Abandoned russian aircraft

Recommended Posts

Forgive me for waxing philosophical, but...

I know we all love airplanes, but I am just glad to see them go to rest at the hand of the salvage man instead of enemy action. There is a girl (about my age, early thirties) who works at the little coffee house I go to, who is from Moscow. She's such a nice gal and I have often thought to myself of how glad I am that our countries didn't go to war with each other.

I guess if they have to end up in pieces, better in times of peace than as missile fodder.

You're right on all accounts!

Still, it's sad to see thes once mighty planes die a slow, undignified death. :D

This old SAC trained killer couldn't agree more, Pete. One thing I was always thankful for is that we never had to perform the mission we trained so hard for.

All things must pass, but I always hoped that some of these old Soviet cold warrior birds would find a home in a museum here in the 'States.

Here's a shot I took near Moscow back in 1991:

Cold War Warriors on both sides have ended up in the same type of scrap pile. Whether it is AMARC in Arizona or someplace in Britain or Russia, it is much better to see the airplanes destroyed in peace, (or is that pieces), rather than the crews and several million people on the ground destroyed as well.

Merry Christmas
