure it had geared rubber powered motors. But there are some amazing modellers in the free flight scale fraternity. Nice to see one of them here!

jrallman
the way you blend these pieces into the fuse for such a seamless result is fantastic!
Nev
Man, no way could I build one of these. Just looking at all that filler & sanding makes me feel unwell..... Hats off to you Erwin.
erwin
Starting the wing... The outersections are removable(unlike stated in the kit) for easier display.
erwin
Completed the wing after a days, and most of the night :D ,work... Also note the added enginesupports. The outersections stay detachable for easier transport...
