Andy Mullen
Was looking at list of kits I have in the stash and found this one. Airfix had just re-released it in limited quantities before their lastest problems. Box Contents (Note the Airfix stand included - I hope we see the return of those in their rebirth) Just started gluing the windows - they constitue a 1/4 of the kit parts :D , and will be posting pics after the fuselage is closeded up - no interior or cockpit. indydog
This kit is also available in the "History of Flight" 4-plane kit and includes markings for the tri-color Dixie Clipper, the plane that carried Roosevelt to Casablanca.

Andy Mullen
Quick update. All windows and doors were glued to the fuselage halves first. Next I glued the two halves inch by inch as there was a tendency for them to come apart if not held together until the glue had cured. In the end there was only the top section that required a little Tamiya putty along the seams. The wings, rear tail sectoins and side sponsons were glued togther whilst waiting for sections of the fuselage to cure; no problems encountered. After cleanup of all seams I have glued the sponsons on, but the starboard wing join is going to have to be worked on to reduce the gap on top. For this pic I dry fitted the rear tails and the wings. Ranger74
Man..............some of you are making me feel bad. I haven't even removed parts from the sprues! Andy Mullen
Wings were glued on and only a slight amount of putty was required after test fitting and filing. The tail was glued on with no work necessary. The next stage was to mask the windows, which took a while. Then I sprayed Humbrol #11 Silver and let cure overnight. The top of the wing was masked and Humbrol #19 Red was applied. After letting the Red cure for about 18 hours, I then masked off ready for the black. I was thrown off slightly by the instructions which states to use Humbrol #30 green, but after checking and double checking I noticed they also say to use Humbrol #33. After the check of pictures I also noticed that the plane had deicing boots along the leading edges. These are not very clear on the instructions, so be warned. [edit: Just noticed they are shown in much better detail on the boxart ] I eventually finished the masking and sprayed Humbrol #85 Satin Black instead of the Matt as suggested. Depending on how well the decals apply I should have it finished in the next day or so. Edited March 10, 2008 by Andy Mullen
Dr Fester
Wow ..... looks great Andy. Always had fondness for this particular airfix kit, I think I was sold by the box art as a kid so I'm looking forward to seeing how it should be built! Cheers Doc
jrallman
paint job looks really great!
Andy Mullen
After giving the paintwork time to cure, I attached the engines, applied Bare Metal Foil to the back of the wing landing lights and attached them, along with the observation dome, with Humbrol Clearfix. I then applied the very few decals. I botched up the starboard "Pan American Airways System", so you will have imagine it's there for now. I may attempt another build and do the B.O.A.C. version at a later date, and use the PAAS decal from there. Andy Mullen
great job! they really had the flag backward on the starboard side? According to this photo, yes B) Source: http://www.airliner.net/
jrallman
man, with "American" in your name, you'd think that you would care more about getting the flag facing the correct way than having the flags be symmetrical!
Nev
Wow, that looks really, really, really nice!!
desmojen
Looks gorgeous Andy :D Innocent question - why is the stand on backwards? As for the flag, can you make out if the serials on the tail are the right way around? I've seen photos before now that for some reason are printed in reverse, and the only way you can tell are by the markings being back to front. Beautiful job though, on a beautiful aeroplane :( Jen. Dr Fester
Wonderful work Andy and our first finished build. :( I was thinking along the same lines as Jen, could this picture just be a reversed negative? Flipped it looks like this :- Can't make out the serial no's though. Anyhow Andy this is a masterpiece, you build quick yet with superb quality. BTW what is the wingspan now she is complete, can't tell from your great camera work, could be 1/48 the pics look that clear! All the best Doc Edited December 12, 2006 by Dr Fester
Pete Wenman
Nice looking Clipper Andy. You can't beat some of those old Airfix kits. As to the flag issue I know the US Army has the reversed flag when worn on the right shoulder. Something to do the flag always moving forwards towards the enemy. Or it may just be so that it looks like the flag is blowing backwards as the soldier (or aircraft) moves forwards. Someone in the US Forces ought to know Pete
Dr Fester
Andy, Sorry geography not one of my strong points but if the photo is indeed San Fran bay and the GG bridge in the background, with Alcatraz directly underneath 'Dixie', then for sure the photo is correct. Kingoalie
Great build! And it only took you 10 days! I'm jealous! John
Andy Mullen
Thanks for the compliments guys and gals On the flag issue I did a double take when I was inspecting the decals, but I couldn't find a clear Dixie photo but I did manage to find a Yankee Clipper photo (Serial is NC 18603), that shows the flag the "wrong" way round. Source: Virtual Museum Canada @ Jen: She is tail heavy so this was the only way to keep her on the stand. If I had known I might have added some nose weight. Still, looks different @ Pete (Dr Fester): size is 32cm wingspan by 21cm in length. A group shot with some of my other 1/144 builds to give you an idea of the scale.
