.... Which decals are in that boxing, anyway?

HE09687... VF-11 (Last Cruise, doesn't say it on the box, but the decals represent it) 1/48

HE00814.... VF-143 Last Cruise 1/72

Hasegawa does seem to have some "interesting" pricing policies.

As an example, the local hobby shop (which is strictly MSRP) over the last few years has had several 1/48 Hornets on their shelves and the prices range from around $45 up to $100 (I'm not kidding!). Granted, the higher priced ones are typically "special" such as a Blue Angels release, but for essentially the same kit other than decals, the variety in pricing is amazing.

Of course, the prices may have had some impact from differences in exchange rates at the time of their purchase (Some of the higher priced kits were on the shelves for years).

Very true, due to the differences in the dollar the hobby store paid at the time, Avaiation World in Toronto has a Has 1/48 F-14B at $60 something Canadian and the exact same model just different decals which has been on the shelf for several years now for close to $90.

Not the fault of the model store, just the way the dollar was on the day they bought the kit.

What I don't get is the 1/72 "Low Viz" and "High Viz" Hasegawa Tomcat kits are selling at online Hobby Sites for between $17 and $21 USD, depending on where you get them from. Now, as I understand it these are the older Hasegawa Tomcat kits, with raised panel lines and not as detailed as the newer tool F-14's (perhaps I am wrong on that assumption?). Now, if you are not too particular about the box art or markings found inside, you can get the newer tool Hasegawa Tomcat kits (including a 'B') for between $21 and $23 USD (which I think is actually quite reasonable compared to what Hasegawa charges for their 1/72 F/A-18A,B,C,D kits!). With a price difference of between $4 and $6 USD for the older tool and newer tool Hasegawa 1/72 Tomcat kits, one has to wonder who buys the older Hasegawa Tomcat kits. Now I know they are not as tricky to assemble as their newer tool brothers, and sometimes simple is better when doing up a long line of F-14's, but wow.

Sorry if I got off topic there... .

Regards,

Don

Ding, ding, ding!... we have a winner! :D

I used to work in my LHS and this was the bane of our existence. Got frustrating having to explain to people that it wasn't US that was trying to "rip them off" with the stupid differential pricing. Customers in general can be pretty dense sometimes. No matter how you explain to them the difference between the Yen and the U.S. Dollar at the times the kits came into the U.S.... they either still don't understand or refuse to understand and still want to argue!

Needless to say, we ended up getting shafted on some kits due to the higher pricing and those just continue to sit and sit as people overlook them for the lower priced ones. Probably have some pretty sought after boxings I'm sure as I see them trickle out over time as they get "discovered" by somebody that's been looking for them.

You're waiting for squadron's Hase tomcats too? I thought I was the only one... Get the feeling they're going to take a while.

And if anyone needs one, my LHS has the 1/48 Hase Blue Angels F/A-18 for only $65! Maybe that's a bargin. Still don't think I'll pick that one up.

Personally I buy a LOT of the 1/72 Hase tomcats and have no problem spending up to $30 new, and consider them a great deal from $20-$25 for the amount of plastic and detail in that kit. I also rarely use the kit decals, so just about any release is fine with me. Consider that this kit was $20 when it was released in 1989...Not much in the way of inflation there! Now, I remember paying $50 for fugimi's 1/72 "prototype" Super Tomcat - that wasn't worth the money.

I've said for a long time I think a 'brown bag' version of these kits is needed - plain box and no decals (how many of us really use the kit decals?). Just the kit. Chop the price a bit and you'd have a great seller!

I agree and I would even take the old tool 1/72 Hasegawa F-14 kit in a plain old brown box if it were around $10 US or somewhere (heck put it in a brown paper bag and charge me less then $10... ). I know it has raised panel lines and is not as detailed as it's newer 1/72 brother, but I have built so many in the past that I can crank them out rather quickly and they do go together with little fuss and almost no panel line loss due to filling and sanding. I used to hunt for them on Ebay and scooped a few for under $10 US with the shipping! However, I have not seen any of the old tool Hasegawa F-14's on Ebay for that low a price in a long time. By the time you win an old tool T-Cat on Ebay you may as well add a few more bucks to your bid and go for a new tool 1/72 Hasegawa Tomkitty...at least in my way of thinking.

Don

Even still, 60 dollars for a 1/48 scale kit is a lot of money.

Oh? Have you priced the recently released 1:72 Discovery from 2001: A Space Odyssey? $750 USD. Or, how about the Master Replicas completed 1:350 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 from Star Trek at $1,200 USD? I could go on...
