VF-x
I'm putting together an ACES II seat that will be all black. Being totally black, the seat tends to lose the lovely details molded into the resin. Can someone recommend a gray tone that would be nice to offset the black? I've considered using white, but it will be too high of a contrast. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, VF-x
EdKinsel
I'd try RLM 66 for a pre-mixed color, or try just a touch of white in the black you used as the base coat. Depends on how dramatic you want the effect to be. Ed Kinsel I'm putting together an ACES II seat that will be all black. David Walker
I'd agree with RLM66 or perhaps FS36081 Euro 1 Grey or FS36118 Gunship Grey.
volzj
I usually use Dark Gull Gray, and build it up slowly. Looks fine to me.
Chris Kethan
The RLM 66 is a great color - just drybrush lightly until you get the effect you are looking for. After you finish, lightly finish with a little 'steel' color. It really highlights things nicely. Chris
Karl Sander
Not being at home with my trusty modeller's technical guide (and color cross reference), I don't know what RLM 66 is. But I've had good results with dark gull gray, dark ghost gray and gunship gray.
EdKinsel
Karl, RLM 66 is one of two standard WW II Luftwaffe interior colors. It's a very dark gray. VF-x
Is Gunship Gray lighter or darker than RLM66? I'd have to find a source for RLM66.
David Walker
Gunship Gray is usually slightly lighter than RLM66, which is closer to 36081. In fact, some sources list FS36081 as an equivalent of RLM66, though of course RLM shades don't have direct FS counterparts. And Model Master (acryl and enamel), Polly Scale and WEM all have RLM66 in their ranges. Edited December 22, 2006 by David Walker
David Walker
I like Humbrol 32 Dark matt grey It's funny, as this came up in an earlier thread today, but IPMS Stockholm lists Hu32 as FS36081 as well as a substitute for RLM66.
Yoxford
I use at least 3 different shades of black to paint modern seats. I start with Floquil Engine Black, follow that with Tamiya Semi-gloss black, then finish with some Model Master Aircraft Interior Black. I find the various shades and sheens break up the monochromatic look very well. Then a light drybrush with silver is all you need. HTH
Adam Baker
Im glad this topic came up, as I plan on painting the seat for my 1/32 F-18 tonight, and was just wondering the same thing.
A.Cagri Acikgoz
try to use "interior black" color from Model Masters II enamel line..
toadwbg
I second the RLM 66 usage. Works great for me. Alternatively, I will airbrush MM Interior Black and than use a black wash in the recesses. Sometimes I just do all sorts of techniques until I get the desired results....
