The P-8A recieves a new name

Recommended Posts

Poseidon is a very good name for the aircraft. All of the ASW aircraft have had good names. Tracker, Orion, and Viking all fit...and so does Poseidon. Although in my mind I can already hear people calling it a "Posse." You heard it from me first, folks.

When is someone going to come out with a 1/72 model of the P-8 to go with my other ASW aircraft?

You ought to see the (I'm guessing) a 1/10 scale MMA model they have at the program office...on a huge stick. It's about 4 feet to 4-1/2 long, grey and sexy.... well not really.

Amazing how long it takes to get a name for an airplane. About 2 years ago the request went out for possible names....I remember Posiden being one of them. Guess it's official. Now they just have to build and test the thing.....interesting times ahead (and expensive).

Cheers

A replacement for the P-3 has been in the works for about a two decades. Originally Lockheed has something called the P-7 MMA going along until the post-Cold war draw down it was killed by SecDef Cheney. Then about a 6 yrs ago the Navy realized they seriously needed a replacement for the P-3C and put out bids which Boeing won with a modified version of thier 737-800. What was going strong for this is that except for ASW specific internals this is the same identical airframe as is being used for the C-40A Clipper the latest Navy Transport unit.

Right now though all there is are just some artist renderings of this performing its various mission

Careful young padawan, one must not stir the Ju-Ju Gods.

Oh GOD! What have I done?! I didn't even consider that. :bandhead2:

Back to the dash one (AF version of NATOPS) immediately...I've got some reading to do on spell reversal.

Don't forget the Neptune also ... ;)

Actually there are a bunch of differences. It was once thought that the C-40 and MMA would be more common in nature...but at the engineering study progressed.... it became aparent that this was not the case. Either way.... the big bosses wanted jet engines ("the next generation of MPA is not going to have propellers"). You have to cater to what the bosses want.

That third illustration is so cheese-ball.
Indeed - it looks like an 80s hair metal album cover!

Both of you bite your tongues - the mighty 737 can never be made to look bad!

An illustration that I saw about a year ago depicted the MMA as having winglets similar in appearance to the 767-400 and 777-300ER. They don't stick "up", as much as they stick "out".

Also, I thought the C-40 was based on the 737-700 airframe, while it looks like the Poseidon might be derived from the -800 or maybe even the -900.

I just hope there will be a 1/72 version of it. A C-40 would be nice also.

-800/-900 body is correct.... it's bits and pieces of a lot of variants including BBJ.

Winglets...they took them away when they were doing wing stores testing. Seems a PIO developed and the wings didn't like to stay connected to the airframe.... hence the change to the angled or swept wingtip... kinda like modern helo blades are starting to look like.

My recommendation to paint the first MMA up as Shamu the whale (aka SW Airlines) to honor the maritime aircraft-open ocean connection was very short lived. An effective camo for low level MMA ops... maybe.

I mentioned this in one of the earlier threads about the P-8. Just for info, the vertical devices on the Boeing wingtip are called winglets. The wingtips that are swept, ala the 767-400, are called "rakelets". Not a big deal, but maybe that will help in differentiating between the two.

I'll believe this P-8 program when I actually see aircraft in fleet squadrons. The patrol community taunted us all the time with talk of a new airframe.. Anyone remember the LRAACA?
