I have just cought up with your finished a/c photos. Awesome! In those close ups especially, the neat work and the weathering - simply stunning.

Definitely a target to aim for.

Thanks all,

Looking at the photos again I can see so much I have forgotten  , and much more to detail before this crate gets chucked in the drink.

Just ordered the clear casting resin today from a company I found on ebay, got a good deal. Also ordered various bits for the diorama from Hannants, in a week or so I should be ready for the final stage.

Have to construct the jetty first from wood and make sure that it's totally complete painted and weathered before the sea can be unleashed on it.

Cheers

Sorry Jay didn't mean to be secretive.

The UK company I am using is found HERE. Obviously the stuff I am ordering is the Water Clear resin, sounds just the job.

In reality if you were to type in "clear casting resin" on ebay you should come up with some pretty good results and more importantly closer to home!

Cheers

Hey Doc, can you rig up a webcam at your work bench so we can just watch how you do that?!? Incredible. Amazing.

Dang... Now I feel like leaving work for the day and going to build build build! I even have a SwFish kit in the stash....

Simply AWESOME.

tracy (Yep, am back!)

I don't have the words mate - absolutely fantastic work!

Really looking forward to seeing the water base come together too (that ditched Dauntless of yours is equally astounding). If it looks like a technique acheivable by mortals such as myself then I may attempt it for my Seafox (it's coming, honest).

Steve.

Thanks, I actually did just that, searched for clear casting resin on Ebay and there is some nice stuff, decent price too. I am tempted more and more to get some to try some water with my tamiya seiran.

No progress to report with the diorama but I have received my batch of gooey clear casting resin for the water. I went a little over the top and ordered a 5lt can yikes  but I can remember running out of the stuff when I used it last. ( its deceptive how much will actually get used)

Also I have brought some different coloured vinyls home from work to use on the bottom panel of the dio base. Possibly I will use the darkest green colour and gradually lighten the resin towards the surface to give the impression of depth.

What kind of camera did you use for your photos?

Jeff, nothing fancy just a Fuji finefix 602 although this camera does have an extremely good macro function. It also has manual override allowing you to fiddle with the settings to get better depth of field etc.

I had the misfortune of buying some really expensive Canon SLR kit just as digital took off  . Don't even touch film cameras now and I have quite a few.

When are going to do the base?? I have to see how you do it!!

OK Dave you asked for it.......

First off planning the base and diorama layout which I intend having the Swordfish moored at the jetty after a sortie. As you know I have the base which is now covered in the dark green vinyl and glued with epoxy to the frame. So then I ran some silicone sealant around the joins in the frame to make sure the sea stays in!

Also having decided that the jetty would take up a large area of the base I added a block underneath where the jetty would eventually sit. This enables me to use much less water casting resin by blocking out the unused portion.

base_block.jpg

Then on to the jetty itself which will be made from solid foam and edged with wood. Here is the foam cut to size and edged with wood, fortunately I have plenty of small sections of wood and planking from building wooden sailing ships.

base_foamex.jpg

The jetty has to be planked basically using the same technique I use for planking ships. The planks are cut to scale length and applied one by one using straight PVA glue.

base_plank.jpg

I find this job sort of therapeutic and I know I could have just used one sheet of wood and scribed the planks on but this give a much more uneven finish (the way I model anyway!)

base_plankhalf.jpg

And after an hour or so its done.....

base_plankfinish.jpg

When the section had dried I sanded the surface down and applied a dark wax to the wood, this brings out the detail in the planks and fills all the gaps. I also cut out the notches for the pillers to be fitted later.

base_plankwax.jpg

With this in place I glued the whole thing down overnight using epoxy. Then I set to work making the pillars for supporting the jetty which I then gave an oil wash with a dark green/black mix, this will be dry brushed later to highlight the detail.

basefin2.jpg

Drums and figure there to show the scale only

base_fin1.jpg

The pillars fixed using PVA glue, in fact you can see its still wet when I took the photo. I am busy making a ladder for the side of the jetty and trying to get everything ready before I add the resin.......

More to follow soon........

Have you ever seen or used "weather it" from Micro Mark?

Nope...... but it looks like a good product, have you used it?

Sounds like it actually bleaches the wood to produce a nice effect. Just wondering if I could use powders to give the same effect, what do you think?

Cheers

Doc,

That looks great! I bought some casting resin last year to try and make a water base for my PBY-5A, but I am still trying to figure out how to do it without using $100 worth of casting resin. That PBY requires a HUGE base.

Keep up the good work. Your green vinyl idea has given me some new ideas!

I think it bleaches and slightly discolors it at the same time. I havent used it since I dont use wood very often, though I might get some now for some diorama bases, but I have seen it used in a few photos and it looks really cool! I think powders could give a really nice effect too, especially if you push them into the wood grain a little bit. we've all seen old docks and piers, and that wood really takes a beating, so I think it would be pretty hard to over-weather your pier!
