display cases or shelves or hanging from the ceiling?

Recommended Posts

I put mine in display cases from IKEA, except my big 1/48 bombers, they are on a shelf since they dont fit in the display. My favorite is the DETOLF, which is all glass sides and shelves and a nice spot up top for a halogen light. the shelves are a bit far apart in height, but you can either weld on some more supports for more shelves, or, as one of the guys in my local club does, get some clear plastic stands, with the front and back open and the supports on the sides. that way each shelf become two, models under the stand and on it. There are a few other cases at IKEA, but I still like my DETOLF best. I can fit 3 WWII single engine fighters per shelf.

HHHHMMMMM .....Detolf.....dust free....approx 50usd here,I am using an open ikea shelf library 5 shelves in one screwed against the wall which i paid 35 usd approx years back and now i am adding single shelves from them, they do collect dust.I used to have a Detolf stile 12 years back before ikea came here and i must have paid 7 times that price.

I scrounged a 6' high X 5' wide x 2' deep all glass case that was being disposed of by a store...and it was free. I have 5 shelves plus the base and it holds everything from WW1 Nieuport to a Lancaster...in 1:48 scale.

I also make individual cases from 3mm plexiglas. These I have cut at the local industrial plastic shop then I polish the edges with sandpaper and my trusty Dremel tool then glue them up with Methylene Chloride...used with lots of ventilation of course.

they list for $60US here, but Ikea has a sale once or twice a year and you can get em for $45-50 usually. I picked mine up for $50 and am waiting for the next sale to get a couple more. i got the last one in stock last time or i would have gotten more then! plus, Ikea sells a halogen light that you can see at the top of the case in the pic above. it is $10 and you get two lights, for two cases. no too shabby!

I would like to get a store style display case though, and I keep my eyes out for one, but so far no luck.

Those are exactly what I've got! Three side by side. Look great, especially with the halogens. Minimizes dust too. I've got others on shelves and an old bookcase as well.

Well worth the @$60.

Thanks for the ideas, guys! I have been watching Ebay for 6 months, trying to find a suitable display case. My 29 completed models are just on regular shelves, and are getting really dusty. That IKEA case looks like a good low cost solution!

I'm also a fan of the Detolf case from Ikea. I use sheets of clear acrylic (from Home Depot) held up on threaded rods to expand the display space. It's very ad hoc, but it works for me. So far I have 45-50 kits (a number of them in-progress) in three cases. I'll need one more if I dig any deeper in the stash. I'll probably also need to switch to 1/72.

What is Ikea? Is it a Office supply store. I'm down here in Nowhereville, La But travel all the time, just never noticed this store. I do have a Hobby Lobby within 2 hours drive though.

 No doubt about it, IKEA has some beautiful, reasonably priced display cases. What irks me is no presence in a city the size of St. Louis (metro area 2.5 million). The shipping for the bookcase and a light kit was close to $250! Waaaaaaaaaaay beyond my budget for something I have to assemble myself. <_< Ivan

Again, I recommend a visit to this site:

They have a line of acrylic cases that will hold more 1/48 planes than the Ikea ones for less money (when considering how many more you can fit in for the price). Many different styles and sizes to choose from!

Detolf from IKEA here too. Although not entirely dust free it is way better than open shelves and (if there is an IKEA nearby) very good value.

I like some the idea about expanding the number of shelves with clear acrylic sheet.

Hi,

I'm surprised that more people haven't done what I did. Looked around at the commercially available cases and found that they didn't really fit what I wanted, and also were way too expensive... so I decided to make my own.

Shopping around a little I managed to get all of the components needed for just over £50, that includes the glass shelving, lighting, wood, framing, stain, everything! Just used some basic 12mm MDF to make the cases and used a stain, when done it looks wood grain so doesn't look too basic. Made the doors from mouldings for picture frames and glazed with a good perspex used for pictures with UVF protection...

Just some basic skills needed to put the idea together and you're away. Took a weekend to put together and looks pretty good sitting in the porch of the house. Everyone who comes in can see it and comments!

The top cabinet can also be separated and stand as a separate cabinet if needed...

A few pics to show what you can achieve...

Pleased me with how it came out and does a good job, and not bad for the first time trying to build something like this. What do you think?

Karl.

Ikea is a relatively low priced furniture and home store from sweeden(?) that gets most of its cost savings by having the buyer do the assembly. they arent hard to put together, though being from sweeden their methods are different than most furniture that you have to assemble yourself here in the US, but still not difficult. you can find them online as well, but i would immagine that shipping costs on something rather heavy like a DETLOF (glass sides and shelves) would negate any savings on the price of the unit.

Ive seen you mention them before, yet every time I look at their acryllic cases I have not seen any that are more than 7" or 8" deep. Am I missing something or is that just as big as they come?
