1/72 HH-47 CSAR-X

Recommended Posts

Well, now it´s finished. Somehow reality overtook me since when I was planning and doing first steps on the model the CSAR-X decision of the USAF wasn´t public and so I made a "what-if" Chinook. Right now it seems like they watched my built and decided this was the right bird for future CSAR-Ops... B)

The building-progress itself can be seen here: http://s102164210.onlinehome.us/forums/ind...=99361&st=0

In the end there are some things I could have done better, especially the right front door and the fairing around the base of the refueling probe. Next time... ;)

OK, just enjoy:

And with the actual CSAR-helo, my MH-53:

Flyingfortress: Yes, CSAR stands for Combat Search and Rescue, the X was used since there were three contenders for this project, the HH-47, the EH-101 Merlin and the S-92. Just check out the helo-forum for CSAR, you´ll find some interesting stuff posted there.

Trigger: I used Humbrols No. 126, toned a bit darker and filled up with clear flat drab since 126 is not drab originally. So basically a mix of colours, sorry I can´t give you better help.

I didn´d applied the national insignia because I didn´t know where to put it, there wasn´t much space left... OK, by reviewing my helo I could have done it right in front of the "USAF" and above the engines.

A custom Humbrol 126 mix... nice. Not quite 36118 gray, but not quite a green either. There's a CSAR-X GB going on over on FSM and I've got three types (HH-47H, HH-71G and HH-53N) under construction. The Hook will be AFSOC gray, the -53N will be green, but I hadn't decided on a color for the HH-71G yet.

As for the insignia, the aft doghouse is one option, so is the aft fuselage under the engine nacelle. Underside shouldn't be a problem.

The differences between the MH-47G and HH-47H are a more than cosmetic. The HH-47H will be based on the MH-47G, but will contain a patient treatment area in the forward cabin just aft of the cabin door (I haven't seen the mock-up, but its description is similar to that of dedicated medivac helicopters such as the UH-60Q).

The forward cabin door will also be wider to more easily facilitate the stokes liter and a PJ/rescue customer riding up the hoist. The lower door will be omitted and replaced with a plug to be used while in flight. There will be a rounded fairing over the refueling probe equipment to keep the hoist line from fraying against any sharp corners (A PJ was killed in Korea several years ago when the hoist line snapped due to contact with the aircraft). And the forward gunner's window opposite of the forward cabin door may be larger as well.

The Air Force will keep the flare buckets. There may be more or they may be a different type, but they'll be there.

And the back ramp is two-piece and works like that of a C-130. When opened, the upper half goes up, the lower half goes down.

Yeah, I thought about using the same (mixed) grey as on the MH-53, but since this is a completely new helo (barely used in real life) I decided to paint it in a bit lighter grey than the usual gunship grey.

I just saw your post and wanted to add a couple things to the HH-47 CSAR-X discussion. The HH-47 was also going to have two hoist , one behind the other. The incident in Korea was during Team Spirit and the two individuals on the forest penetrator that were killed was an A-10 pilot stationed at Osan AB, and a SERE specialist stationed at Fairchild AFB,WA. He was a good friend , a great airman , who never got to see his unborn son. His name was Sgt Roger Ross.
