I hadn't heard about the Tamiya putty - thanks for the tip

The squadron putty thins out nice with a q-tip of laquer thinner or Pro-weld though...

My next filler of choice after I run out of the tasty green stuff was going to be Napa stuff. I had heard good things about that too.

But since I do need to visit High Sierra Hobby for some paint (dark gull gray for a F-14D cockpit) on my way back to Fallon from the airport next week, I think I'll grab some Tamiya putty and check it out!

Maybe that's the load-out you should do. :)

BWAHAHAHAAHHHAHA

You know, that probably won't be the one I finish with and put on the shelf, but if I just happen to take a break when I get 2 on one side, and 1 on the other, and the camera happens to be nearby... :D

Great job so far Karl

Is the "Shocker" going to be the "official" name on the boat then?

If you're referring to the ball call, no one knows yet, but it may very well be. I don't see them using the G word for ball calls because it sounds too much like Prowler and there's going to be a few years of overlap - imagine the confusion (and potential for disaster).

I don't forsee ANYBODY using the G-word.

I'll be keeping my eye on this one Karl

Spongebob guessed right. I'm going with -137. I haven't QUITE figured out how to do the tail markings yet... though I'm not going to hold myself to the current silly rule of having to fit the tailcode between the slime light and rudder. One, I think it's a silly rule to begin with and two, I hope by the time we transition it will either be gone or our type wing will ignore it.

Not doing -209 because frankly I don't like how they designed the markings (and I don't actually know where they come from...). And I'm not fond of the RAG markings I've seen - either in the kit, or any of the paint jobs I've seen on real airplanes yet (and no, I have no idea what those stupid eyeballs on the decal sheet are for...).

So, I've got some thinking to do on tail markings. Our air wing's C model squadron put their tailcodes on the inboard side, which is an option. I MIGHT go with super hornet convention if I can find letters the right size and slant to fit, and an appropriate sized Rook...

Of course, with the speed of my building I've got nothing but time...

And see, I like the rational behind your decisions with this build. It's nice to see a lot of thought put into a fictional build, especially to make it a little personal to yourself. BTW, I'm clueless to most VAQ markings, so I did a quick google search, and I must say, those will be attractive markings!

Oh, and I'm with you. After building a handful of Testors/Italeri kits and such, I definitely do not fear a bit of putty and sandpaper!

Hey Karl,

Gee you actually build.. this has inspired me to make the EA-18G as my next project... I was thinking that since the navy brought back the VF-111 "Sundowners" - I'm thinking maybe make my EA-18G into VAQ-1 markings bringing back the "wolfpack" going to start on the this this weekend.

I've been known to tinker...

That would look pretty cool

They actually know what squadrons are transitioning, but I'd hate to spoil the surprise. Besides, I'd like to see the wolfpack markings.

Would they actually do a different ball call? Or are the Ex-Prowler types looking for upgrades??

Might. Would typically be >3K heavier than an F... I'm not Hornet smart enough to know if that makes a difference.

I highly doubt prowler guys will be looking for upgrades. ACLS that actually works? A jet that actually responds? I see lots of stick monkeys saving their end-of-line period dollars for the G string of some young coed working her way through school.

It would just distract them. Not to mention the break in concentration caused by having to call their own needles. :)

More importantly, a jet that won't bolter if you're a touch fast, or have cool compressor stalls crossing the ramp.

I am getting all my stuff together for my Shocker...been watching your thread here pretty closely. How are the jamming pods in the kit? Are they decent, or should I got with the CE ones? They're $12.99, so not too expensive, but since I am going to be buying the Italeri kit as a doner (going to convert the Revell F) I'm not going to spend another thirteen dollars on someting that is not going to improve the look much. Thank's for your help.

They're passable. I'm using the CE ones on mine, just because I'm not too thrilled with the intake scoop or back end of the pod on the kit ones. But then obviously I'm not doing the donor thing. It seemed like a strange way to spend my money for something that I don't figure would save me much time, given the extra antennae, wing fences and the dogtooth on the wing leading edge (which I haven't got to yet) you'd still have to do.

Well with an air wing around (Rodney can vouch for me...) and the fill-sand-fill routine going on, there hasn't been a lot of photo-worthy progress, but I've been tinkering on some of the other assemblies too. Here's what I've got so far for underwing stuff and landing gear (yes, I know the gear could benefit from a wash, but I haven't gotten around to future-ing it yet)

I got an envelope of goodies from Darren Roberts this week, so I'm also painting up a resin ACS instrument panel for the backseat. It will actually drop right in where the old one was so the fact that I've closed up the fuselage isn't that big of a problem...
