Milo Posted January 22, 2007 Share Posted January 22, 2007 I've got Academy's wonderful P-38J kit (two actually) but I really want to build an early version, most likely an H. Before I even attempt a conversion, does anyone know if there are plans by Academy to release one? Or how about a conversion kit? Murphy's Law clearly states that as soon as I start building it, Academy will announce that they plan to release one. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Chuck1945 Posted January 22, 2007 Share Posted January 22, 2007 The sprue arrangements and parts breakdown on the Academy 1/72 P-38J certainly suggest earlier versions could be done, but I have not seen or heard anything to suggest it actually will happen. Might I suggest you go ahead and make your conversion, that will ensure that Academy WILL release the F/G/H kit for the rest of us. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

But given the molasses pace at which they release anything (nearly 20 years on the SB2C)... I wouldn't be holding my breath for an early Lightning anytime soon. The prominent side windows are not included in the kit (although they are shown in the box art) as that would have required a retool of the upper center pod part. Chuck1945 Posted February 9, 2007 Share Posted February 9, 2007 Unfortunately Hasegawa's effort to provide parts for both early and late P-38s missed getting both right (they are closer with a J/L then with a G/H). Consequently using the Hasegawa parts just gets you started with a G/H. The sad part is the Academy J is molded in a way that makes doing a G/H easy if Academy would choose to do so. Not really!... as Hasegawa failed to rectify the smaller radiator intakes found on the earlier variants... and the ones for their later variants are somewhat suspect as well. I think the only companies that have come close on the earlier intakes are the old Airfix and Revell kits... and it would be way too much work to use their parts in a kit-bash with the Academy.
